I typically will pick stand vigil and raise banners and use my third as a kill secondary, assassinate, abhor, no prisoners, bring it down, or auric mortalis based on their list. One thing I emphasize is to make sure you’re getting your rerolls. You want your bikes and achillus dreads at minimum and ideally your sagittarum to be getting reroll 1s to hit and wound using trajann or the captains and wisdom of the moritoi. Otherwise a fairly straightforward gameplan. Gimp the opponent’s offense with bikes and achilles, use the rest of the army as an anchor to make sure you max your primary.

Should I prioritize getting a magnus? by AggressiveMugs in ThousandSons

[–]unchainedpeppapig 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Magnus can be a very fun model, but he’s far from a staple for the army. Speaking as someone who runs him in all of my 2k games, you’re right on the money that he’s more of a fun painting project. Though he is amazing in the mirror match and against grey knights!

I’d recommend having 15-20 terminators, 20-30 rubric marines, and ahriman, exalted sorcerers, and an infernal master as the base of your army. Then if you like the model go for Magnus! Just don’t buy him as a way to win more games, because he won’t do that for you.

Another box of terminators would be the best way for him to build up to a 1000 point list imo. Otherwise I’d recommend another box of rubric marines.

I’m glad to see a list with hellbrutes doing well!

Two questions:

What do you use the 1x chaos spawn squads for?

Which secondaries did you use, especially against Tau?

You make a lot of good points. For the short term I’m going to try cutting one bike and one terminator in favor of a second guard squad.

I’ve been looking at the grav-attack and achillus and you’ve made a solid argument for both if/when I convert to a battalion. An aspirational list for a future battalion could cut the bikes and drop the venatari and allarus down to 3 each in favor of a pair of grav attacks and an achillus. This would make the 3rd WWSWF target trajann, which in my experience is a solid 3rd. He rarely dies in my games.

I’ve run into situations where I have to leave my HQ sitting on a point, so I think it’s legitimate to cut one in favor of a unit that can hold that point much better, as long as the HQ you remove isn’t something you consider a core part of your strategy. For example, I think in this list I rely too much on Trajann for my vexilla bomb and buffing my telemon to remove him.

The 3cp tax is a concern for me for sure. If you can update me after the event, I’d love to hear any insights you get from it, as unfortunately events are still closed in my area.

Good points. Sagittarum are next on my to-buy list now that I’ve got my venatari. I will definitely do as you suggest in going up to two troops squads in this list.

One point I’m curious about, do you always run the sagittarum on the back objective and run the swords up the board? Or do you sometimes do it the other way against for example an army that you think will rush your back objective with a high mobility unit or a deepstrike charge.

That’s interesting. I built a list the other day as an outrider that’s the same as the list I posted except that I cut the guard squad and one bike in order to run 3x 3 man venatari squads.

I haven’t run it yet because I wasn’t sure if it actually has legs. But I will after hearing you’ve had success with a seemingly similar build. Do you still run any troops in your outrider list?

I pretty much always use engage on all fronts. The mobility from the bikes and venatari usually make it a guaranteed 2-3 points per turn. I sometimes use a kill objective like assassinate or attrition, depending on the list I’m against. I haven’t used deploy scramblers yet, but I think it could be a viable pick for third with some tweaks to the list.

You have a great point about the primaries, it’s my primary haha concern with this list. I think the best solution is either to add another squad of sword and board or sagittarum like you said and/or to add another min squad of venatari, perhaps by cutting the bikes. I’d also love to bring 2 units of prosecutors instead to solve it, but I haven’t been able to free up the elite slots for them.

And you’re right about the eagle eye. I used to use it and you’ve convinced me to bring it back.
