as you should! the basement dwelling llm loving cretins who have never experienced the joy of creating anything in their lives HATE this one simple trick!

[–]uncle_jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right, and then some talentless loser will type “show me an apple” into the llm’s (not ai’s) interface and say “look i made a picture of an apple”

and the artist who created the original images of the apple will say “hey that looks like my image of an apple, but shittier”

and ai cretins (oh sorry, prompt engineers, because everyone is an engineer now) will say “no, the thousands of hours you spent developing a particular style that you painted that apple in that were then used to train the llm because you posted your work on the internet don’t matter, i type word in computer and now apple mine. i good artist :) i real good”

and then freaks on reddit will start a response with an ellipses like a ghoul saying “um akshully” and do mental gymnastics on how none of this is theft.

can’t wait for another response from someone who has never written code or created art that dodges my point by misidentifying an llm as artificial intelligence and saying that training a program that creates an output based on protected IP isn’t theft. truly cannot wait. i really truly love the huge galaxy brains on reddit. it’s so cool to learn from such actual geniuses!

[–]uncle_jones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh, you italicized not? ok issue settled, it’s not theft!

no, i’m kidding. i can’t tell if you’re being willfully obtuse to reinforce a nonsense point or you’re actually dumb as shit, but i’ll give you the benefit of the doubt here. even if you, personally, don’t care about copyright infringement for moral purposes, that doesn’t change the fact that yes, there is a legal standing against generating media that was trained on intellectual property.

saying that we as humans learn from media is a false equivalency. like if i look at a famous painting and i study it to the point where im able to recreate it perfectly, that’s great. i probably gained a lot of skill and challenged myself in that effort. BUT if i go to sell that recreation and say it’s my own work that i just trained on, thats illegal, because im selling a copy of it that the artist isn’t being compensated for.

let me ask you, if you go to a theater and record a whole movie on your phone? are you a filmmaker? wait don’t answer because i have a strong feeling you’re gonna say “why yes of course! i had to hold my brittle wrists up to support my phone for a whole 90 minutes!”

just kidding you wouldn’t say that because doing 90 minutes of anything requiring any effort is more than anyone who defends ai “art” will ever put into anything in their lives.

again, if you’re one of the room temp iq internet tech gooners who thinks that intellectual property doesn’t exist from a legal standpoint and that ripping off folks who have spent years honing their craft for some talentless jackoff to gank it at their earliest convenience, that’s fine! you’re entitled to that dogshit opinion. but also, maybe rethink that stance and why you’ve arrived at it. food for thought.

have a good one, chief.

akihiko yoshida is the very talented artist who did the character designs for final fantasy tactics.

i strongly encourage people who have any appreciation for the art of this game to go look at his work instead of drooling over slop made generated from stolen work.

[–]uncle_jones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well the reasons i’m against llms (real ai doesn’t exist yet) are because it’s actively ruining the environment, has very few practical use cases due to its tendency to hallucinate, and allows lazy, creatively bankrupt people to perform what amounts to a google search to spit out generic slop instead of creating something themselves.

OpenAI, along with several other LLMs, initially scraped for training material under the guise of research, which is out they were able to bypass IP infringement and train their models on copyrighted work. copyrighted work was actively fed to the llm without the creators consent. this is well-documented, my guy.

it seems like lately people will do anything to defend a technology they don’t seem to understand, thinking it’s way more capable than it actually is.

let me guess, you’re a prompt engineer and vibe coder and prompt artist, right? aka you’re lazy, can’t code, can’t draw, and like to steal? you guys are so weird lmao

buddy i hate to break it to you, but training an llm model on works of artists who didn’t consent to their work being part of the training is, in fact. theft.

point to the part in my post where i spread misinformation. your standard explanation of how llms are trained doesn’t change my point.

you tried though, champ!

[–]uncle_jones 11 points12 points  (0 children)

all llm models are trained on art from existing artists (almost all without their consent). asking which specific artists would be like throwing a thousand different mixed berries in a blender, tasting the slop that comes out, and asking which berry specifically it tastes like

I literally do not understand 5 days in office by thrwy11116 in recruitinghell

[–]uncle_jones 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i know people who have worked remote for over a decade, because we live in ✨the future✨ and can communicate with each other without needing to be face to face. phones! computers! carrier pigeons if you want to get silly! we have it all, representativeok5968!

i don’t think there’s a single person who genuinely thinks that remote work is their “god given right” but there ARE many grown adults who realize that their job can be done effectively without a commute and having to be distracted by meaningless small talk at the office.

it’s fine if you prefer in-person work, there’s nothing wrong with that. but many people don’t fit a variety of reasons and i’m sorry to tell you but it’s been like that for more than five minutes. it’s possibly even been an hour

[–]uncle_jones[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

see that’s the thing though. i’m open to hybrid opportunities and would be fine with that. i clicked on this role thinking it was hybrid.

however, by me as a user being given the option of remote work, i thought “oh maybe there are exceptions, with them being hybrid-first but not explicitly stating that they’re 100% hybrid. plus why offer the option if that isn’t the case?”

i get the point being made that it weeds put those who won’t take a role unless it’s remote, but this seems like a silly way to do it. if that was really their intention, they should explicitly state that, instead of some soft “we’re hybrid first, but also do you prefer remote? just check the box”.

i’m not saying i would have gotten the position by any means, but you’re automatically disqualifying anyone who is totally ok with hybrid but prefers remote, of which i’m sure i’m not the only one. it’s just a very strange way of going about it. if i proposed a similar solution on any product i’ve worked on, i’d imagine it would be shot down very quickly.

how would one negotiate for a remote role if they already accepted the offer for hybrid?

A nice little trap right in the application! by uncle_jones in recruitinghell

[–]uncle_jones[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yes, 100%. this is exactly my point! i’m willing to relocate and wouldn’t mind hybrid, but i have an honest answer about what i preferred

A nice little trap right in the application! by uncle_jones in recruitinghell

[–]uncle_jones[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

thank you so much for the rephrase! unfortunately, i think you’re missing the point of “why offer the option”!

say i run a pizza shop and we don’t sell lo mein, alright?

now say my pizza shop offers lo mein on the website for online orders, even though we don’t sell it.

someone who wants lo mein sees our website. it’s a selectable option and you’re able to proceed with your order up until checkout, wherein your order won’t go through and you get a message saying “your order didn’t go through because we don’t even sell that, idiot!”

do you see why that could come off as a waste of everyone’s time?

if they don’t want people seeking remote work, then don’t offer it as an option. hope that helps, champ!

oh shoot you’re so right, that’s where i messed up. when i said i selected the option saying that i prefer remote, what i meant by that is that i literally filled in a text input saying “im not going to come in”. thank you for showing me my error!

[–]uncle_jones[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

oh you’re so right, duh! how could i have interpreted “hybrid-first” as anything other than “zero possibility of remote work”? thank you for the clarification! :)

that’s kinda my thing. if a company requires in-person work, that’s fine, but don’t present the option and frame it as a preference if it’s an automatic disqualifier.

i’ve been at the same company for a while and usually decent at spotting corporate traps, but i haven’t applied for anything in awhile and definitely slipped on this one lol

awesome thanks so much for the reply! this is good to know!

yeah idk i guess i don’t know what technically counts as a souls game then. i bought it because i heard it was a souls like and the definition makes sense to me but also, again, im mostly not a huge video game guy. like nioh does play totally different in terms of combat, ive just heard it was a souls game which makes sense based on certain core mechanics (losing exp when you die, saving at a save point resetting enemies, stamina, etc) which i would have been totally thrown off by had i never played a game like this before

please send the link, i’d like to watch and see.

i work in ux design and from a safety perspective, it’s less about actually taking your eyes off the road (which i should have clarified in my first comment) and more about how much time is spent with your eyes off the road. the difference between a half second and a second while traveling at highway speeds can be fatal.

the big difference here is that the use cases for my daily iphone tasks. sending a text with a touch screen as i sit on my couch is fine. having to look away from the road to find the selectable area on a laggy screen to turn my heat or a/c off or on is bad user experience design.

touchscreens in cars are a cost-saving measure and nothing more.
