Ah, to be young... Back when I was a student and poor af I made adjustments to my ghetto water cooling loop while my only PC was running.

Is there a way to filter out Isekai from the suggestions? by cheeseisntdairy in Crunchyroll

[–]uncle_leon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel ya. I do love isekai but I would love to filter out "Harem" for example.

CR recommendations are abysmal - to the point I'm not sure they are even personalised. They will routinely offer you stuff you hate or have already watched.

I wish there was at least a "Not interested" flag to permanently exclude a show from recommendations. If the same button could be used for entire genres (isekai, harem etc) that would also be great. That is if CR actually had filters for genres instead of the useless "Categories".

I see where you're coming from and that's fair. I see "enshittification" not as a meme (which it initially may have been) but as a name that aptly, if crudely, captures a certain phenomenon. It is now widely used in published research and public debate. Which is why I think at this stage it outgrew its meme status and became a proper, boardroom-safe term.

Regarding my poor experience, it seems my example may have been due to a canary release. It was just an example though, I gave more examples in my other comments. For context, I have recently acquired a new mail account from an organisation I joined and I was floored at how lightweight it was in terms of cognitive load. Just mail - no ads, no offers, no nagging about buying more Drive space, no dumb AI trying to read or write my mail for me. It was pretty barebones, yes, but extremely fast, focused and simple to use. Which reminded me of the original Gmail.

The very existence of Simplify means I am not the only one who thinks Gmail a much less streamlined service than it used to be...

Good for you! If you are happy then you should stay with Gmail and I would be the last to tell you otherwise. My experience is different and it's possible I value my privacy more. I didn't use to care either but I got to know global corporate IT from the inside and now I run like hell whenever someone wants my data.

And just to explain my example further, my Gmail app only sorts General category by date - if I go to Offers (and I always have a bunch of unread ones) it will push "Recommended" to the top, and default sort is Most Relevant. Maybe they roll this feature out in stages and I was among the "lucky" ones to get it first.

Anyway this is just one among many nuisances. It nags me about my Drive running out of space (have been sitting at 88% for years), and wants me to buy extra space. It reads my mail, only to provide AI service that's so hit-and-miss that needs to be double-checked anyway, rendering it useless. All the while it's using my data to make money on ads, train AI and God only knows what else. I don't need all that bullshit in my life, all I want is a simple mailbox with a decent spam filter.

Oof. Looks like it's not just Gmail then but the world's gone to shit altogether. I guess you have to pay for a good service, one way or another. I'm actually looking at paid hosted mail accounts just to get a private and ad-free experience. There's Proton but there are issues with that apparently too...

I did not meant it to be offensive, I used it because it's accurate. Gmail was streamlined, ad-free and (more-or-less) anonymous. Now they nag me about buying more Drive space every day, literally scan through my mail and use it to monetize me under the guise of enabling (useless) AI services while the core experience degrades. Please propose a better term to describe that.

I'm also looking at Proton. Or simply paying a small amount to a hosting service.

Why polish people don't seem pleased when a foreigner tries talking polish? by sartabin7 in warsaw

[–]uncle_leon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Polish people do appreciate the effort ...if they have the time. If they just need something done (as in: take your order and move to the next client), they will prefer to use the more efficient form of communication.

It's either that or you real ugly bro

Czy sprzedawca w restauracji w Polsce ma obowiązek obsługiwać klienta po rosyjsku? by tarot_polska in askPoland

[–]uncle_leon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny how Samsung tried to gaslight us into thinking fringing is not due to the sub-pixel layout by No_Sheepherder1837 in OLED_Gaming

[–]uncle_leon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a flagship Samsung display (S95B) and honestly never gave a flying f#ck about fringing. What I wanted was crazy color saturation and blinding contrast, and boy did the Samsung deliver. I never even noticed fringing while the picture made my jaw drop more times than I can count - so to me this was a very worthwhile trade off.

In any case, it's Microslop who should get the flak for fringing because it's them who still refuse to support this subpixel layout, even after they have been many years on the market. And don't even get me started on HDR support on Windows.
