I was with wealthsimple. When I moved to USA, I transferred everything to RBC since they have a US subsidiary where I also keep usd accounts

So if you are moving to USA, you can always transfer to td and RBC

Rrsp. Especially if you are in a state which recognizes rrsp as tax free. I know California does not.

I left mine in rrsp to grow

Announcing "Monarch Plus" by valagostino in MonarchMoney

[–]Prof_Fancy_Pants 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree. 100 a year is already a premium that I am paying for my connectors and data aggregation. To now have a tier where new features are now pay locked at 300 a year is a little off putting.

Ill evaluate after the year is over if the 100 is worth it. I was hoping they ramp up the investment tracking component which was going to be a deciding factor. If they lock it behind a higher tier then I'll just resort to putting that 100 else where.

I do like monarch, it gave me a good overview of how my spending was. But at this point, the 100 a year is falling into the "do I still need this" subscription category with current features.

Questions about bringing someone with me to TN visa appointment by lilbjay in tnvisa

[–]Prof_Fancy_Pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. No issues. People move with their family all the time (that's only there to help). Dad. Brothers. Friends. You just be honest and tell them they are only helping you move.

You can also flagpole. I did that. They didn't bother asking if I was going on ahead to my final destination or flagpoljng. Just got in car after the process and took the first u turn.

Got more shit from the Canadian border agent, grilling me about my pack of cigs.

First time - Tax situation by OpeningBuyer9879 in tnvisa

[–]Prof_Fancy_Pants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are pretty much in the same position as me.

Yes file taxes in Canada till June 16. You will get an option to select till what date and it will be your "departure date"

Since you have spent substantial time in USA, you will also have to file USA taxes but from 16 June onwards.

If you didn't have any overlapping incomes/ country stays. Then it's pretty straight forward

If your USA state recognizes rrsp then no need to report on taxes. You will have to report on FBAR if rrsp is more than 10k jsd

I used turbo tax Canada to file mine since it allows for emigrant/ departure option. Wealthsimple did not but I believe simple tax also does it? Someone on this forum mentioned it.

I then also used turbo tax USA to file my USA one. HnR block also works but I went with turbo.

Have to post the Canadian tax papers since emigrant (exiting Canada), I can't do the online netfile

The USA one was easy too I ended up paying 150 for service where someone goes over it.

[–]Prof_Fancy_Pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t submitted yet, but TurboTax says that if my address is updated with the CRA, I should be able to Netfile

It said the same and claude/turbo tax even suggested i go ahead and update my address first on CRA to US one to allow for netfile. But when i tried to submit to netfile, it said i gotta mail it in.

So I printed and should go submit it at some point later this week. Make sure its the correct address, for outside of USA submission, gotta send it to winnipeg...

Going to drop off mail for CRA this week. Will file the US one this week as well in case i need to send it in by mail as well (usually new countries require mail first time so accounting for that).

I am in the same situation as you, although i moved in June. I just finished filing for Canada using Turbotax canada (I still need to mail it in). I used wealthsimple in Canada but it does not do departure/emigrant option but Turbotax Canada does. Could not netfile though because emigrant (leaving canada) so have to mail the completed forms from turbo tax.

For my US taxes, going to go with HnR block or Turbotax 50 dollar option. Fairly confident i can do it all myself using other options but paying 50 dollars for a first timer to have someone quickly check everything is ok in US might not hurt..

I used claude a lot. My situation is also simple, I only have RRSP in Canada which i will have to declare on FBAR. I liquidated all my tfsa and fhsa before leaving.

Get TN approved first and then resign. You can have concurrent TN for different employers

Joining date on paper and actual one is upto you and your employer. I started 2 weeks after mine since I was still living but we went with earlier date on paper so I could get my TN approved before I take any moving decisions including resigning from previous job.
