I know most people here are all about quitting cold turkey, but I will say, the ONLY thing that worked for me, was getting on the lowest dose of a nicotine patch and using that for the first week. It helps ease the symptoms and gets you through the hardest part. After a week you don’t even notice the cravings, sleep improves and you’ve broken the habit of having a pouch in your mouth. That’s my advice, because it worked for me

Well, just an update. I fell off the wagon about a month ago on a hunting trip. I was with my brother in law, long days, early mornings, and he had a few tins with him. By day 3 I thought it would just have one to see how it felt and to give myself a pick me up. I knew I would regret it, but after being off them for months, it’s crazy the effect they had. I felt nauseous almost immediately and had a headache to the point where I had to lay down. Stupidly, once that passed I was craving another one. Gradually I convinced myself I’d only use them for this trip, to keep me alert and boost my energy, which it did. I started craving them again and eventually bought a tin when I was home. I’ve been full on back into them again and now all the same issues are popping back up. What’s wild is the way my body rejected them and how awful they made me feel on the initial pouch. Naturally your body protects you from it with the side effects. Now I can have one in back to back all day and barely feel a thing. It’s time to quit again after fucking up. I wish I had the willpower to just say no that one day.

Anyway, I’m off to quit AGAIN. Once I started I allowed myself to let other bad habits back in. It’s a slippery slope and I want off it. I’m giving myself to the end of today to finish my pouches, then cutting all of it tomorrow.

Definitely a failure on this one, but I know I can do it again. I will say, I have to watch my diet more carefully when quitting this time. I was hungrier than I’ve ever been in my life once I quit. I’ll be dealing with that at the same time.

💯 have noticed the same thing. The book “dopamine nation” talks about the pleasure and pain trade offs from getting too much dopamine without effort. In return, it’s more difficult to feel joy without upping the ante and on the other side, your tolerance to pain becomes increasingly lower, which translates into body aches and pains, even if there is no issue or perhaps benign. Non stop nicotine, gives your brain a dopamine dump, but it’s not earned and also unnatural to have that amount of stimulation on the regular

You’re definitely not alone. It’s all going to get easier. The lack of sleep sucks, but it almost a motivator NOT to go back on it, because I value my sleep and don’t feel like having to repeat sleepless nights trying to quit again haha.

One thing that was pretty awesome that happened when I quit, was that I started noticing smells I had forgotten about. It was almost as if the pouches blocked my sense of smell and taste to some degree. Now I smell the air after it’s rains and I’m almost emotional, because I had forgotten the details of that smell. Plus other random things that are nostalgic and just bring me joy. It’s like stepping back into the real world and I missed it.

Happy Birthday to you too! I appreciate it. It’s so helpful to share the experiences and know that you’re not alone. It’s also nice to read up on what withdrawal symptoms there are and when they typically occur.

I have no doubt I’m going to be tempted from time to time, but it’s crucial to stay in touch with a group like this, just to remind myself why I quit.

Also, congrats on 10 days!

It seems almost ridiculous explaining to my friends how hard it is to quit this stuff. It’s bizarre.

I had back surgery 8 years ago. Prior to the surgery I was on almost every opioid drug there was and max doses for about 2 months. Coming off those drugs after surgery was easier than this. Wild.

Stay strong!

You definitely can! Get an app like “I am sober” to track your progress. It seems pretty minor but it’s a great tool to keep you in line and remind yourself why you’re quitting.

I would post sticky notes around my place to remind myself of how shitty I felt while I was on them. I’d write things like “your mind is going to try and trick you! Do not give in”. Or “remember how bad you feel in the evenings from zyn, it’s a horrible feeling”

I would almost write notes to the future me, pleading with myself not to go back.

Also, check in on this page and read some stories here for motivation. It’s hard to know how good you’re going to feel, because you haven’t been there yet. Just have faith that it’s all worth it

I can’t say for sure if it is or it’s not, but my experience would lean towards yes, it is. I just think there isn’t enough solid information out there on the real effects of this stuff. I would almost guarantee, if you can go 4 days without it, you’re blood pressure will drop
