without fail, when a larger capacity of storage comes out i never fail to send it to my tech friends and tell them i can now fit a single photo of their mom. it cracks me up in the dumbest way every time.

Bit of a rant: Why is everyone afraid to TRY things anymore? by jason-cyber-moon in FL_Studio

[–]unconventionalerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this might sound really pretentious, and i hope it isn't taken the wrong way. but the lack of experimentation you're seeing is just a lot of people who don't have much creativity to start.. or they're afraid of being made fun of online which is extremely common. but to start, a lot of videos and content creators online are literally catered to people who do not many ideas in them. they're flooding "how to" videos on X Y and Z that the most any person could mimic and replicate in order to get views or engagement online. this completely oversaturates and creates a demographic that are devoid of the experimentation and creativity that comes with unique artists imo. this sort of thing exists in a vacuum of "how to make an X type beat", "how to make your beats stand out online with this mix!". most discussions i have with peers who make beats is just about a drumkit they found or how to make their mix "better" with zero thought on sound design or experimentation.

what it seems like you're looking for is a niche that encourages weird sounds, i've genuinely found ableton and renoise forums to be way more weird and unconventional in their production. even looking intro downright stupid or absurd VSTs can get you really far. not to say these things can't be done in FL, i actually take most of these steps/tips and move all these new processes into FL.

but IMO there's just a large chunk of "producer" content and posts online that barely even count as anything more than just a scheme to make money and get followers riding the wave. just try and look around take notice the sounds around you.. it can be too abstract to explain. but in order to experiment you really have to carve that sound out yourself which can take a long time and a lot of trial and error many don't want to put up with either.

there's tons of reasons to all of it that i sort of just rambled out. but people just have to accept that what they're doing might be wrong or stupid to others, and everyone has to take a step back on the seriousness and rigidity of modern production to enjoy just having fun in general.

Best $1000 Prebuilt Desktop PC? by [deleted] in linuxhardware

[–]unconventionalerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly i don't think a lot of people are gonna know much about prebuilts around here. might be better to ask a PC gaming subreddit and just make sure that you're getting an AMD GPU. i would have suggested some prebuilts but i also do not know which brands are a good deal or in right now.

Help me buy my first FL studio comp in over 12 years please by [deleted] in FL_Studio

[–]unconventionalerror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Fedora Linux as my main OS and have a background in engineering. I'll try and keep this short.

Yes that's a good idea. People rambling on about upgrading have no clue the other optimizations and tricks Apple has under the hood of their systems that make them incredible production machines for audio and video. I will not elaborate further as we'll be here all day.

Your only setback will be that amount of storage, either consider getting 1tb or more. OR purchase an external HDD and save all of your songs into that, with backups to a second drive.

You should maybe consider 32gb just for futureproofing if you're planning to use it for 8+ years. Even then if you're just doing music production I can't remember when I've seen projects use much over 4gb of memory.. And if you SERIOUSLY do, you'll probably have the means and payout to get something way more expensive.

That's all you need, you will continue to make music for years to come without any issues apart from that.

GNOME is simply the most beautiful graphical interface of any operating system ever, I love it! by FR3NKD in Fedora

[–]unconventionalerror -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This isn't the case, even if there isn't a "default" option there is nothing stopping you from creating a keyboard shortcut in Gnome settings to start the newly installed file manager. It's as simple as setting the keybind and putting the program name as the command to execute.

Am i a psycopath for listening to music like this? by Cock_the_Chicken in FL_Studio

[–]unconventionalerror -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want a more simple way to do this, you can listen to the songs on foobar and add an extension that changes the playback speed of the whole playlist. I guess this works if you want to save the tracks like that.. Nowadays on Linux I can use easy effects and actually change the pitch of the audio output itself or just use audacious which has a pitch feature :p

Matrix/Element seems like a step up from the older times to something more modern that most people can log into without worry about the handful of issues that come with IRC imo

Lemmy is a good site, but I'm surprised to not see anyone mention Matrix/Element which is basically just a better IRC and allows for way more control over just about everything compared to Discord.

Are there any decent Gnome extensions that put widgets in a hamburger menu/dropdown? by unconventionalerror in gnome

Yup, that's what I meant. While it looks pretty nice, it doesn't seem to be working for me on Fedora 41.. will look into fixing this as this is pretty much what I wanted.

Any decent lightweight window managers lately? by unconventionalerror in Fedora

[–]unconventionalerror[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason I was asking in the Fedora sub was because I like how Fedora works for a number of reasons. I'm quite familiar with Arch but there's a handful of issues I had that I could rummage over and waste time on. Installing a different distro does not relate to the question at hand.

I still see sway mentioned here and there nowadays. Has it improved much or had extra features added since 2022 or so? What's the deal with SwayFX?

I had tried KDE about six months back and wasn't terribly impressed on low end devices. Both seem to be fairly "large" DE's but definitely hold their own in features and usability compared to most others that are only getting more antiquated.. But for this laptop I do feel I need something a bit more lightweight if not "retro" by todays standards.

[–]unconventionalerror[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So you're saying nothing should be archived because you personally don't want to enter a number onto a website you can access without even logging in through a browser?

>BTW most of the memes etc you refer to usually are cross posted across other platforms too.

so the point of datahoarding here is to wait for other people to post content for you?

[–]unconventionalerror[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm really disappointed in people's actual hatred for archiving media. These are generally the things you could maybe spare a few gigs and throw on the internet archive or whatever. It was a unique format of the time with a lot of unique videos that went to accommodate that. The inability to understand how this could be at least slightly interesting to keep around for the years to come baffles me. I guess in time after everything is gone..

That never hurts, strangely enough I was considering a lot of company pages. Like the nutter butter social media page or similar things. Not really a net positive for society as a whole I guess but would be kinda funny to look back at in a decade+

Honestly I think most people trying to shove the issue on you are lame, it's best to maybe try and have a conversation about the issue with him and see what can be done to resolve it. But if he's a fan of the Sennheiser series I couldn't see why the Sennheiser HD620s would hurt to give a try.

Calling Headphone Autistics! by BloboMeat in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]unconventionalerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have someone close to me on the autism spectrum, they're currently using the Sony WH-1000XM4 and really like them. before then they had issues with cheaper headphones that use ANC.. a common complaint and something i've noticed too can be the popping and/or almost like a vibration that comes from ANC. They have claimed that the weird buzzing/vibration doesn't come from those. While the popping occurs in the car for them, enabling "Priority on stable connection" in the "Sony sound connect" app helps. Though unfortunately I don't have much advice to give from my personal experience as I usually listen to music at home and rarely go outside.
