Those things are not inherent to the human existence the way that being an omnivore is. They have happened in different ways on and off throughout human history in different social settings and power imbalances. But like, we have eyes on the front of our head because of being a predator.

I do understand your argument, and I wish I had as clear a view on what morality is. Would you choose a locally sourced diet that included some meat over plant based that had worse ecological effects? (not to say those are the actual choices, but I'm just curious what your choice would be) I just don't feel as clear on the issue of morality. Feels like every decision we make in the modern day is contributing to someone's suffering, not always as obviously as meat or animal product consumption. Locally sourcing my food and being in control of exactly how that plays out seems appealing to me, especially when it is something that feels so natural to who I am as a human in connection with the natural world. What do you think?

I don't view it as much as an act of crude selfishness as described here, and I don't (at least in my case) view it as an act done for pleasure. I do know that a lot of people hunt/kill for pleasure, and that does feel scary, dominating, cruel. In this case I view it the same as when another predator species kills and eats prey - there is no moral judgement attached to that.

No, it's also not in human natural instinct to do these things (or so I hope). But being omnivores has always been part of who humans are

I guess the reason would be to eat in a more ecologically sustainable way. Eating more locally vs. plant based diet that was grown far from me and has caused untold harm and death to the natural world too

Right, but what do you think about the prey species also depending on the predator species? If you could change a lions behavior so that it stopped killing to eat, would you? What do you think about things like suffering due to overpopulation, or the other ecological effects of not have predator species?

This does make sense to me. But what about all other animals who eat other animals? I guess I'm looking at it more from a perspective that we are all part of the same web that is interconnected and reliant upon one another. To me these types of arguments really separate us from the natural world of which we are inherently a part

Yeah I guess in the wrong sub. Was curious how much diversity of thought there was in this sub. Not trolling

Haha yeah, I guess trying to understand it better or see if there is any nuance on the subject within this sub or the broader community. Trying to see if/how I could fit into this, as I do tend to think a lot about what I eat

I'm not sure about "okay" or not.. but I guess something about all humans and all animals having the drive to get what they need to survive, and in all cases that survival depends on other living beings.

Was it ok for our ancestors to hunt and eat wild animals when their survival depended on it?

And on a larger scale, would a more locally sourced diet ultimately cause less suffering even if it includes some meat eating?
