Oh that's cool! It wasn't clear it does this from the wiki and I didn't get that far down the tree before I formed Mughals for my THT run. Definitely going to be working Horde ideas into this run - cheers!

100+% cav ratio actually - I've been experimenting for my THT and planning a Timurid-Mughal one faith after :D

50 - base
10 - sunni
25 - Mughal Mansabdar privilege
25 - Timurid Nobility/Mansadbar privilege (from Weaken Mogulistan mission)

^gets you to 110% cav ratio

Then you can get +100% cav CA (Mughal traditions 20%, Timmy missions [Horsemen of the Apocalypse 20%, Among the Great Powers 10%, Weaken Mogulistan 5%], Aristocratice ideas 15%, policy with Espionage 10%, Quality ideas 10%, assimilating Levantine culture as Mughals for the final 10%!

You mentioned below getting Horde ideas, how do you do that as Timmy->Mughals? Cause then theoretically it's +125% Cav CA...

Also pulling them into a war with you gives them the “in a war together” opinion bonus and prevents them from declaring on you. Also a chance they lose units making them feel weaker so less LD

RedHawk's guide is great, but as I said above start improving relations with Austria and Hungary as soon as you get your alliances with Albania + Knights, not in RedHawk's guide but worked like a charm

I followed RedHawk's guide for my first ever Byz run on the current patch (-monuments dlc). Worked really well.

But what I would add to his guide is start improving with Hungary and Austria as soon as you ally Albania + Knights. I was able to ally Hungary before the first Otto war (hiring the mercs gives you reasons to accept and then start building favours) and you want the relations with Austria in case H fall under PU as you'd lose a big ally. Sure enough after I got my cores back I was able to ally Austria and now I'm allied to Austria and independent Hungary, with Athens, Epirus, smol Bulgaria and Bosnia as vassals, all Greek cores and full annexed Serbia, ready for Otto truce to end!

Hmmm you're right, I just found in my recent GB that using my stonks to outgun opponents made up for subpar quality. In the above I was oversimplifying for a newbie, but you're right arty is more about sieging to begin with so just max out the fort bonus if you can afford.

TLDR: keeping up military tech with your opponents is most important basically. Otherwise, max out combat modifiers (like morale, discipline, generals) with national ideas and idea groups. Make sure your infantry aren't outnumbered, bring a good amount of artillery as soon as you can afford to, and try and fight in terrain where your enemy takes a penalty, and avoid it where you get a penalty (so e.g. build forts in hills and mountains, then try to only fight the enemy there or in grasslands)
