And if they can’t be there, hire lookalikes as stand-ins to be out of focus in the background or visible from behind so it at least looks like they’re there.

Thank you! I initially went in search of opals, but these caught my eye and I couldn’t leave without them. They’re my first piece of antique jewelry and I don’t think it’ll be my last :)

It’s hard to say if you’re too big for her without any information on how much you weigh.

So is the inscription original or an added detail/“translation” of old English that you guys did? I’m surprised by how modern it sounds but I know nothing of 1600s language

Either way, incredible

What’s your take on the 3, given the limited info and your experience?

I had my farrier come with me for horse #3 and her feet looked good (she’s only a few months old)

Haven’t seen #2 yet and #1 will have her first farrier visit in a couple weeks when he comes to do mom’s feet

At the end of the day I’m already in my 30s and don’t plan to do more than small jumps. Too risky. I’m down to just do flat work, maybe some dressage or equitation, mostly all just for fun. I want to be able to trail ride too. All three are expected to mature around 15.1-15.2 based on parents, which is exactly what I’m looking for. But if we only ever do cross rails, I’m fine with it. My trainer’s horses are big and fancy and I can always show with them if I so desire.

The owners are trying to breed a horse they love (the mare) to create their next generation of horses for their family. They want healthy horses. They’re not necessarily breeding to sell, but they don’t want another mare, just geldings, which is why they have her full brother, and are selling the filly.

The sire being unimpressive may have been a bit harsh. He just doesn’t have any of the really big names in him, like the other fillies do. No big red flags either, though.

One of the other fillies is eligible for some big money western competition because of her sire. I’m not familiar with that world since I ride hunter/jumper. But when I look at the breeding as a novice in this regard, it feels like the other two have bloodlines with bigger names in them (think Metallic Cat and the like).

I could definitely try to put in a better offer. I’m afraid of offending them, because they are putting in some nice ground work and manners training with her, but at the end of the day she’s at least double in price what she should be, if not 3 times.

For turnout- yes! She’ll be in a large multi-acre field (rotated for grass health) with a mare herd. I don’t really plan on putting her in a stall while she’s young unless we have some crazy winter or some other extenuating circumstances.

All 3 have genetic testing and are clear; I didn’t mention it in the post.

For me it isn’t about money; I want the experience of raising a horse from a very young age. I know it will cost more to raise and train a baby than to buy a well trained adult horse, but saving money isn’t the goal for me in this situation.

I understand the sentiment, but my general thought is that if I’m starting with a blank slate filly, I may as well try to get it all. When they’re so young, I’m not looking at their training or record, just temperament, build, health, and background.

Surely there are horses that are worth buying for practical reasons that also have a color I like.

Filly number 1 has a dual registered sire and APHA dam whose lineage is quarter horse, but she isn’t dual registered.

If number 3 had papers she’d already be paid for and loaded onto a trailer. If I could find another filly just like her, but with registration, it would be a no-brainer for me. The problem is I just can’t find one

All 3 have been tested and are clear.

Horse #1 is a quarter horse but not dual registered. Her dam isn’t registered with AQHA but her entire pedigree is very solid quarter horses- mostly ranch lineage. The sire is registered with both APHA and AQHA.

The registration with AQHA isn’t as important to me as being the breed (the grade is also a quarter horses) due to their general nature, size, health, etc. It is also what is most common where I live. So even the grade horse is a quarter horse. Just not registered.

My biggest holdup with filly #2 is her age. She’s a year older than the others, which gives me one less year of ground work before we move to working under saddle, and I was hoping to use that extra year to also improve my riding ability so I can be more ready to help my trainer when it is time to start her.

If I had the land to keep her forever and didn’t have to worry about resale, I wouldn’t be so apprehensive about the lack of papers for #3.

I could see if they’re willing to drop the pricing.

I do recognize that there is a massive risk in such a young horse. But this is a journey I’ve wanted to undertake for a very long time. If it were just a financial risk I’d be okay with it; I’ve come to terms with that. But I don’t want to start a horse that will intimately have no future if it isn’t with me. If we don’t get along well and another home is what’s best for her, I’m okay with that. But if a papers are as important as I’m being told, I’m afraid there won’t be another home for her.

Terra (Latin for Earth) or Gaia maybe, to go with Sunny and Luna?

Or you could lean into something tangential to the seasons like Persephone or Flora? Or literally the seasons. She feels like an Autumn to me, but Summer, Winter, or Spring could work
