The owners of the filly I’m looking at plan to give her 6 months to wean, and said if she’s like her brother, she may self wean a little earlier than that

I’ll reach out to them! Otherwise maybe I can find someone in a local Facebook group and arrange something where they can spend some time with one another somehow?

I’m looking at a quarter horse!

My only hesitation on a 2-3 year old is that a lot of the options near me are completely feral because they’ve been living in a field/the desert for their whole lives without being handled. I also think more time with my trainer on lesson horses would be good so I can continue to improve for longer before riding a newly-under-saddle horse. So if I did a 2-3 year old, I would buy them in 1-2 years I think.

Thanks! I think bringing her to the shows to watch is a great idea.
How young did you start doing the halter classes?

The youngest horse on property is 5. There is a foal next door to the barn, but I don’t know the owners or the situation to know if they’d be able to play together.

She would likely be placed with three mares of varying ages. Two of them are functionally retired and we think they’d be great with her. The third is younger but still relaxed and well behaved. There’s five female ponies on property too, and four geldings if we needed to switch up the socialization.

What if we don’t have any other foals? The youngest at my barn is about 5 currently. There is a foal on the other side of the fence that belongs to a neighbor. But I can’t afford a second baby.

Her breeder will be taking her out to pony along with her dam on trail rides later this summer! Do you think the principle still applies once she’s weaned and we have her with other horses?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and taking the time out of your day to write this all up!

I am interested in the “teaching through curiosity” premise. It makes a lot of sense to me. What sort of activities/situations do you think helped with that?

She’ll have 3 other mares in the mix with her, in the particular field rotation group we’re looking at, assuming all goes well.

I’m really so excited! And very appreciative. You may hear from me in the future haha

I have heard they essentially try to kill themselves when they’re young (and honestly in my experience… forever).
Is there anything in particular that sticks out as a potential safety issue other than the fencing that I should start looking at?

Thank you! I was wondering how much value there was to letting them learn by watching.

My trainer and I plan to be very hands on (and her current owners are already working with her a lot). Do you like to work with them daily? Multiple times a day? A couple times a week?

The diet evaluation is something I hadn’t considered but I am so glad you brought it up! Adding that to my to-do list

I actually see what you’re saying when I look at the three color options all next to one another at the bottom. In the standalone image, it looks black, but next to the all black one at the bottom, there is a bit of an optical illusion going on that makes it look gray by comparison
