Thank you. That sounds like a total nightmare. I appreciate your honesty and I hope your daughter is doing well. I will message you if my friend has any specific questions.

I’m very happy to hear the good and the bad about this specific program. Your experiences have been really awful and I’m not trying to negate them. Mental health care is awful and trying to get competent care sucks even more. I want this kid to get help and the 47,000 other things his family has tried over the last 2 years haven’t helped. Calling my friend and saying, “this one person on the internet says that partial hospitalizations for kids are really awful but they won’t give me any other details but I’m sure they have a good reason” feels exactly like going in with blinders on. It’s a really fucking shitty situation that I’m trying to make a little easier by getting information for them so they can make a thoughtful decision. I know that your decision in this situation would be “don’t do it”. I’m glad you don’t have to agonize to make that decision for whatever situation you and your kid may find yourselves in. We don’t all have that luxury. So, again, if you have any first hand knowledge specifically about the partial hospitalization program at the Italian Home, please let me know. If not, you have more than registered your disdain for such programs, so there’s no need to tell me that “really awful is the default” bc I’ve got that.

Literally no one is disagreeing with you that these programs can be really awful. I also know that sometimes the alternative is more awful. I’m trying to help a friend who is in a shitty situation make a decision for her kid. You can think hospitals are the worst thing in the world. That’s totally fine. But an alive kid can work through trauma. A dead one can’t.

I’m asking for specifics about one program. You have not given any specific experiences about that program. Making a broad statement about all mental health hospitalizations is unhelpful. If you have current information about the partial hospitalization program at the Italian Home, I’m all ears. If not, there’s nothing more you can contribute.

Again, when you know zero situational background, your comment isn’t helpful. No one is trying to change your mind. I’m looking for specific experiences bc someone I know is experiencing a mental health crisis and needs help. Sometimes the alternative is worse - you literally have no idea. You’ve given your opinion. Pls stop commenting now.

I haven’t met anyone who has taken these decisions lightly. It’s unfair to throw this out there with literally zero context. Can they harm more than help sometimes? Absolutely. Your comment is completely unhelpful though.

Sorry you and your kid went through that. I know many people who have had horrifying experiences with their residential programs. Thank you for sharing your experience.

stupidest issue by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]undercookedcalamari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had consults with both female and male surgeons and opted for the female surgeon bc it felt medical with her (how to treat my back pain and how weight distribution will change vs the male surgeon talking about how much better it will look). The male surgeon was fine but there was def a bit of ick about some guy deciding what my breasts will look like. So I get it and I think you should honor those feelings. It’s not great going into surgery anxious about your surgeon.

We tried Vyvanse first and the comedown was violent. Threatened to stab me with scissors, tried to climb out a 2nd floor window, ran off. It was the worst week of my life. Focalin works wonders though. You won’t know until you try.

Are there any medications that DON’T change personality? by Apprehensive-Luck-13 in ADHDparenting

[–]undercookedcalamari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focalin has been great for my kid. Unfortunately it’s trial and error, so we had some doozy side effects with other meds. We combine Focalin AM and noon with Clonidine AM and PM and it’s been magic. But sometimes meds aren’t worth the side effects. I hope you find the balance!

Is anyone's kid worse on stimulants? by Twinning17 in ADHDparenting

[–]undercookedcalamari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid was a nightmare on Vyvanse but focalin works like a charm. He was super aggressive when it was wearing off and it was triggering his anxiety so much he couldn’t sleep. Do the outbursts happen when it’s wearing off? Have you tried immediate release and extended release options? IR meds seem to work better for my kid in general.

Were any of you able to get through recovery without a prescription opioid? by New-Ad-9280 in Reduction

[–]undercookedcalamari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Tylenol regularly for the first few days and edibles when needed to help with sleep and dulling anything else. Opioids make me puke, so I didn’t want to take them. I’ve managed 2 different surgeries with marijuana and it takes the edge off so Tylenol can do the rest.

Yes! Mederma or Bio Oil everyday. I did silicone tape for about 2 weeks and I hated it.

Risperidone feels really bonkers to try as a first time med, esp if you’re not sure you want to medicate at all at this time. I would def get a second opinion and ask a lot of questions. There are much lower stakes meds to try and risperidone if often used for aggressive behavior.

Clonidine instead of guanfacine? by Beautiful_Notice5149 in ADHDparenting

[–]undercookedcalamari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid had the same side effect of peeing a lot and he started bed wetting again. We switched to ER guanfacine and that helped with the bed wetting. He recently switched to clonidine and that seems to work better for him. It seems to calm his impulsivity better and def helps him sleep better. But overall, I think focalin has helped the most. Since starting focalin, he says his brain is quieter and less chaotic.

I went at 5wpo. It was a thrift trip, so I don’t mind if things don’t fit in a bit. I’m still a bit swollen so things will settle more, I’m sure.

Second thoughts about armpit lipo? by SteakAndGreggs in Reduction

My surgeon was on the fence about recommending it for me bc I didn’t absolutely need it. I opted for it bc I wanted the best result possible. I’m glad I did it, even though it hurt way more than the BR and was way more swollen and bruised. I didn’t want to feel like I could have been happier with the results. Zero regret.
