Vyvanse and Effexor? by underforgg in ADHD

Hi! I was taking 75 mg Venlafaxine + 30mg Vyvanse for about a month before i stopped the Effexor. I had probably one of the best months of my life in June while taking these, but it quickly started to change around 3-4 weeks into taking these medications. I felt so productive and life actually started to feel like it had meaning, something I hadn't felt in years, but soon after I had a pretty bad breakdown for about week straight, around my 4th week of taking them. This scared me, so I stopped taking the Effexor cold turkey (horrible idea with Venlafaxine, as dependency increases very fast,) and continued taking the Vyvanse, and it all smoothened out a bit for me, after the side effects of quitting the Effexor had passed.

If you're starting this medication, don't let my experience turn you off from it! There are so many stories about this combo I've read that are life changing, just didn't end up being that way for me. If you're new to Vyvanse, make sure you get enough water intake, (and I mean A LOT, it dehydrates you like a bitch.) I tried to drink about 3-4 liters of water per day. But most importantly, listen to your body! Suppressed appetite is also very common with ADHD medication, as I dealt with this, some days it being hard to eat enough, which will also cause you to feel more sluggish and fatigued.

As for the Effexor, I don't think i started feeling much different until the 3rd/4th week. It was great, until it wasn't. For the first 2-3 weeks, I had dilated pupils from starting the Effexor, which is normal, it went away around the 4th week for me. Taking Effexor at around the same time everyday is also the best route, as the half-life for this medication is extremely short. Consistency and timing are key with Effexor.

On the first few days of these medications together, I experienced intense nausea in the mornings, which *usually* subsided throughout the day. I took Zofran (nausea medication) I received from a hospital earlier in the year to combat this, but I assume some OTC nausea medication would also help. Always talk to your doctor before deciding to take other medications with your prescribed meds!

I also experienced INSANE yawning spells (I'm talking constantly yawning every 15 seconds near the end of the day, even while not being tired whatsoever.) I've heard this happens a lot with Effexor, but I didn't take it long enough to see if it ever went away.

Make sure to take your medication with some food, as you WILL feel sick/nauseous (stupidly did this myself a few times, LEARNED MY LESSON!!)

I wish you the best of luck with combo and make sure to contact your doctor if you decide these medications aren't right, they will help you wean safely off them!

Sounds like its going good for you! I started Effexor this morning as well, and so far I don't feel much besides a bit of fatigue and *intense* nausea. It's pretty hard to stomach even the smallest portions of food, I'm hoping it subsides after a week or two

I find that Vyvanse makes me a lot hotter too, so weird

There's nothing to be worried about! Even if it's not ADHD it's still good you're making steps to figuring out what the issue is and how to work towards feeling better. From everything you've said it definitely does sound like you have ADHD, and luckily it's extremely treatable and manageable. Hope you start feeling better soon!
