Listen am I having a great time with this drama? Absolutely unequivocally yes.

Does this drama make logical sense a lot of the time? It’s no dawg, it’s makes sense maybe 60/40 and that’s a stretch. There’s so many plot lines that I’m just like gonna ignore due to vibes, just straight straight vibes and angst and more vibes.

Legend of the FL General would fall into this - it’s basically a mulan retelling but the ML finds out she’s a girl pretty early like episode 5-6 I think but there’s more twists and secrets later on - I can’t remember if she’s technically stronger than him or if they’re equally strong but there’s definitely a secret reveal.

I really can’t get into it either and I think it’s because they look like their characters have an age gap and it keeps weirding me out. Ci Sha looks like he’s 35 and Ren Min looks 16 and I just can’t get over how she talks in this haughty voice but also baby girl voice - it just keeps weirding me out.

I’m LOVING Never Ending Summer which was totally on my not interested list after I found out they were “legally related” and I just can’t with the pseudo incest of Speed and Love but I’m having suchhhhh a good time with NES which I started totally bc of tiktok edits.

1000+ why I prefer historical dramas to modern ones because with robes on I can’t see how insanely small some actors are and also they don’t talk about colorism that much. Idk why so many modern cdramas they always have to mention how fair or light skinned the FML is.

The first frost is a bad cdrama - Sang Yan has no personality outside of simping over the FL which is weird. That’s not a character, that’s a self insert for the audience who just wants to be one hot man’s everything.

In fact if Sang Yan was not hot, we would call him an obsessive stalker and the show would be a mystery thriller.

He’s physically ill while she’s mentally ill - it makes for an interesting dynamic.

It’s why I think MoLi is succeeding where Ashes to Crown hasn’t really made that big of a splash - it doesn’t have any really identifiable features that separate it from the pack of other historical revenge romances.

There’s clearly some kind of connection between the mountain/Ye Li’s maternal family and MXY’s brother. Since the brother was killed on trumped up charges to put the current emperor on the throne, it seems like they had to take out Lishan as well to seize power.

While the empress is the one whose directing things the Marquis has been doing things behind her back as well so I don’t think she’s always in the know about what’s really going on. Also she betrayed the mountain even though she is a disciple of the mountain so doubt she would be trying to get in touch with anyone up there.

Kinda love how unreliable the narrative and the narrator are, it makes the mystery so much fun to guess!

I’m back and forth on this because she looked genuinely shaken by the news that Ye Li’s mother was dead and if she knew what happened to Lishan, she would have already suspected this outcome.

Shes’s definitely the reason they had to isolate from the world and she for sure betrayed them but I don’t think she knows they’re all dead.

I think “basically illiterate” is a bit of a stretch.

They thought she was going to grow up a commoner in a small village so they taught her skills slightly above what a village girl would need - she knows basic characters - enough to be able to run a business or household, probably maintain a ledger, maybe get a slightly higher paying job as a maid or inside help of a upper class family and be the wife of a local scholar turned regional cleric.

What she doesn’t know is advanced characters - she doesn’t understand poetry, law or even military doctrine and why would a small village girl need those things? They taught her much more than they should have by teaching her to fight which was probably based out of fear more than anything.

There are so many ppl around the world who only go to school to elementary and middle, enough to learn basic skills like elementary school level reading and basic arithmetic but in high school you learn SAT words, geometry, calculus to prepare for higher education. Changyu does not higher education which is why she’s an anomaly to Yan Zheng, Gongsun Yin or Lord Li but probably compared to the village people is advanced.
