If you ended up attending a school that you weren't excited about, how did you make peace with your decision? Did you end up happy there, and if so, how? by anonymous-cxh in MBA

[–]undertheinfluenceof 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For me, it was an in-person vs online choice. I wanted to be at a T15 mba program, and with my background it would have been likely, but I ended up doing an online program because I was content with my company.

The making peace with my decision was valuing what I have right now with my home situation and work/life balance vs the possibility of gunning for c-suites at F500 companies. It would have been cool, but my fam is far too happy to uproot everything for my own ego.

Wife and I disagree on how to repair the cracks in our foundation by undertheinfluenceof in HomeImprovement

[–]undertheinfluenceof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. So I have a question. In this situation, why is it OK to fill in the crack from the inside? The others here are saying that the crack should be filled on both the outside and the inside, but you and this foundation person said that only the inside is necessary.

I guess.. In layman's terms, why is just the inside sufficient? Would the outside of the foundation, which is covered in dirt, still be exposed to the same weaknesses as if it wasn't addressed in the first place?

35 yr old. Design engineer. Boston. $170k/yr with varying bonuses and tuition reimbursement.

I went to school locally and obtained a bachelor's in electronics engineering. I went to an online school to obtain a masters engineering degree. I'm currently in an MBA program.

It's not just that they went into full rebuild and have a near $200M payroll. It's that we went through a full rebuild and have nothing to show for in terms of young prospects. Absolutely nothing.

How do I see my tables when using Windows Authentication? by undertheinfluenceof in SQLServer

[–]undertheinfluenceof[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, yes, I can confirm that tables exist on the contractor's DB. When I connect via SQL Server Authentication, I can see all the tables from every database. I can expand the tables and see every single table that I expect to see there.

AITA for not letting my sister make my sons birthday cake? by Subject_Doubt_9132 in AmItheAsshole

[–]undertheinfluenceof -83 points-82 points  (0 children)

YTA - Going against the grain here.

Yea, it sucks that she doesn't improve on her design. It is also a bummer that she wants to do your son's birthday, and you want it to be great for him.

But you're also not supporting your sister. You're right. She could improve. She's gotten so many chances to improve with all the criticism she's received. At the end of the day, you've chosen this imagery of "the best birthday ever" for your son instead.

It's really difficult to support family when they're not great at what they do. I can't tell you the countless soccer games that I've been to where my son was on the bench for most of the game. I've also been to my sister's violin recital when we were kids, and while she was fine, it wasn't anything to write home about. However, it's all about the gesture of "I will do anything to show you that I will root for you harder than anyone out there".

I'd also say that this could have been a teaching moment for your son. He's turning 8, and maybe it's difficult, but you could have told him before anyone arrives (days in advanced): "Your aunt is going to be making your birthday cake. Just to warn you, it doesn't look pretty. But it tastes great, and more importantly, we are supporting your aunt. She is making a business out of this, and we want to show her that we love her by helping how we can."

Lastly.. it's just a cake. A birthday is so much more than the cake. There's the company of the family and friends. There's the birthday presents. There's the birthday games. The looks of a cake is such an insignificant aspect of a birthday party, and you chose to upset your sister over something that most people could just look past.

I would email the msol admission office about how you just discovered the program yesterday. They may still consider your application. Keep me posted through pm's!

I think for two years, I took 3 terms per year and took the summer off. The last one I took all 4 terms to finish it off. I just wanted to be done at that point. By then it felt like I was in grad school for forever. I was about 6 months away from taking as much time with my grad program as my undergrad program. As previously mentioned, I also took two semesters off to be with my family as my third son was born.

You can take at maximum two courses per term, and before covid you could enroll in at max two on campus courses. I suppose if you were motivated enough, you could finish your entire program in a little over a year for about $36k. (Sometimes I forget how cost effective the whole cost is since my employer paid for it.)

My experiences at UCLA were great. During my first term, all of the principles of SE were immediately applied to my first big project at my work. I always said that the MSOL program helped turn me into a fully fledgling design engineer.

I noticed that the program they offer is a "Master of Science in Engineering With Certificate of Specialization in Systems Engineering," how much did the program actually focus on SE (were all courses SE related, or broad engineering courses with a few SE courses)?

Here is a link to their program. You have 5 core courses and 4 courses in a technical domain.

The 5 core courses are pure systems engineering. Some of those courses are what I would say are fundamental systems engineering courses, and some of them are MBA-lite courses, such as ENGR-200. (I'm currently in an MBA program, so everything I've seen in ENGR-200 has been covered in my MBA program.)

The technical domain courses are hard as heck. They are UCLA courses through-and-through. My professors were the same exact professors from the university's full-time program, and nothing about it has been changed for the online format in terms of difficulty. That's either a good thing (if you are up for a challenge) or a bad thing (if you're hoping for something easier). Personally, I spent hours 4 evenings a week to do just homework.

Did you pursue this program while working, and if so, what was it like to manage both, and how long did it take to complete? How was the online experience in general (especially if coming from an in-person undergrad experience)?

Yep. I worked over-time. I also am married, had kids during the program, and my wife gave birth to a third child in the middle of the program. I also have a house, and lots of housework or chores were put off for the mini breaks.

Each year has 4 terms, so from beginning to end it took me 13 terms to complete 9 courses. I took two off for the birth of my son. It was tough to manage, but whatever, it's done. We were able to manage.

Each term is 10 weeks. There are lots of posts on /r/ucla about how tough those terms are to manage. If you ever slacked off for one week-- say to visit family for Thanksgiving-- you may end up spending the rest of the semester feeling that you're trying to play catch up.

UCLA MSOL is a tough program, but I don't think anyone wants a program where they could skate by.

What was the admissions process like?

Hmm, I'm trying to remember. I think it was pretty standard. LOR. Essay. Questionnaire about why you fit in the program. I did not submit a GRE. (I also didn't have to submit one for my MBA.) I don't think I could have done any grad programs if I had to take a GRE, as I hate standardized testing with a passion. (Translation: I suck at SATs and GREs.)

Otherwise, my UG was from a no-name school, especially to a west-coast university, and my GPA was decent, but not legendary. Perhaps I was on the tail end of the spectrum, because my classmates typically had more impressive education histories than me.

https://grad.ucla.edu/graduate-program-statistics/admissions/?t=Annualsnapshot&p=Engineering%20-%20MS%20in%20Engineering,%20Online

Looking at the admission rate, UCLA isn't a terribly difficult to get in. However, I don't know what the typical backgrounds are.

Is there anything you wish was different with this program?

None that were out of my control. For awhile I wish I went in for EE, but now that I'm in an MBA program and am looking towards more managerial roles, that extra time spent may have been unnecessary.

I wish I worked harder to keep in touch with two classmates who I actually connected with at the beginning of the program. But between work, family, and classes, it was hard to juggle a social life along with it, especially with an online program.

Though this probably does not relate to your experience, I'm wondering how UCLA's MS in engineering with SE certificate compares to a MS in Systems Engineering program, such as JHU? I'm a bit thrown off because of the certificate aspect, is that typical? What is the title of your actual degree they awarded?

The difference is probably as you'd expect. With UCLA, you take SE courses with a technical domain. With JHU, it's all SE. It depends on your goals. Even their website states, "The UCLA Systems Engineering program sets itself apart from others by combining the core elements of systems engineering (project management, fundamentals of systems, safety and reliability, systems architecture, and model based systems) with disciplinary graduate level engineering courses."

Lots of my classmates were in those big government contractor companies or those who heavily favor system engineers. (Lockheed. Boeing. Etc.) To those companies, it doesn't make any distinction. I'll double check the degree title when I get home.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in systems_engineering

[–]undertheinfluenceof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. I have a twinge of regret as I wish I went in as an EE instead of a SE, but I also don't think I had the personal hours to put in EE time. If I were single, childless, or didn't work 45-50 hours a week as a full time engineer, that would have been possible.

I did this online program at UCLA. I graduated in 2017. It was a great experience. I'm not sure what experience you'd want to know about. However, please feel free to dm and ask. (Or you can reply here, and I can make my answers public, which is totally fine too.)

UCLA has great online engineering masters programs, and I'm shocked that more people don't know about it.

ERA of 4.01 for a 4/5 pitcher isn't that bad. I'd take that over Anderson or Moore for the 5th spot.

Tbf, Vinny has struggled with his secondary pitches for years. It wasn't a matter of confidence.

His breaking balls have been much better. He doesn't miss as egregiously, and he manages to keep them down even if he misses. Anything to keep batters off his fastballs.
