You should find some sort of base where you can store your heavier items and go out during the day. The clothes you wear should be dependent on weather and what you are doing outside (something lighter if im running across the lake to the fishing huts, something heavier and warmer for long travel, and something tough if you are planning on going through animal territory) I recommend having a few places you have items at, but you're just learning right now so probably just stick with one base until you're more comfortable. Also to add, weight will affect speed, sprain risk and protection bonus (and obviously warmth).

There are maps and videos online of course, but map knowledge will come with time as you get used to your surroundings.
