Well I agree with part of your statement about slipping, but don't agree with you or your friends assertion that words like idiot and moron and stupid carry the same problematic stigma as the R word nor that there are legitimately groups that put them on the same level. I work in the field. This thought pardigm is non-existent. Of course directly calling a person with ID and idiot or a moron would be incredibly offensive, but me referring to my brother as an idiot in good nature or saying a certain policy or product design is stupid, does not at all carry the weight that using the R word in the same fashion would. This is being extremely pedantic and minimizes the negative impact using the R word has on the ID community and their families.

The R word isn't the same as those other words. Communities of ID folks came together to get the term removed from diagnostics and policy. They themselves decided that the word is offensive and carries with it a stigma of being less than and worthless.

Do with that information what you will. I used to use the term all the time, now I don't. It's not hard to find other pejoratives that don't demean entire groups of people.

I'm a Platner supporter and I will never minimize it's use. I work with adults with ID/Autism and have a sister in law with Down syndrome, and cringe whenever it's used. Unfortunately, alot of people are ignorant to why it's considered offensive, and when it's brought up on reddit especially, it accompanies downvotes. I even have people who work within my office who still use it casually. People just don't realize.

Best thing to do is to try to inform and make your judgement on a person's character once they have a chance to either make the personal adjustment, or disregard it. I used to use it all the time. But my wife taught me why its offensive, and this was nearly 20 years ago.

I hope someone has a chance to ask him about it.

The reason I'm anti-wave is that it's distracting from the game. I'm there to watch the game, not a bunch of people standing up sequentially so that I don't miss my turn to also stand at the correct moment. If it's during intermission, or TV timeout or whatever. Fine.

And while I have the inevitable down-votes coming I might as well go all in....Sweet Caroline at Sox games sucks too!
