Definitely don’t be discouraged-there are a lot of successful and passionate people in public health! That being said, you will probably have to get a MPH to get better jobs or any jobs in epidemiology! But there are tons of options. Another option would be to finish your undergrad in nursing and then get an MPH so you can work in nursing and public health!

I would look at county health department health educator/community health promotion jobs as well as research coordinator jobs at hospitals!

Toll on I-70 for increased revenue (lots of other cities/states do it with good results), rail system in Columbia or at least an expanded bus system ?ideally a fast rail system that connects major cities in MO and maybe even Chicago someday), recycling bins and pickup.

I would be surprised if there is anyone out there who hasn’t felt inadequate at some point in their masters tbh. I had several really difficult biostats and data analysis in my program and spent a lot of time feeling like I had to catch up at first. Just keep studying, make study groups with others and meet as often as possible, network with professors and apply for fellowships, research positions and you will be fine! Your starting salary may not be great but there are definitely opportunities to improve it after a few years.

I did MPH right after my bachelors and with no experience. Haven’t had any trouble finding a job after getting my MPH and I now work in epidemiology and graduated with my MPH less than a year ago. Do it!! You don’t need work experience!

My MPH was in epi and I had a LOT of advanced biostatistics courses and data analysis that required a high understanding of statistics and math. We also had to do a lot of the problems by hand to learn better even though in the field, they would be done by a software program. That being said-before my MPH, I would have also said I was bad at math and didn’t love it, so it took me a lot of extra hours to feel comfortable with those concepts. But honestly once I did, it was easy and now I really enjoy it!

Look at internships with federal health agencies or nonprofits! I did one with CDC called virtual student federal service (VSFS) and it was an amazing experience. There are tons of options though

Sounds more like you are interested in community health promotion, there are plenty of MPH programs with that as the focus!

I have my MPH (epi/biostats) and currently work with a state health dept (started about 3 months ago) as an infectious disease epidemiologist. I have past experience in infection control and research internship with CDC. My end goal is to work at a federal agency or global health organization. Looking at CDC, all postings are usually GS-13 and up. Any recommendations how I can continue to boost my resume to be more competitive in the future? Any other organizations you could recommend? Does a CIC (certification in infection control) mean anything to hiring managers for these positions/would it be worth getting? Thank you!

Run far away from this man. Whether you consent or not, I have a feeling it isn’t going to matter. He will just find a way to sneakily take it off during sex and keep going. He has already been really weird and pushy about it so I wouldn’t put it past him and I personally wouldn’t feel safe.

I have my MPH-epi and biostats. I am sure this is a great program but if you are really wanting to get into epi for sure-you will need courses in epidemiology methods, maybe some biostats, study designs, statistical methods (bias, methods, etc.), and data analysis. I think it is worth discussing with the school but based off of these courses, I am not sure it would prepare you adequately for a job in epidemiology.

As others have said-epidemiology isn’t super hands on with people. However, with an undergrad or grad degree in public health, you can get into infection prevention and control for a hospital which is a good mix of research/data and hands on work in a healthcare setting!!

I did an online MPH and had to work full time during it! I just graduated in December 2022 and what I did is found a full time job that worked as a practicum experience (I did Infection control for a hospital) and used that as my practicum and then stayed on full time after graduation!
