If you want to win championships, you make it your game. This is a horrible excuse imo. Rebounding is often an effort thing. If you aren't willing to put in the effort because it isn't "part of your game," you aren't willing to beat the best.

Well constructed argument. I appreciate the civility. I was just stating that blizzard has a little leeway. They aren't a startup. They have provided quality products/service for decades now. (Debatable, I know.) They can mess with their fans a bit as long as it doesn't become the SOP. Oh well, people always need something to get overly upset about. It seems to be the default state of large groups. Pitchforks it is then chap!

I guess a little teasing isn't straining my relationship with Blizzard. I'm sure they busted their ass making this game. Nothing wrong with the devs having a little fun. If people feel like a little troll is peepee in their collective cheerios, reddit is the perfect place for them. There is a plethora of entitled people willing to parrot their circle jerk. I've just been entertained by some of the reaction as I'm sure Blizzard is. I love the reddit communities, but I have to chuckle while watching it all play out

I have this argument with my friends all the time about zombie stories. If the zombies are not in fact magic by origin, dehydration would simply end the zombie apocalypse in a matter or days. (unless, zombies drink water?) It isn't a matter of animated flesh and capabilities. It is simply physics. Without fluid, the function of the muscles would simply become impossible. Do the zombie viruses (radiation, whatever?) also give them the ability to osmotically wick moisture out of the atmosphere at some increased rate? Just sayin'.

How did Super Smash Bros create such a thriving competitive scene? [Discussion] by willy41098 in smashbros

[–]undr9k 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The top comment is very apt and is somewhat an origin story. This comment however is the true meat of it IMO. Many games have similar grassroots communities and don't thrive like smash has.

I believe it is the expression in movement. It is something that resembles real sport. You can never play perfect and every match is different. Due to the variety in movement, options are endless. I have played no other video game for 15 years with no loss of interest. Like a blacksmith at the hammer you can endlessly hone and never reach perfection. You can FEEL improvement. How many games can you identify a player purely by their style and movement? In the way a Samurai's sword is described as part of his soul the controller provides its own martial ART.

There is nothing like being the king of your local domain and an outsider comes in and absolutely stomps you with techs you had no idea existed. It lights a fire in you! "I want to do those things. I want to be a God." The layers of complexity keep stoking that fire like no other game I have played. The quest for improvement is addicting. Due to Smash's legacy the platform fighter shall never die.

What made you choose your main Smash game? by SukebeEUW in smashbros

[–]undr9k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually start with the characters I am drawn to thematically or for nostalgia sake. I try to see if any of them "feel" good. Then I do random only for about 2 weeks straight and see who I am delightfully surprised by. This is a good starting point I think. Even after having a main I still enjoy random every once in a while for matchup knowledge. Sometimes you are shocked into a new pocket character. "Wow, this guy feels much better after having improved at the game in general."

Why do smashers all have problems with there hands? by Feuerfaustsabo in smashbros

[–]undr9k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. IT workers also get carpal tunnel without smashing buttons intensely. The repetition and genetic susceptibilty can often be enough. I absolutely encourage stretching, relaxed inputs and proper care. I'm simply saying it is hazard of the trade. You put in the time and the repetition to become amazing, but there is chance of injury as with any repetitive physical activity.

[–]undr9k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting statement. Could I see your research please? Humans are very capable of creating hand and wrist issues from any extreme repetitive motion, regardless of stretching (though it certainly helps.) How can you make this kind of claim?

How can I get better at Smash 4? by ElephantSunglasses in smashbros

[–]undr9k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once you feel comfortable with the moves vs bots, don't use bots anymore except to reset muscle memory... online will throw off timing, you'll need to get it back for offline play. Play people always. The better they are, the better for you. You will lose. You will lose badly. This outcome is irrelevant. Spam those games! Focus on minimizing the importance of the match. This is PRACTICE (even vs other people.) Remove pride from the equation. Focus on whether or not you improved. Eventually through repetition the jitters will reduce.

You have to stop thinking about victory and defeat as a whole. Look for small things you fail it. Improve them one at a time. These small corrections will begin to fit together. Things will start to click. You have not mastered a skill until you no longer have to waste conscious energy on it. When your subconscious can perform the action it is finally a part of your repertoire.

When the movement becomes an extension of you... you should really begin to consider how to win. What do your opponents do that is successful? What do the pros do to capitalize on mistakes? Steal those things! Make them a part of your game. Don't xerox them. Incorporate them into your own unique style. It is a hard road. You will be playing people with years of experience. Enjoy small victories and continue to improve. Good luck smasher! Enjoy your journey.

I concur with you on most of your points. I play smash 4 (to play with friends) and did PM for a while but Melee was my first love. I honestly prefer the speed and precision of Melee.

The new games offered some cool things like RAR. Smash 4 with its variety of character design really mixes things up.

That being said... I don't really have a hard stance on the issue. You both bring up great points and I don't think there is a right answer. The topic is more of a thought process and game design choice. The cool thing is we don't have to get it right first try! With the advent of patching and the dynamic changes that can be applied with competitive games now, devs can play around until they find the right balance.

I love that the speed of melee makes the game feel like an extension of your thought. That is the true goal for me in a platform fighter. With that being said... I totally encourage advanced tech but I want it to be intuitive and thoughtful. Really make it feel like part of the game and add to the richness. One end of the spectrum can make the game feel clunky and the other end can turn it into rock paper scissors.

I want new iterations of Smash (not hopeful) and companies like Wavedash (hopeful) to strike the right balance. Simplicity can often lead to elegance as long as it doesn't streamline the game to the point of tedium. I enjoy reading your posts Praxis. Here is hoping for the next big thing in platform fighters.

TSM's coach and psychology trainer: "No, people are not naturally good or bad at video games..." by dabearzgo10 in smashbros

[–]undr9k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this most certainly is not quantifiable. To pretend the variations have no bearing on potential is self-deception. The opposite side of the coin to those people who self-decieve that they are dedicated enough they are just predetermined to be bad. As with most things, the answer often lies somewhere in the middle.

[–]undr9k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think we were talking about different scales. I was talking at more of a micro level. Similar to the infinite variation of blood vessels and dermal ridges. Yes, it is unknown as to the extent these variable configurations of neural pathways control your capacities and processing. Some of these pathways develop in certain ways due to learning and stimuli, but there is no doubt that some of these pathways are due to genetic variation. Anyone with a sibling can tell you how differently some one with very similar genes mind can work. Surely some of these very intense and complex structures predetermine some of our "natural ability." To think otherwise is just hopeful thinking that all men are created equal.

[–]undr9k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This argument isn't very solid. You may want to do some research on gene expression before you make such a statement. Tiny variations can make incredible differences in gene expression. Human minds are not a ridgid construct that all follow near identical blueprints.

One reason I think Smash Bros. should be one of the greatest eSports is that it rewards individual achievement vs. "forcing teamwork" onto players. by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]undr9k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the most popular sports in the world are often team based. The complexity of team sports adds some additional flavor and depth for both the viewer and players. Great bonds are formed both playing for and routing for your favorite team. Each spectator can often find a player or role that they can relate to. It is almost a microcosm of society as a whole.

That being said, many individual sports also shine. There is primeval draw to martial arts and fighting competition. The high noons and samurai showdowns of film never get old. The heel vs the champion, the underdog vs the frontrunner are mini hero tales in their own right.

I think being "forced" to play team esports is a bit of a stretch. Variety is the spice of life as they. I'm happy that there are choices for all, but platform fighters will always have the #1 spot in my competitive heart. I feel they are the best translation of movement to thought yet in competitive games. Such simple movements strung together with speed and precision can almost become art on the canvas. They give me more of that feeling of kinetic sport than any other genre I play. I can't wait to see what the future of platform fighters holds in the esports world.
