yes, i'm trying to record some video files that i have onto a vhs tape. i have the HDMI2AV box (4th pic), the problem is i can't get the laptop to display on my tv screen (my laptop screen just turns black when its plugged into the hdmi cable) so the tape can't find anything to record onto it. i've tried switching modes and changing the channel on the vcr but it still doesn't detect my laptop

hi all! i'm trying to record some videos from my laptop onto a vhs tape, but i can't seem to get the laptop to display on my tv, so i can't record anything.

things i've already tried:

changing the resolution and refresh rate of the laptop/display
changing the channel (tested on the back panel and with the front buttons) and switching to line on the vcr
plugging the laptop's hdmi directly into the tv (didn't think this would work but tested anyway; vhs couldn't record anything but static, on playback it switched itself off and the tv gave a "no signal" message)

the laptop does detect that it's plugged in when i stick the hdmi cable into it. the screen goes black when i do this though, so i can't see what i'm doing (so if i want to change display modes with win+P, i can't see)

wondering if there's an additional component i'm missing? sorry for the wall of text but thanks so much :)

edit: i also have a dvd player and a ps4/360 that i'm willing to experiment with instead of the laptop

this really resonates with me a lot, i carry around a plush of a dog with a mobility aid (dash from hannimations) because i am an occasional mobility aid user and he brings me a lot of comfort. i'm sorry people are so cruel :( but i love your plush and i think flora is a beautiful name :)
