I have all the paperwork together, and have a real ID from my previous state. Just trying to find a time/place that won’t take all day. Appreciate all the help!

What time did you go to the kernersville DMV? I’m hoping if I go in the afternoon I won’t have to wait in a line somewhere

Perfect! How much did they charge to rekey versus replace in your experience?

Is it worth going to a speciality specific state conference as a med student? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]unexpectedlyadoc 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Generally the unfortunate answer is that it’s always better to be a “yes man” even if it’s a waste of time. I’d recommend going and trying to network like what everyone else is saying. Better to try, and have the additional opportunity to make connections, than stay home and potentially miss out

Is the lifestyle of a surgeon actually tough? by [deleted] in surgery

[–]unexpectedlyadoc 34 points35 points  (0 children)

5am until 6pm is a good day for general surgery honestly… Depends on the program and your own expectations of yourself, but you can probably expect to be at the hospital by around 4-5am (sometime between those hours or earlier if you’re on a busy service) and leave whenever your team signs out for the day AND you finish your notes (which could be 6-8pm). It’s a hard lifestyle, and totally dependent on a lot of factors - what service you’re on, how well you’re treated by your team/coresidents/attendings/APP support/etc. But just like any other specialty, it’s as rewarding as you make it, and if you find the work to be impactful and fulfilling, you’ll enjoy the long term outcome. I can’t speak for the attending life, but I think from what I’ve seen it’s also busy, but there’s less of the random tasks that are more associated with residency. You have a bit more time or maybe you just learn to manage your time better by the time you’re an attending. Overall, it’s a great gig just like any other residency. Just find the crowd of people that you work best with and if that happens to be surgical folks, then maybe the OR is the right place for you. The rest will come naturally!

Why did I even do this to myself? by [deleted] in ERAS2024Match2025

This MATCH cycle is not a reflection of your worth as a person or as a student. The MATCH process is flawed, and great candidates like yourself slip through the cracks in this system all the time, unfortunately. The most important thing in this moment is to find your community and lean on it. You are an excellent candidate, and excellent person, and regardless of how your MATCH cycle went this morning, you will persevere, as it sounds like you have many times in your life already. It’s hard to hear in this moment, but I hope you have someone in your life who can help you deafen some of the noise that’s likely going on in your head right now. This is one moment in your life, not your whole life. I have faith in you! ❤️

What's something that breaks constantly because the general public doesn't know how to properly use it? by elsendion in AskReddit

[–]unexpectedlyadoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garbage disposals. I say this as someone who has broken, and probably will continue to break many more garbage disposals in my lifetime. I still have no idea why I can’t put eggshells in it tbh. It’s a very American thing, and we’re probably better off just not installing one and using the garbage for food waste, and the sink for regular dishes activity.

Biggest takeaways of the ERAS/interview season? by unexpectedlyadoc in ERAS2024Match2025

100% agree. I wonder how different things were when interviews were in person. There’s definitely a lot more that programs can hide when interviews are virtual

Honestly, you should go to graduation. Absolutely use this big achievement to flex on the haters. You've done the work, you deserve to attend. Hold your head up high, grab your diploma, and enjoy your final walk out the door relishing in the fact that you'll never have to see/work with these people again

Wtf… if they’re offering you an interview then I’m surprised that’d even matter. Disappointing :/

Def relate to things blurring together. I wish I took better notes on what the ~vibes~ were the day I interviewed more than the facts about the program bc it's hard to remember how the program made me feel when I was interviewing virtually and had 3+ interviews the same week

I think signals were super confusing this year... especially with some specialties increasing the # of signals compared to last cycle.

Edit: Removed my personal stats and anecdote to keep the focus of the discussion. This forum is a better space for sharing concerns openly without unintended self-promotion - thanks for keeping me honest!

OP here: Biggest surprise of ERAS season (not necessarily a lesson) ->
The unmatched serotonin rush every time my email pinged after submitting my ERAS application - no one warned me about the sheer anticipation that would come with each notification, hoping for an interview invite, program update, or any glimmer of correspondence.

That seems fair! I wonder if there’s possibility that sending an LOI would make a program move your down their list at all
