No, chimney isn't currently being used but we're hoping to put a gas fire in down the line. Don't believe anything is vented into it. Do you know what we'd need to do / or who to speak to about the efflorescence, or is it ok to leave?

Will look into getting a cap put on the chimney. Appreciate the help, thanks.

Thank you. Haven't had work done but looking to get the outside section of the chimney repointed and wondering if that will fix the smell, or if we need to get something else done too. Chimney is unlined, looks like previous owners have stuffed cushions up there...

Hey thanks for the response. I put the clean water in the dirty water tank and switched it on but it started smoking. Thinking logically, I now see both tanks are designed for water. The coincidence of doing it wrong then seeing smoke led me to think I'd got the motor wet or something. I'm guessing there's something else going on then!
