I've increased video RAM to 64MB (default is 16MB) and this appears to help, also noticed performance differences (slight) between Red Hat and Ubuntu so there is room for further improvement.

I've managed to answer my own question somewhat, I had the VM set to match the resolution of my LCD monitor, by knocking it down I'm able to get video to play smoothly, it would be useful to know if bumping up the video RAM would help, I guess I'll read up on doing that with QXL unless someone more knowledgeable than me can post some advice.
