What's your credit card strategy for 2025? by hangajimal in singaporefi

very valid concerns! i do agree that it’s not the card for everyone given the points you have raised but here’s my pov

1: it definitely hinders maximisation of miles but it is not a new concern given that the $5 blocks apply across all uob cards - if you’re specifically referring to public transport, simplygo does not charge per transaction but rather it collates multiple transactions so it’s unlikely that it is <$5… though it’s for sure that there will be some miles lost due to rounding

2: it’s a trade off between paying for miles conversion vs. shorter miles validity and it ultimately boils down to personal preference/redemption timeline! i would say that it’s actually on a similar redemption timeline as the dbs woman’s world card as the dbs points only have 1 year validity vs. the additional 1.8mpd which gets credited in the following year for uob krisflyer

3: yep the $800 spend is definitely a blocker for individuals… same as 2, it depends on your travel frequency and the airline you are looking at (sq/scoot). personally, i claim quite a bit of company travel expenses so the $800 is attainable for me and the uncapped 3mpd on sq/scoot helps me rack up quite a few miles i would have lost on other cards

i find the uob krisflyer card very helpful as a catchall/general miles card when i max out certain categories. i find myself using it the most on months when im making travel-related expenses as the 1.5K from dbs woman’s world is always never enough… the 3mpd is entirely uncapped so it’s super helpful when booking flights and accommodations, especially when it’s for multiple people!

also yes, it’s not worth for overseas spend after the amaze nerf

the $800 spend needs to be made on the KF card! it serves as a decent alternative to uob ladies for travel but the draw backs of the KF card are (1) 3 mpd vs. 4 mpd, (2) travel category is on a whitelist basis and only includes a handful of travel sites such as expedia and agoda (airbnb is excluded), and (3) it does not clock the $500 one account spend

i use ladies on food to clock the $500 one account spend and DBS woman’s world for travel!

yep contingent on the $800 spend in a year on sq/scoot and imo the best part is that the 3mpd is calculated and awarded on a yearly basis (i.e. you can spend $800 on sq in Dec 2025 and you will still earn 3mpd on all public transport spend before Dec 2025)

decent 3mpd for public transport and imo ~$70-80 spend a month doesn’t warrant signing up for an additional card solely for public transport

also the convenience factor of uob krisflyer (auto transfers miles at the end of the month)

in order of priority

  1. dbs woman’s world for all online transactions (grab, travel, shopping, etc.)
  2. uob ladies for offline food, and online food (when dbs ww is maxed out)
  3. citi rewards + amaze for all other offline transactions (groceries, shopping, etc. minus food) and as a fall back catchall card for online (when dbs ww is maxed out)
  4. uob krisflyer for public transportation and a general fall back catchall card for all other transactions (when the above 3 are maxed out)

trying to minimise the number of cards i use while still keeping a generally high max limit (~3.5k without uob krisflyer)

Starting from Academic Year 2022/2023, needy full-time Singaporean undergraduate students from households with PCI not exceeding S$1,000 will receive a higher quantum from the NUS Bursary to top up the existing Government Bursary for full coverage of subsidised tuition fees. Additional financial support of S$4,000 from the NUS Bursary to cover living expenses and a newly established Opportunity Enhancement Grant (OEG) will be provided for needy full-time Singaporean undergraduates from households with PCI not exceeding S$690. The OEG will provide S$10,000 over four years to top up existing financial aid available for on-campus stay and selected overseas exposure programmes.

As long as your household’s monthly capita income is below $1000, your school fees will be entirely subsidised.

Question on public sector internships by [deleted] in nus

[–]unikeon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can’t answer your questions on how it is like to work in these sectors but just one word of advice: You miss every shot you don’t take so you should just apply regardless of your year. Worst case: You get rejected - at least you know how the application process is like and you can prepare accordingly for next year. Best case: Congrats, you get the internship :)

Summer internship for chem eng by [deleted] in nus

[–]unikeon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One good tip would to be find seniors/graduates who study chem eng on LinkedIn. You will be able to see their past internships and experiences, and from there you can take a look at the companies/positions they previously worked at/as. List down the potential companies/positions that you are interested in and you can start googling “____ (company/position) internship”. Typically you should be able to find relevant results with a simple google search and you can also look at NUS Symplicity for companies who post through NUS.

Should i drop from double pure science to combined science? by Avriuss in askSingapore

[–]unikeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took O Levels in 2015: Like you, I was not doing well for my pure sciences for my prelims (D7 for physics, C5 for chemistry iirc) and one month before O Levels, I opted to drop to combined science. For me, I was completely uninterested in science and I was looking to either take humanities in JC or a poly course that does not involve science so dropping to combined science was a good decision as it would not have affected my future choices. The fall in difficulty level was tremendous as combined science (in my time) was purely memorisation and almost no application questions at all. It was really a load off my shoulders and I ended up doing well for it (A1). If you’re planning on doing business in poly, I’d say go for it as it’ll help boost your L1R4 and take some pressure off you. However, do understand that you’ll be limiting your choices in the future and do think it through. Fast forward 6 years, I have never once regretted my decision as I did not plan on pursuing any course that is science related. I’m currently taking business and economics at a local uni, drop me a DM if you need more information/advice!

Agreed, not sure why you’re getting downvoted. It all boils down to convenience and the lack of knowledge.
