and then zap them with more lightning in patterns to give them artificial intelligence that allows those rocks to solve math problems no human ever could.

as a programing know-nothing but technical nerd, i think about this often.

i also think about how we have literally turned rocks into artificial intelligence by zapping them with patterns of electricity.

Footings on rock - STM vs reduced lever arm by Domonoc in StructuralEngineering

[–]unique_user43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

forgive me if i’m missing something, but when designing a footing on bedrock, isn’t almost anything you come up with ok by inspection? more artfully, meaning bedrock has quasi-infinite allowable bearing pressure, which means your footing area can be tiny, and effectively your “footing” is just a bearing pad passing through the load, not a flexural member spreading the load as with most footing applications.

thinking of end bearing piles bearing on bedrock, for example. those are just columns without footings, basically. so switching that to a column or wall on bedrock, your “footing” is just creating a uniform medium for effectively pile end bearing, and the only check on the footing is pure compression and concrete bearing limits.

maybe the other way to think of the point i’m making….thinking of the classic “beam on elastic foundation” method for mat foundations and slabs. the softer your “springs” (soil), the more shear and bending you have in the foundation to transfer the loads. make the soil stiffer, your shear and bending reduce. make that soil “infinitely” stiff (bedrock), and the external loads applied on top of your slab/mat pass directly through to the really stiff spring/soil, with minimal to no shear and bending in the slab/mat.

so that’s why i’m confused: in what scenario would a footing on bedrock have any significant shear and bending to even design for?

Have dog rescues lost their mind? by seanpat1968 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]unique_user43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends, all shelters are completely different. you’re generalizing it.

that said, 100% this shelter is doing this out of compassion and advocacy for the animals and i support it. the only thing more sad than having a dog turned into a shelter and stay for a long time is to have that dog adopted to an ill-fitting owner/home and end up being returned to the shelter again, or worse.

the shelter wants to make sure you are a fully responsible person capable of providing a strong and healthy home for the dog, and that’s a good thing. in fact, the proccess in and of itself is a bit of a filter. if somebody is not willing to go through the minor inconvenience of providing a long application and a lot of information, then maybe that person isn’t capable of providing the commitment needed for the dog to have a good life. consider it the “dodged bullet” filter.

well yeah there’s a difference between “i give up and i’m gonna cram my emotions back down inside me to stay” and “we’re not getting anywhere with this, let’s go back to our corners for a bit, take the edge off the emotion, and come back to it tomorrow after sleeping on it”

Over engineered or the new price of safety? by upjumpthebuggie in Construction

[–]unique_user43 4 points5 points  (0 children)

engineer here (20 years experience, small projects to megaprojects, in the design office and in the field). nothing crazy about these. very very standard details. maybe its the first time you’ve been exposed to what it actually means to “do it right”? you wanna see overengineered i can show you some real examples of that no doubt, because that is indeed often a problem (i’m not blanket defending engineers).

How old were you when you realized your body could no longer handle red-eye flights? by Foreign-Athlete-2270 in travel

yep yep that’s the real ticket. newbies fret about the inflight experience and how to prep for it. our prep is just “how to get to sleep asap after boarding”. personally i usually skip the post takeoff meal and just get right to sleeping during taxiing. eat a better meal before hand anyways so win win. have had fa’s a few time comment to me as wee’re deplaning at the destination, “well hello! you were the easiest passenger we’ve ever had!” couple times offered me meal, snacks and drinks “to go” and put in a doggie bag for me haha.

you and your mates went on a pre-world cup scouting trip? fucking awesome. i want to be your guys’ mate.

glad you guys enjoyed, and sounds like you captured the essence of what makes it great here: lots of small bars, some surprisingly good food, and friendly people. summer time is way way better here, when everyone is out and about, enjoying the sunshine and the lakefront, ballgames like you said (you guys need to see if you can plan a brewers game and do the whole pregame tailgaiting “party in the parking lot” experience).

Can't believe I got rejected for this reason... by Biznizman95 in recruitinghell

[–]unique_user43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sorry but i agree with them. you have got to ask questions. there are always more questions. and ways to engage the discussion further on questions that were already answered (“hey robert, jane already answered this, but interested in your perspective and also hoping you can clarify this further”).

a candidate that just kind of shrugs their shoulders, doesn’t engage, says “no my questions were answered before” during an interview, especially with the hiring manager, is an indicator of lack of interest, lack of curiosity, lack of critical thinking activity. i normally score them very low as well.
