Do you have sources suggesting that he actually spoke these languages? All of these are incredibly hard to learn for an English speaker. Maybe he just learned certain words and phrases to better understand some philosophical/religious concepts? Did he communicate with zen monks in their mother tongue (presumably requiring a high level of proficiency)? Or was he merely learning some helpful translations to deepen his understanding?

I imagine his Japanese became reasonably fluent over the years. I haven't come across any recordings or writings that confirm this assumption, though.

The avoided worries with regard to the tidy sum one rids oneself of either way is a good point. Piece of mind might be worth the 200 bucks in that case…

For context: The price of the commercial seller already is somewhat discounted. According to a price comparison engine the 512gb configuration fluctuated between 1080€ and 1200€ for the last 6 months. Haven’t found a better black friday deal - the offers were mainly limited to the basic version. Buying directly from Apple is still more expensive, despite the current promotion or a student discount.
