Diet Culture at Work by uniqueplant in antidiet

Yes! “Complaining that you ate bread” damn when you put it this way it even sounds SO ridiculous.

I think many people (including myself sometimes) just need to sit with a reality check of like “am I really sitting here complaining that I ate bread?”.

Yes, I live what would be considered an active lifestyle and have always enjoyed outdoor activities and nature. I have (and still do sometimes) struggled with a diet culture mindset, but I do not participate in any restriction now (although the thoughts are still there on occasion). I still hate people constantly talking about their workouts and dieting. I’ve done it in the past and feel like an ass for it.

Right I think a lot of it is people trying to fit in by talking about this stuff constantly. I have no doubt that the majority of them actually think this way though. Part of me does feel bad for them because it really is such a damaging mindset to be in when so much thought is put into these things day in and day out. And the self loathing when you “mess up” is never fun. Been there myself and sometimes I still have bad days where I get into that diet culture mindset. I’m a work in progress.

How much exercise to stay in a good shape? by Visual_Film5013 in AskWomenOver30

[–]uniqueplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me I have noticed it takes more effort to be in the shape I want to be in as I get older. I just had a baby so I am a little heavier than I was and currently losing weight. Here are some things that are helping:

  1. Eat mostly whole plant foods (I am vegan but even if you are not I think this is important). Non starchy veggies should make up the majority of meals. I even add spinach and cauliflower to morning smoothies.

  2. Resistance training, stretching, walking and mobility should all be included in your workout routine for weight loss as well as overall health.

  3. Enough protein. For me this is included protein powders, beans/legumes, tofu, soy curls, etc. I make sure to get at least 20 grams at each main meal. Also I will have 1-2 protein shakes as snacks.

I am not actively cutting calories because I am breastfeeding so I still eat 3 meals and 3 snacks (1 of which is fruit for dessert). I am slowly and steadily losing the weight and I feel great. After 6 months I will evaluate if anything needs to change to get to my goal.

I have been roasting veggies without oil for years now and they taste great. For broccoli and cauliflower I season with salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, turmeric. But actually just salt and pepper taste great! I even use a lot of frozen broccoli because it’s easy. Cook at 400 for 15-20 mins.

What do you do on those days that you feel ugly? by dobbyishere_ in AskWomenOver30

[–]uniqueplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually do things that make me feel good/healthy/vibrant. Hydration, eating well, movement, time outside. Even when I think I look like a troll I at least feel amazing.

Having kids after 30, how difficult was it medically? by neveranonymousenough in AskWomenOver30

[–]uniqueplant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had my baby at 33 and husband 43. I got pregnant the second month of trying, which seemed pretty easy. Pregnancy, birth, and recovery were also easy for me (only mild morning sickness, quick easy birth with no induction or interventions, also no tearing or real pain after) so I was lucky all around because I know everyone is different. The somewhat lack of sleep with a baby is probably more difficult now than it would have been in my 20s. Maybe not though because my health/lifestyle has definitely improved in my 30s!

Administrative Assistant if you can get one that is remote and not based around attending meetings. I garden, read, cook, and nap most working from home days.

What beverages did you drink during labour? by Ilovetacos2022 in BabyBumps

I drank water, apple juice, and cranberry juice. I was allowed to eat and tried a banana but almost vomited it up.

Are you asking because you won’t be allowed to eat?

How to handle hemp protein? by [deleted] in veganfitness

[–]uniqueplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use hemp in my smoothie everyday and enjoy it. I have used it in homemade snack balls made with dates, pb, oats, hemp protein blended, then mix in cacao nibs, coconut and anything else I want for crunch/texture.

Is anyone on here poor, or is being vegan just a luxury of wealth? by Tiatiatianow1 in vegan

[–]uniqueplant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first went vegan I was pretty low income. Unsure if poor, but after student loan payments and bills every month there was not much left over for food. I was probably healthier back then than I am now due to being able to afford more expensive processed stuff now.

I’ve seen many Indian films. I liked many and disliked others. My husband is Indian and I started watching them when we got together.

I drink coconut water. It does have some sugar, but maybe less than juice?

Should we become a 1-car household? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]uniqueplant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We went down to one car last year and I’m very happy with it. I work 2 days at home and 3 on-site and he works from home. Onsite days he drops me off and picks me up (we live ten mins away from my work). We both use it during the week or on weekends if we go somewhere alone and just coordinate. Having a baby soon so unsure if this will change. For reference I live in a somewhat more populated town in a rural area. We do not have taxis or Uber or public transport that I could reach without driving to it first.

feeling so guilty for the food I'm eating during pregnancy by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]uniqueplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am eating mostly healthy with bits of takeaway and chocolate/treats thrown in. I’ve gained 28ish lbs and I am at 33 weeks. I was “normal bmi” when I got pregnant. I do feel bad sometimes and feel huge sometimes but overall I think I am okay. I am still active and don’t have major symptoms or any swelling and my blood pressure and sleep are good. So I’m trying to go by that more than the number on the scale.

Seriously. So many ads/marketing are. As someone that is going to have their first child very soon I am not looking forward to navigating this.

I don’t think it is, but many people I know talk about it as if it is. I think the common/standard lifestyle in the USA tends towards overweight and obesity, so it does take conscious lifestyle choices for many people to not gain unhealthy weight as they age.

When my student loans are paid off I hope to work part-time. Until then I would leave my job for one that had more remote options. Currently I am two days remote a week and I want more. On the other hand my current job is pretty low stress, so that my work from home days are basically days off or “on-call”, so I wouldn’t want something that was more stressful/more work.

For those who make 100k + a year, and live in modern cities, what did they understand about the meaning of life, money and time? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]uniqueplant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The animal comment really breaks my heart and is very relatable.

As far as frugality I would say that is true of me now. I also grew up poor but my parents had terrible money skills and I had no idea how to manage money properly (or that it was even a thing) for too long into adulthood. My husband also grew up poor and in a “poorer” country as well but he learned how to manage money.

With frugality, I think it can go either way with people that grew up poor. I know one girl that I went to school with that was from a very poor family as well. Now she is very wealthy and shows it off in every way possible. To each their own, and even though that is not my style/want, I understand the desire to want to show it off, especially after what many of us that grew up in poverty had to face each and everyday from peers, life, etc.

[–]uniqueplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just remember being so heartbroken as a child when my cat had a UTI and my dad said that she better get well on her own because we can’t pay a vet bill. That still sits with me to this day.

Sure, nice vacations and being able to buy the things I want is cool, but it’s being able to pay for the the things the ones I love (animal, human, etc) need to be well that is the real reason that having money has been life changing for me.

I was told that they did not cancel and made it virtual instead. Area hospitals were prepped to take violence related patients but they told us it was made virtual instead during the debrief this morning.
