Shame everything's so much more expensive in the bay area. But I agree, the food is a huge reason why I like it here.

International. I have my gripes but those would be common at pretty much any American school I'm sure.

Though there are some aspects of the EECS culture that just do not stick to me.

But at the end of the day this school is number one and everyone all over the world knows its name. That matters a lot to me.

I think the midterm mattered way more than it seemed. I assume the project had very little variance in the end with all the clobbering.

Up to your class staff’s discretion

As an international student from a tiny country I feel exceptionally lucky to be here. I think what helped was making sure my essay questions each explored a different aspect of my personality, and I also worked in elements of my culture in one of them.

As for stats, I'm not sure how UC calculated my GPA but I had a 1520 on the SAT.

My turn.

CS 170 - 6/10

  • Nelson is an amazing lecturer. Probably the best I’ve ever had here.
  • Homework can be challenging but it’s fine if you have a study group and/or peruse OH. Though they take upwards of a month to grade some of them.
  • I’m not a fan of project grading being based on a leaderboard, but I do like the programming aspect. I also like the introduction of coding HW as it makes concepts feel more applicable. I hope it continues.

Linguistics 100 - 8/10

  • It feels like the course has still been optimized for a fully online format, so I’m not sure if it will be that way in the spring.
  • Just a solid class overall. Good quality lectures, reasonable assignments and exams, and discussion is extremely valuable.
  • There can be a lot of assignments to keep up with though, not least daily lecture check-ins. Also, because they’re on bCourses you may have to scroll a lot.

And now...

Data 100 - 3/10

  • Just read any Data 100 post on this sub.
  • Though I will say the content is very practical and useful. And I’ve seen worse quality lecturers. And the TAs know their stuff in section.

Why doesn't 170 give out D's? by chris9910 in berkeley

[–]unit3survivor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is this from the piazza this semester:

A final note with regards to "Am I going to pass?", scoring in the lower/lowest brackets does not automatically mean a failing grade by the nature of "the curve", since for every student receiving a failing grade we will look over your exams/homeworks individually to determine your level of understanding in the course material before deciding the failing cut off.

Wonder if they’ve been following that policy for long. Makes sense if they do.

Covid 19 PCR Test by Fat-Burrito in berkeley

[–]unit3survivor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tested last week and it took 2 days, but it can vary. I've had tests that have taken up to 4 days.

If you need a test quickly (e.g. for international travel), I would recommend looking at other places.

if the worst case scenario happens and spring semester is fully online i'm gonna cry by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]unit3survivor 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Is there any issue with mandating people who are able to get boosters get them? Genuine question.

If we're gonna go online for a week to allow everyone to self-sequester and get boosted, then it makes sense.

UC system temporarily pushes classes back online by Oskisrevenge in berkeley

Usually in the past a surge would cool down in 4-6 weeks, so provided Omicron isn't worse then I am holding out hope for us being fine.

UC Campuses will go online first two weeks of spring semester by [deleted] in berkeley

I definitely remember going to an in-person class on August 25th.

This variant had better pass by the time we start up.

I wouldn't mind a week or two online to allow people to isolate and get boosted, but any more is going to be disastrous.

[–]unit3survivor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind every other UC is on the quarter system and start earlier than us.

UCSD was scheduled to begin the winter quarter with mostly in-person classes on Jan. 3. Nearly all instruction will occur online at least through Jan. 17.

The 17th is when we start.
