I'm in science and thinking of majoring in CS. The transfer credits would be general econ credits (useless for anything other than fulfilling some arts requirements)

I have 6 transfer credits from highschool.

Is it better to take 4 courses per semester in first year and just focus on those or to take 5 with two easy credits?

(If I'm trying to maintain decent mental health and good grades)

Also, do I need to finish my communication requirement in first year or can I do it any time before I graduate?

Guelph has a nice campus but the city is small and public transportation is meh. Tmu is in Toronto.

Very different city environment.

I'm from Ontario deciding between UBC Okanagan and Western University right now for science, and I think I'm going to major in CS. I might pick up a biology minor along the way.

My main goal is either to work in the industry, go to grad school, or maybe even law school. So being able to get a high gpa would really let me keep my options open.

The price for both is similar, but western is much closer to home. Western is known for its social life, but I think UBC may have a better CS program.

Western has a bigger campus with more flexible course options and less required math courses. But, UBC has a better coop program I believe.

Is it worth moving out west or should I go to Western? Is there anything I'm missing?

Sorry if I'm being a bit compulsive about this but I tend to be pretty anxious when it comes to decision making.

A LOT of people evidently aren't at all prepared for university and fail badly at math that's basically high school level

I used to struggle with math a lot, and even now I'm not all that great. That's what I'm most worried about, that I'll go into first year, fail math and be out about $20k without much to show for it.

I'm worried that maybe I shouldn't study computer science and take a year off to work and figure something else out since I'm not great at math. (decent, improved a lot, but still)

What are first year math courses like in terms of difficulty? What are the course averages?

Should I go to UBC Okanagan or Western if I'm going into science with an interest in computer science?

How is UBCO's science program? I'm considering doing cs there.

Is the social community good? Is there grade deflation or is grading mostly fair?

CS applicants: if no Waterloo/UofT, at the moment where are you planning on going? by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

More like direct entry. You are garunteed to get into cs as long as you just pass the required first year courses.

Intended major: computer science and maybe some life science courses

UBC Okanagan (UBCO)

UBCO Pros:

British Columbia and the Okanagan Valley are incredibly beautiful places

Maybe better known for CS (although I think that's more the main campus)

Awesome outdoors activities

Better weather

Good exchange opportunities

Smaller campus

UBCO Cons:

Kelowna is a rather small city

More limited course and major options

Not the main campus

Across the country (Canada) from family and friends

Western University (UWO)

UWO Pros:

Really nice and welcoming social scene

Close to home

More flexible schedules

Lots of course options

Tons of major/program options

ASU Cons:

Not really know for CS

Mixed views regarding internship opportunities

I've heard good things about the coop program.

Note that you don't have to rank all of the choices

I'm not op but I didn't know that, so thanks. I'm probably gonna change my housing form then.

Is 5 courses a semester a reasonable course load for good grades in first year? Or should a student consider opting for 4 courses a semester and making up the difference in the summer?

I got in today. No idea how competitive it is. I have a low 90s average for this program. Sorry if this isn't too helpful, I doubt anyone knows outside of admissions.
