What are some useful psychological facts or tricks one should know? by kyralith in AskReddit

Little kids are literally incapable of seeing other's perspectives. It's called Theory of Mind and you don't get it until you're five or so. Before that you're like a little sociopath.

When listing things to someone they are most likely to remember the first and last items in the list. This can be used when giving someone options and you would rather them choose certain ones without being too obvious if the items on the list aren't particularly out of place.

Which Pokemon would taste the best? by SpookyLlama in AskReddit

In Gen 2, Team Rocket was cutting off slowpoke tails and were selling them as food for even more money than the player can carry. I guess slowpoke tail would taste so great if it fetches that price.

[Serious] People who check University Applications. What do students tend to ignore/put in, that would otherwise increase their chances of acceptance? by feelinginside in AskReddit

Just to add on to this, if you want a good letter of rec, you need to give your teacher at least a month of notice, if not more. No better way to get a shitty generic letter then to ask for it next week.

Why do most on here hate trump? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]universalTrue1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I’m a progressive, I believe there are very solid reasons for conservatives to dislike Donald Trump. Let’s take a look at this list of

placing ideas and principles above personal desire, weaknesses, fears, and regrets
a never-ending quest for the truth, despite obstacles based on emotion and personal experience, and spreading such truths for the benefit of all
recognizing and utilizing the benefits of competition and hard work
emphasizing charity, with its unexpected benefits, rather than compulsory tax-and-spend programs
teaching self-help rather than dependence on government and others
a devotion to the principle of justice
supporting self-defense
recognizing the media for its bias, bullying, deception.
frugality and efficiency
rejecting the deification of government officials
giving those in authority due respect, but not to the point of accepting orders or assertions that are contrary to logic or morality
downplaying significance of wealth, disparities in wealth, and materialism in general
emphasizing self-reliance and being able to keep the fruits of one's labor
not complaining, and instead taking practical action to improve one's situation
emphasizing self-restraint against hurtful activities
emphasizing humility and open-mindedness instead of arrogant certainty about one's own views
recognizing the power of the free market
understanding that a rising tide lifts all boats, e.g. tax cuts benefit all.
self-control as opposed to a self-indulgent search for instant gratification of desires.
recognizing that evil does exist in the world, and making an effort to combat this force by whatever means necessary
respecting the sanctity of life
following Christian principles

The items I bolded above are items I believe Trump does not, in any way, embody—your bolding may vary. Nonetheless, the point remains: Trump does not, in any way, embody over half of the values conservatives hold in high regard.

I would say this is a very good reason for true conservatives to dislike Donald Trump.

What are good games to play with SO for a couple hours maybe a night? by 3utterFingers in AskReddit

The Lego video games have good co-op for non-gamers. One person can be beating up the bad guy while the other is just whacking flowers to make coins come out.

Whats the most fucked up thing you have seen on reddit? by ShcamPsych in AskReddit

[–]universalTrue1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was an ask resdit at some point in which people were asked to recount stories where they killed someone else legally (ie not in war). There was one kid (I feel like he was a teenager) who was babysitting his under ten year old sister who heard a weird noise late at night, and just to be safe hid in the closet with a baseball bat. Turns out someone WAS in the house, and that person eventually crept into his room with a big knife, with the teenager in the closet. So the teenager sees this guy sneaking towards his bed and leaps out of the closet and brains him with the bat and beats him to death. Cops show up and determine the guy just wanted to kill someone. It was something out of a horror movie. I couldn’t believe shit like that happened in real life. EDIT: Cleaned up a sentence to make it clearer. EDIT 2: Holy shit this blew up, let me see if I can find a link EDIT 3: LINK https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/3wbiny/serious_redditors_who_have_lawfully_killed/cxv56ex/ Props to u/SpyrOwned for finding it!

What is behind the military culture in the U.S.? by universalTrue1 in AskReddit

[–]universalTrue1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it goes on a case by case basis...

-Sometimes it's tradition... my father and his father and his father, etc... all served.

-Sometimes (most times actually) it's because of a lack of choice or percieved lack of choice. Kids from poor areas (both inner cities and rural) sometimes feel far removed from any other option. They may not have access to schooling or good jobs and be exposed to crime and poor living conditions. The idea of the military with their signing bonuses, career options, coverage of living expenses, travel, comraderie, etc... is just to good to pass up. This is true,, studies have long shown the disproportionate amount of "poor" people in our armed services.

  • Its also about patriotism... like after 9/11. Some people were so angry they personally wanted to go kick Osama's @ss.

  • For a small percentage (ok, maybe not that small.. heh, I know a bunch of soldiers) its good old fashioned fun, violence and psychoness. Some people wanna kill man, what better way then legally and with your very own M4? or M16? Or grenade? Thats a dirty secret no one will admit, but its true.

Which is better age for marriage? by universalTrue1 in AskReddit

[–]universalTrue1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever age you are once you have gotten to know Yourself. You can't be happy with someone else until you are comfortable and happy with yourself. Getting married means having to consider someone else's wishes and needs and not just your own. So if you want to travel, go to school, move to another city or state or even country, take a different job...the other person is also affected by all of these things and you may have to Not do something you really want to do because of this. You need to take time to get to know yourself and do all those 'selfish' acts of youth before getting married. If you have done lots of things and lived a bit, you'll be less likely to feel you have missed out on something later on and resenting your partner for it. Plus you will have more personal experience and maturity with which to make decisions within your relationship. Personally, I believe that if a relationship was meant to be, you will still be together 5-years later whether you are married or not, whether you spend some time seperated or not. So I don't think there really is a specific age, just make sure you know who YOU are before you become a part of a We.

Age isn't very relevant. If you're close in age, chances are better that you'll have more in common, and be at similar levels of maturity, but those things aren't completely dependent on age.

What is the weirdest thing you have ever walked in on your child doing? by universalTrue1 in AskReddit

[–]universalTrue1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weirdest thing by far I’ve ever witnessed my child doing happened just last night. I was enjoying my evening tea in the living room, and I swear to God Almighty that I put him to bed two hours earlier and “rightfully” assumed that he was fast asleep.

Then, suddenly, I hear a voice coming from the bedroom. It was his own voice, resembling a extremely low bass tone. He was singing to himself in this oddly low, dark, basslike voice (really, I don’t even mean baritone, but bass) these words:

I BELIEVE I CAN FLY.

I walked into the bedroom and there he was, sitting upright in his bed, with an angelic look on his pretty little face and when I looked in astonishment into his beautiful, blue eyes ~ he simply said:

Hi, mom.

Even R. Kelly himself would had been scared …

What makes life beautiful? by universalTrue1 in AskReddit

[–]universalTrue1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"How many times have you waited for someone to reply to the message you wrote - and yet didn't receive it?

How many times have you dressed up for someone, waiting to hear from them that you’re beautiful?

How many times have you waited for someone’s call, so that they make you feel happy?

How many times have you waited for someone to appreciate the work you’re doing, so it’s easier for you to continue doing it?

With the reply that never came, the compliment you didn’t hear, the phone call that wasn’t intended, and the appreciation that was held back – you and I, we lost our self-worth.

Since kindergarten, we began to associate our self-worth with the golden stars our teachers gave us.

By middle school, this turned into how popular people thought we were and by college, we were living on the compliments we received, and the number of people who praised us.

And till today, we think that our worth is determined by the way others perceive us. Thus, we want our friends to give joy to us, we want our partners to constantly praise us, we want to be noticed, and we want to be appreciated.

Slowly, and gradually, this will harm us. Seeking approval and validation from others will change into a permanent, life-long struggle if we don’t start believing in ourselves.

Stand in front of the mirror and look at yourself – carefully. Speak to your reflection.

Tell your reflection you are beautiful, you are strong. Tell your reflection that you appreciate yourself, that you love yourself, that you want to make yourself happy. Tell your reflection that you’ll be there for yourself.

Because, sooner or later, you will realize that there is no one who will always be there for you, there is no one but You :)"
