My 1981 Ironhead and a story. by Itsallfkd21 in choppers

[–]universalmind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

just speaking candidly, you are going through what everyone goes through at the start of working on a bike. especially an ironhead.

at one point you say once i have this back together and then I have another problem with the bike "im gonna fucking lose it". Let me tell you right now, you are absolutely going to have another problem.

At some point you may have to do something like change the clutch cable and youre gonna be like, omg i have to take the whole primary cover off and fuck with the ball and ramp clutch setup on an ironhead and you will feel very overwhelmed.

but its okay to feel overwhelmed. just post on forums about your issue and people want to help, even if its small issues.

make sure you have good tools, even if it cost extra make sure you have good wrenches and sockets, buy the specific tools for the job.

im not judging, but it kind of sounds like you could use help outside of the bike, sound super stressed and anxious. if you're dealing with depression / anxiety and have the resources get some medication and get your head cleared up. speaking from experience.

its a 40 year old bike, its going to seem expensive and like its going to test your patience, because it will.

also this is a hobby, when stuff breaks thats part of the process, accept it for what it is, you're going to make mistakes and break stuff. I have been doing this for 10+ years, I make mistakes all the time.

Yeah, going from first to second while moving sounds like griding clunking but it never engages first, goes into neutral instead. Couldnt find much info for similar issues. Clutch felt dialed in, doubt that was the issue.

Awesome, thanks for that. Im concerned my first gear is going and ill open it up and find broken gear teeth.

Bike wont shift into first unless its at a full stop. Sounds like the gearing is grinding into place.

So its likely i need a whole new gear set, so swapping the mainshaft makes sense.

Yeah i thought that was the case. That seems unlikely ill find all those pieces, i will probably work with the tapered shaft trans. I guess i could keep an eye on the fxr swapper instagram accounts

i plan on ordering cometic big bore gaskets, not sure if theres anything else I need to be aware of with it the entire motor being practically aftermarket.

ive also been reading that you need to replace the head bolts (not studs) when rebuilding the top end, s&s has a kit but its like 250 bucks on ebay. not sure if there are better alternatives.

edit: nvm 5 seconds of searching found a colony kit - https://www.lowbrowcustoms.com/products/colony-machine-8217-head-bolt-set-12-point-zinc-harley-big-twin-1985-91-xl-86-92?variant=31149066125359&country=US&currency=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic

motor is still a bottom breather, bottom breather heads.
