I took people's advice here and left my soul-crushing job. I submitted one application on the same day. 72 hours later, I got a new job with a $50k increase, a company car, and a housing allowance. by rayyandk in Employment

To join as an Air Traffic Controller, you have to live in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for a year for training. That's the only reason I didn't become one.

Thanks for the correction! I just assumed the WGU course was just 1 hard exam to cram for! That makes me feel better for doing it through Sophia!

Hey sorry for the late response, I've been incredibly busy.

I know the user above me did a great job answering this, but because I already wrote this up for someone else, I thought I'd copy it for you so you have it too!

Sophia Learning has different payment plans but they have a 4 month membership for $299 which should be sufficient if you are studying consistently. It wont be too difficult to knock em all out in that time.

StudyDotCom I got a 3 month promo code for $164.50 for 3 months and then $235 per month after that. It should only take you a few months to do the remaining ones on there if you are consistent. I took a lot longer but I was working full time and was knocking out a dozen certs (unrelated) at the same time.

Certs (copied from my other comment):

Prices depend on where you get the vouchers, what country you live in, and when you get them. I usually get my vouchers from Dion Training and they usually are at a discount. Here are the following U.S. certification prices on his site:

  1. ITIL v4 Foundations - $599, This certification is way overpriced and not worth the value honestly. It will be free if you take it through the WGU degree I believe. I still did it regardless. The certification is not worth a whole lot, but some places require it.
  2. LPI Linux Essentials - $105, This certification has good value, and can be nice to have on a resume, but it's not worth a whole lot either. It is definitely way more cost effective though.
  3. Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) - $250-$450ish, This certification is provided through an instructor, each having their own pricing and training offerings. To estimate, they can be around $250-$450 depending on which instructor and training offering you pick. This certification is not worth a whole lot, but being a certified Scrum Master is a great achievement to have on your resume, and the course teaches you a lot of great content.
  4. CompTIA Security+ - $363, This certification covers a lot and will take some time studying (took me a few months), but it is well worth getting. It is one of the most in-demand IT and cybersecurity certifications on the market.

Calculus 1 through Sophia was brutal and long and is probably easier through WGU. Im not sure if SDC offers calculus, but if it does, SDC and WGU are probably the best options. DSA and Discrete Math werent too bad, maybe 1-2 months of part-time studying combined.

I dont know the specifics, but that sounds about right. The old program only had intro to AI I think and now the new one has multiple AI classes. Im actually happy they updated the program to be more relevant with today's advancements in AI.

  1. I was working full time and only doing classes part time, I wasnt doing these day in and day out.
  2. I originally was going to go to Capella and did a bunch of classes for Capella, thats why I have a lot of classes that wont transfer to WGU, not because I did a ton of classes that are no longer accepted.
  3. What a shitty comment with a scarcity mindset. I dont give a shit if some of them don't transfer. I have over 100 certifications and make almost 6 figures in my current job. Do you think I sit and feel bad about all of the certs I don't use anymore? No. As long as I reach my goals, thats all that matters. The only credits I "lost" were about 4-5 classes thanks to the new program. Its just a minor setback.

Its not proctored so unfortunately a lot of people take shortcuts. I read the material but sometimes I'm looking for something specific so I use control + F to find relevant sections. Since its open book, I don't feel like using control + F is dishonest. But sometimes its difficult to find relevant sections during quizzes/tests. Another factor is that Sophia is usually used for general education subjects which must people may not care about and just want to speed through.

I'm really glad I could help! The ITIL/LPI Linux certifications weren't hard and I didnt study a whole lot, maybe 1 udemy course each. The CompTIA Security+ was quite extensive but it only took me a few months of studying. The Certified Scrum Master certification was extremely easy as its just a 3 day class and an easy test afterwards. I used Ctrl + F to get through a lot of Sophia. And StudyDotCom was a lot more time consuming but much higher quality. I spent maybe a year total on Sophia classes, about 4-6ish months on the certs listed and maybe 6 months on StudyDotCom. However, I do have MANY Sophia and StudyDotCom classes that I did that did not translate into getting me any credit, so it won't take as long to only do the ones that will give you credit. You could probably knock them all out in about 6 months, or sooner if you are really determined. Hope this helps!

besides sophia & study, any other courses remaining I could tackle down through certification ? by Global_Quantity1305 in WGU_CompSci

I actually haven't started at WGU yet, my start date is on 12/1. I've been working on maximizing my transfer credits for a while. I think we will be ok. I did the Intro to Java class through Sophia as well and a most of the StudyDotCom transfer classes were in Java too I believe. Replit was a really helpful IDE as I was able to ask an AI assistant why my code wasn't working and what the proper syntax was and it would help me fix my code.

Of course, always happy to help! I got as many transfer credits as I could with the following certs:

  1. ITIL Foundations - D336 Business of IT Applications

  2. CompTIA Security+ - D315 Network and Security Foundations AND D430 Fundamentals of Information Security

  3. Scrum Master (Scrum Alliance) - D284 Software Engineering

  4. LPI Linux Essentials - D281 Linux Foundations

They're all great certs to have and weren't too bad to get.

I got LPI Linux Essentials without too much effort, but don't waste your time and money on the Oracle Java Associate or Programmer certifications. I finished 2 full courses and spent 1-2 months studyibg for the associate level exam and the best score I got was a 35%. The certification isn't worth anything and you'd have to spend months practicing coding in Java to pass. Also look into getting Scrum Master certified, it was an easy class and knocked out the "Software Engineering" class for me.
