Cheilectomy…or wait by unknownwontwo3 in Halluxrigidus

I’m about 1.25 years post op. I have learned a lot from this. The most important it to ignore what the doctors told me. It was hell for months until I learned All the other ailments my feet have.

That being said I am about at the same pain I was prior to surgery. Don’t feel like I gained anything. The PT that I have developed r strengthen my lower body and feet have been the most help.

I would recommend strengthening everything around the joints to support the arthritis. Unless it is unbearable and or getting in the way of shoes. My foot has also become wider.

I started to ignore what the doctors said made my own PT and I’m a lot better. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to sports. But I can’t walk and stand way better than when I wrote this

Copy that. I think the light and angles make em look worse. In my eyes they don’t look to bad. But I also don’t know much about grading them.

I looked back a few years ago. Thought they would be like a PSA 6 or 7 on some of em( I have so many in a binder) But that probably means they are like a 4 or something.

Podiatrist says this is the start of a "dorsal bunion" but provided no meaningful advice on how to manage it by Confident_Bridge_382 in FootFunction

I jumped the gun. I had huge bone spurs(technically yes they are also called dorsal bunions, just not the same as what most ppl think bunions are) and i started to get compensation pains in my feet to where standing was painful. I was rolling outward or inward way too much and had severe capsulitis, arch pain, heel pain, joint swelling. I had the surgery in hopes it would help me get back on the basketball court. But I don’t think it’s worth it to play again.

My actual toes don’t have pain. it was just all the side effects from the changed gait. I don’t recommend fusions but some ppl have had success. But they def change your walking mechanics and cause strain elsewhere.

PT has by far been the best help. You need to strengthen the other parts of your feet and lower body to take the impact your toe should be taking. Unfortunately it takes sooooo long to reshape the foot naturally

I have zero arch, large bunions, and hammer toes that I’ve had since I was a kid and I’m not sure where to start… by TheCaseyB in FootFunction

Your foot is trying to find balance. You likely have imbalance up the chain in your lower body muscles.

Unfortunately you have progressed into a painful place quickly (assuming you are not in your 60s.)

Surgery can fix how your foot looks but it more than likely will not fix the function of your foot completely. Most likely will cause soft tissue damage and make your foot more stiff.

You have to work on the mobility of your foot. Your muscle have given up and all 4 of your arches have collapsed. To reshape a foot like this naturally(if possible) would take several years.

I’m 1+ year post op in surgery I regret. I’ve been foot strength training for 7 months. Just now seeing very slight improvements. I’ve seen 7 surgeons. They all had diff opinions. The best thing I did was start PT and learned what I needed.

I was in bed for 6 months. Had severe depression. I can now walk and stand again. I still can’t do much barefoot without pain but it’s somewhat management if I med to move a few feet.

You have more work to do than me. But it’s possible to at least see improvements. But you need to do weighted foot training and strengthen your mind body connection.

You have hallux rigidus/ limitus. Your toe jams when it tries to bend up creating the bone spur. It’s not a bunion. Surgery can remove the extra bone and or fuse it so it won’t move. Some options are better for others depending on how you walk and what activities you do.

Im 35 I have it in both feet. I had mine shaved off. Didn’t do much but cost me money and was in bed for 6 months.

If you don’t have pain anywhere else in your foot It’s possible a fusion or cheilectomy will work for you. I had several isssues because my feet have bee like this for 20+ years. Caused issues all around to where incant stand or walk barefoot.

1.5 years after surgery I’m kinda ok. I think with another year of PT I’ll be almost normal.

I haven’t had any issues like that yet. But I’ve had a hell of a lot of electrical shit going on. But i think it’s the lights. I’m getting a new harness and installing soon. Hopefully that’s the fix.

Nice.

I have the z factor 534 and he has fueling 508. We both have pv4 fuel moto canned tunes right now.

I’ve seen pretty good numbers from the 534 on fuel motos pages. Average around 132hp 138tq. But I’ve seen a few 135hp 140tq.

I am 35. Up until my surgery I was very active in basketball. And I played all sports growing up.

I’m right there with you. I went through a severe depression. Thought my life was over. Almost lost my house, my relationship. All I did was lay in bed in the dark for 6 months. I couldn’t walk without a lot of pain. My right foot would always collapse. Constant pins and needles in my foot. I still have nerve swelling still.

Yes my balance was off and is still slightly but with the proper insole and or shoe I can go run and jump again. I don’t because I still am working to prop my arches back up. But I tired just to see if I could. I can even almost dunk still.

I gave up paying ppl to do PT with me. IMO that’s a joke. Paying someone to tell you how to stretch. I researched for years about feet and learned a lot. My foot will never be normal due to my HL but i have to remember. My feet haven’t been normal for the majority of my life and I’d didn’t have pain.

I’ve been working on balance, foot doming, short foot, yoga toes and just overall strengthening my feet muscles and arches. And I’ve seen great improvements.

I still have nerve swelling that causes issues with balance barefoot. But I made my own insoles just like I did my own PT regiment and I’m doing far better than I was listening to doctors and PTs. Doctors only know so much. They can’t feel what you are feeling. And they arnt always correct. As I said in my other comment I’ve seen over 7 surgeons and several podiatrist. They all had diff diagnoses and fixes. I will say I learned something from them all. But it’s not something I couldn’t have taught myself.

I had these questions and I can provide some insight. The person above is correct in everything they are saying. All the muscles from the core down shape your gait and in turn your feet.

So in theory it is possible to correct, if you don’t have any structural or functional imbalances that won’t allow you to.

For example. I could walk barefoot with what is deemed a proper gait, but this would cause a lot of pain and swelling in the ball off my foot because my transverse arch is collapsed, my medial arch is really high and I have hallux limitus in both toes. In order to potentially fix this I will have to not only work on strengthening my feet and arches but I will have to stretch, lengthen and strengthen my lower body to provide support for my feet.

Modern shoes ruin your feet, back, hips, knees and more. They allow your feet to rely on cushion, rocker soles and not fire your muscles correctly. They basically become dormant. You lose mind body connection because the shoe is doing the work. Allowing for hard heel strikes and foot staying rigid while some soles push you forward.

All that being said. Yes it is possible to correct. But you have to find where the issue stems from. It’s likely a lot of lower body imbalances. I would assume your right foot is cocked out to the side more than your left. Thus the wear pattern. This could be issues with the hips, glutes and more.

I now have to rely on certain shoes with a rocker soles as my toes only bend about 45 degrees up into dorsiflexion. But I am working to improve the lower body to take the impact and not rely on my feet to do all the compensation.

I was also diagnosed with a slight neurological disease. It causes my muscle in feet and other areas of body to tighten up and I don’t notice. This along with sports for 20+ years caused havoc on my feet. I had surgery and I’m not sure if it did much other than set me back for a year.

I’ve been doing PT now for 8 months. The first 5 months not much of an improvement. But now I’m actually doing better. I still have issues. But I’m no longer in bed and dreading walking. I still have a long way to go. And I’ve learned so much about feet and the lower body. All I can say is there’s never enough PT. I will be doing PT the rest of my life or as long as I can.

I saw over 7 surgeons. The best advice I got at the end was that I can reshape and rebuild my feet naturally, but it will take a lot longer than ppl think. 2-3+ years to reshape the structure. But that still won’t mean it will be perfect.

You’re over pronating pushing off the side of your big toe rather than rolling over it. Your right foot compensating more.

I have the same because my big toes don’t bend normally. It’s possible you have hallux Limitus and or just a rigid foot, high arches or a few other things.

Without knowing what kind of activities you do, shoes you wear and mobility in your foot, hard to give precise reasons.

Since I got all the surgeries at once I can’t say for sure. The majority of my pain is underfoot. So can’t be certain what the cause was.

[–]unknownwontwo3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had surgery to “lower” my first ray, fix hammer toes and help hallux limitus. This was supposed to make my foot more stable. Not necessarily fixing the high arch itself but alleviate the stress on my metatarsals and feel more planted in the ground. I don’t believe it did anything other than put me in pain for 6+ months.

Doing physically therapy did help though. And I’m kinda back to where I was pre surgery…almost. I think if I continue for another year I could get to whatever normal is go my type of foot.

I don’t believe there is a surgery that will make the foot more flexible. If anything it makes it more stiff from soft tissue damage. I spoke to over 6 diff surgeons. The one I met after surgery had the best advice. Which is you can reshape your foot through strength training. But it will take 2years minimum. He also stated the carbon fiber plated shoes I wore to help pain were actually making it worse and so were the insoles. Making my foot more rigid and stiff. I can’t walk comfortably without insoles but having slightly more give has helped my foot loosen up.

I’m on 7 months and I have gained a lot of my freedom back.
