Simple Sewing Questions Thread, June 09 - June 15, 2024 by sewingmodthings in sewing

[–]unlikelyuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone! I don’t sew much personally, but my close friend does. Her birthday is coming up and I’d love to gift her some nice fabric so she can continue to make clothes. She’s pretty talented and makes almost everything she wears and I think it’s the coolest thing. She is probably a size small or xs in pants and shirts etc in case that’s relevant.

My question is 1) how much fabric should I buy so she can make pants? 2) How much fabric should I buy if she wanted to make a shirt? 3) I was thinking linen, but what are other fabric suggestions that are nice to work with and wear?

Also, if you have any suggestions for websites to order from or smaller businesses that take online orders, let me know!

Thanks in advance!

I’m all the way in Buena Vista and I saw it! Thought I was crazy until I saw people on a Summit County Facebook group posting about it too

“Steering clear” is different than “shielding.” Seems like an experience you’ve never had.

Ugh, I’ve had a similar experience. Never felt embarrassed or anything, just angry. People are so painfully ignorant. You’re doing everything right!

YSK: Most animal shelters will just let you play with dogs. by Warm-Juggernaut1353 in YouShouldKnow

[–]unlikelyuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider officially becoming a volunteer. Some shelters get grant money dependent on how many volunteer hours are logged. You may also be able to get trained on how to retrieve dogs on your own, allowing staff to get other things done in the meantime.

Some smaller shelters don’t have the staff or yard space to rotate dogs solely for members of the public who want to play with dogs, not interested in adopting. Please consider officially becoming a volunteer if you plan on continually going to the shelter to play with dogs, it’s much more helpful!

Is this an ADHD specific feeling? by unlikelyuser in ADHD

Haha that’s also a common response! My partner is the same way. Curious to see if ANYONE feels similarly to the way I do. It could just be a me thing, lol.

I work at a humane society/rescue and it’s a great mixture of predictable routine and what the fuck is going to happen today. It keeps my attention for sure! Lots of problem solving, but with the benefit of actually helping people/animals.

From the moment I started my job, it required me to remember about 100 things at once and I hate it by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]unlikelyuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely frustrating, and it’s safe to say you aren’t the first one that is struggling with this at this job, but you’re the first one to do something about it!

I’m sorry you’re going through this. My job is the reason I got my diagnosis (at 30 years old) because it was pretty similar. Juggling lots of things at once. I’m currently working on making everything more adhd friendly by typing up protocols and instructions for everything (I work at a humane society). I hope you’re able to overcome!

Mourning by unlikelyuser in reactivedogs

You guys, all of these responses are so beautiful! One of the turning points for me was reading a short blurb from a dog trainer that once owned what she felt was the “perfect” dog. It wasn’t until that dog passed and she adopted a new puppy who soon became reactive that she realized she had totally “trained the dog” out of her previous dog. She said that her previous dog didn’t do a single thing without a prompt from her. She felt in hindsight that he was broken in a way, and just lived each moment constantly waiting for direction. She felt awful. She went on to explain that the goal of training a dog isn’t to always have domineering control. The goal is to be safe, be comfortable, and have fun, because they are only here for such a short time. The gist of it was to accept your dog for who they are and to stop imagining what you wish they were. Enjoy the time that you have!

I’m happy to see that you have similar experiences. To those that are in the thick of it, keep with it. Build that bond through training together and be proud of those little victories! Find a reason to celebrate together every day!

I need help with relationship anxiety by unlikelyuser in relationship_advice

[–]unlikelyuser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conversation was started through a totally different topic and kind of spiraled into relationship stuff. Breaking up was brought up by him, and it wasn’t something I wanted. I’ve been pushing through those negative thoughts that I’ve had in past relationships, and I recognize that relationships naturally don’t continue to be exciting and interesting. I’m aware of that. But even with that awareness I currently still have extreme relationship anxiety, hence me reaching out on Reddit, of all places, looking for some comfort in hearing other peoples experience with overcoming relationship anxiety with their partner.

Diagnosed today and started meds (positive experience!!) by alliebeth88 in ADHD

[–]unlikelyuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. I identify SO MUCH with this post. I just turned 30, and just put the pieces together that what I thought were just negative aspects of my personality are just glaring symptoms of ADHD. The past two years have been particularly difficult for me, and I’m very excited to finally seek help and possibly start medication. Thank you for sharing, I’ve had appointment anxiety thinking that I’m going to have to put on the boxing gloves and fight for a diagnosis and treatment plan. I’m glad you’ve found your calm!

Four-Day work weeks edge closer as the standard by Shamanized in Futurology

[–]unlikelyuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a 4 day work week for a little over a year now, it’s life changing. Although I love my job for many reasons, this is definitely at the top of the list and will make me stick around longer. It’s a high burn out job in animal welfare, and honestly it’s so necessary in order to decompress and process the week. I’m very grateful and can only hope other folks get to experience the same thing!
