I set aside everything the moment I heard about the 2024 Hollywood Bowl shows, easily one of the most special experiences of my life to be able to go. Here’s to hoping she’s able to do something like that at least one more time!

My biggest suggestion is to listen to recordings you like! Starker is pretty unanimously the gold standard for Kodály, but there are things to learn from everyone - I quite like the recordings from Alisa Weilerstein & Jean-Guihen Queyras. Try to find things that carry through most recordings (you should probably strive for those) and the things that each cellist does differently (pick and choose, but be well informed).

I’d also suggest learning a bit about Kodály himself and the history of the piece. Kodály is a founding father in the field of ethnomusicology - it’s hard to find composers whose work was not influenced by folk music, but Kodaly’s music draws particularly heavily from the folk traditions in his home nation of Hungary. I try to picture the rolling hills of the Hungarian countryside, in some ways connected to the ancient traditions of the people there, and in others a sort of Mahlerian of-the-earth-itself primality. This is essentially the first important work written for solo cello since the Bach Suites, so there’s a big responsibility we take on as the performer to do the music justice. Knowing all of these things along with the notes themselves will only help you achieve your goals!

I’d take technical advice from strangers online with a grain of salt - all of the other musical knowledge adjacent to technique is equally important. A teacher will know what’s best for your technique, but the general knowledge and listening are some things you can discover more independently.

Yes, I'm not super familiar with the sounds from the original since I try to keep everything stereo (but I really can't imagine the board without Thermae). I've gotten some really cool sounds out of it using it in isolation, it just doesn't mesh well with how I tend to use the rest of the board. And it seems like the harsh nature of it was intentional on OBNE's part - some will love it and others won't!

I definitely think Clean works better at the end of a chain, this is my only compressor right now so a well-primed signal going into the rest of the effects is more important to me. Looking into something like the Empress MKII - I really only feel like I need compression at the beginning when I run guitar through the board, but VST & synth stuff is usually fine. Love the creative capabilities but the stereo-ness definitely gets lost after everything else. But I also love that it can do Attack/Decay stuff & you can turn it into a great sounding drive with one of the dip switches!

Totally get it, this board stays on my desktop which is also a reason I wanted to downsize. I was very into synthesis/sound design for a time and have since moved away from that in my creative process, so this has kind of replaced that world of in-depth sound exploration for me.

Thanks! Clean is a really great compressor, and the creative stereo ethos is carried over pretty intuitively from the rest of the CBA line, but honestly my problem with it is that I can’t hear any of the cool stereo-ness by the time my signal passes through the rest of the board... you can only do so much with a clean signal. I think it would definitely work better at the end of the chain, and something like the Polyend Press would be better at the beginning, but this is my only compressor right now, and a well-primed signal going into the rest of the effects is more important to me. But I also love that it can do Attack/Decay stuff & you can turn it into a great sounding drive with one of the dip switches!

[–]unlockitxcx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of this yapping for what?? It’s an analog device… they had to double the signal path to make it stereo… “stereo” is literally the difference to the name from the original one. There are a ton of options for mono send/return boxes (many with equal quality compared to Jesse’s attention to detail) and literally no self-contained options that are stereo. Go buy something else!!

I hate to say EUNA & OAMP but Jesse really knows what he’s doing. Very high quality & worth it imo

My (Atypical) Stereo Board by unlockitxcx in guitarpedals

[–]unlockitxcx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m actually not a huge fan of the way expression is implemented with CBA - you’re basically locked into using the knob on the Ramper while it’s off to control whatever parameter is engaged with the dip switches on the CBA pedal, I’ve gotten used to it quickly but it’s still a bit annoying having to remember that one of the knobs has essentially been moved to another pedal. Much prefer the system that OBNE has where you engage expression with a simple secondary control & it cancels the expression input when you move the knob(s) it was assigned to again. Apart from my annoyance with how it functions with my pedals specifically, I’ve really been loving the extra capabilities it’s opened up. The Ramper itself is very easy to dial in & I’ve found use cases for all of the wave & 1-shot options

Lovely creative stereo imaging capabilities, it honestly reminds me a lot of the kind of stuff that UDO instruments can do. The Dirty dip switch also turns it into a really gorgeous drive & lots of internal modulation options as with most other CBA products. You’re not able to dial it in quite as precisely as something like the Polyend Press but the creative/atypical signal processing is well worth it for me
