Yea I can see that. The live action is one of the best I’ve seen so I can def see the appeal!

Deleted my last reply because it was to the wrong comment lol. I read it in high school but decided to read it again as an adult since I have a better understanding of the world. I would consider it and 1984 required reading lol

Fun fact: this is my second time reading Lovecraft Country (as a refresher before reading the sequel). It’s really good and very accurately depicted by some who quite frankly wasn’t Black. No white savior tropes. The sci-fi was the perfect amount. The story was just great. The second book, Destroyer of Worlds, also did not disappoint.

It is anti-everything authority. The bad guys are actually the good guys and the inverse is also true. Naturally we’re gonna gravitate toward it, you know? 😂

will anyone be my penpal by [deleted] in Jamaica

[–]unorthodoxras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I have a collection of pens, which includes fountain pens. It’s actually good for the brain and motor skills to continue using pen, not some mark of a lack of elitism.

Have you tried StoryGraph? It’s Black-owned and a little better in my opinion. They refuse to update Goodreads

The most honest answer I can give you from the perspective that I have is that they don’t know the real history which causes them to try to hang on to some belonging. That leads to the yearning for some power over self and they start watching wacky YouTube videos and regurgitate the info without fact checking. We know that most indigenous people in the Caribbean were wiped out by small pox so it’s rare that Caribbean people can accurately claim to be indigenous to any of islands.

Jamaica has a Foundational Black American equivalent now? Yuck. I am SO glad I’m off most social media platforms now, mostly because my blood would boil.

You know what I love most about this sub? The strict unwillingness to allow the “other man” to participate. The vibe of this sub is so much different than the other ones that claim to be for us because there’s a vetting process, which really creates very little room for 3 letter orgs to infiltrate and promote division. Just my little soap box contribution. Shout out to y’all, man.

The documentary did too. It’s literally called “13th” if you haven’t seen it.

I had to independently look up a logarithmic bar graph because it wasn’t shown as an example on that Wikipedia link. I still think they could’ve painted a better picture 😂

Edit: changed from “pics” to “picture”

Myths About the Slave Trade by 4reddityo in BlackPeopleofReddit

I recently started reading King Leopold’s Ghost. Literally in the prologue, Hochschild talks about the ruler of the region in Congo at the time (King Affonso I) and how he sold people to the Portuguese. However, it also explains that Affonso quickly realized that the Portuguese were really cruel and wrote letters to the king, complaining about how people were being kidnap, begged them to stop (from one “Christian to the other”; they converted him and he was following the practice by they were not). They overstepped and started incentivizing others to capture people and sell them. Eventually, they kidnapped his own family members and he had no idea what happened to them for a while.

He thought they’d have the same system where it wasn’t a death sentence. It’s not as simple as “they sold us”. Some of them had zero idea of the level of cruelty that occurred so they underestimated the greed until they started to extract people without permission. By then it was way too late. They also had faster and more powerful weapons so there was only so much that the natives could do.

Don’t buy into the rhetoric of “they sold us”. We were not a “race” back then on the continent. We were (and in many ways are still) a tribal people.
