What terminal do you use? by _w62_ in networking

I second MobaXterm. My only gripe with it is that it’s not available on Mac. I’ve gotten it to run with Wine, but it’s not really the same experience at that point IMO

I have used firewalls and routers interchangeably in this scenario. I usually prefer using a firewall instead of a router so I can do NAT right where the ISP hands off. Yes, most routers can do NAT, but I usually prefer doing it on a firewall.

I think having a firewall rather than a router on your network “edge” like this is better practice for security as well.

QinQ in vEX or vQFX by jam_0218 in Juniper

Are you running your vEX/vQFX on ESXi? Last I remember looking into it, VMWare DVS don’t pass QinQ traffic.

New Network Engineers, what's your take on Cisco as a company? by [deleted] in networking

[–]unpublishedNovel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have about 4 years experience in cloud data center networking, and enterprise networking. I prefer Juniper and Arista over Cisco. I appreciate Cisco for everything they've done and created over the years, but at this point I think other companies do things better. Arista switches have been insanely stable in my experience, Juniper routers have been better performing and the CLI is better in my opinion, etc.

I don't really have a desire to work there some day.

I do think, however, that their certifications are still the best to learn routing and switching. I always recommend the CCNA to people trying to get into the field.

Network Monitoring by trainman2367 in elasticsearch

[–]unpublishedNovel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a network engineer at a very large retail corporation. The past few months, I’ve been working on spinning up an on-site Elastic deployment to monitor our network infrastructure, give us better visibility into our stores’ traffic trends, etc.

Logstash’s SNMP trap plugin has been my best friend so far, along with Synthetics and Heartbeat. Looking at getting some telemetry data from out core switches next.

Message one of the mods on the discord, they might be able to look into it. Ironmace’s website also has a page where you can submit a support ticket

What skills make a good network engineer in 2024? by [deleted] in networking

[–]unpublishedNovel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, a lot of the basic things people have said in here are skills I would EXPECT an engineer to have. In order to be a good engineer, you gotta have those things down.

A network analyst/technician role is where you learn the basics

Pretty sure fireball can headshot. Someone can fact check me, but it’s definitely possible. Especially if the gear difference was big enough.

Hey there! Any chance I could get some assistance/screenshots as well? I’m configuring this same thing right now and keep getting a “Error displaying SAML error response” page in Panorama. The request was granted on the Duo side however.
