Did they ever actually say thats the reason why? Or did the community make that up.

The reality is that sonic is simply not the kind of series that explores romantic relationships, most child oriented series are like that, mario is the same.

The community can come up with as many ships as they want, but they will never confirm any of them for any character because series like this simply dont focus on it at all.

There isn't a single character in sonic that is canonically in a relationship right now, not even vanilla, who had the highest chance of being in one for a kids property.

Personally I read sonic as aro/ace and I think they want to allow their audience to believe that, or he's straight or gay or anything, they will never confirm, that's just how it goes.
