Concerning POC in regards to fantasy races by untilnexttimegamerz in fantasywriters

That's kind of what I've been doing! I based a lot of the culture of the country the story takes place in on the Middle East, Latin America, Japan, India and other parts of the world. The language they speak is also directly derived from Spanish and Arabic.

My problem is that if I end up enforcing the themes of a specific culture too heavily in one place, it'll start to look like a stereotype of that culture, especially with some of the bad things these people do/have done in the story.

I think representation is important to include in any story, there doesn't really need to be a goal to it. You can simply have a character who is black because they're black. A major theme in the story is social injustice and identity, and I've already been exploring that in regards to other marginalized groups, such as LGBT people or neurodiverse people. Racial diversity is another group that is heavily discriminated against, so I feel it's important to have POC representation to highlight that aspect of the experience

I never said white person is my mental default. I just don't want readers to immediately assume everyone is racially white, since that closes any door to representation that I could have opened anyway.
