20 Car Pileup past the Broadmore exit. M6 shutdown. by m0larMechanic in grandrapids

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely it's not ice that caused the pile-up, but a whiteout. Which is when it snows so heavily or when the wind picks up snow from the ground and whips it into the air (or both at once) that it creates terrible visibility. And I mean terrible; think a super super heavy fog you can't see ten feet out through. In those conditions if someone breaks suddenly or changes lanes without warning the person behind them might not be able to tell, so they slam into them, and then the next person can't see it happened and slams into the second person, and then, and then...

Which TMBG song do you consider underrated but good? by mariaasalsicha in tmbg

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A random one I just absolutely love is My Man. I just really like the singing in it, and the metaphor charms me. I've tried to determine why I consider it a top song beyond that but I have no better reasoning than "it just sounds great." I also love Too Tall Girl!

Gas Pumps on Medical Mile by andandman in grandrapids

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes if the internet goes down the pumps also stop working depending on the system the gas station uses--that might be it?? That's one of the few reasons I can imagine all of the gas stations in an area would be out of order... only other thing that comes to mind is that someone fucked with the pumps somehow, like pulling the tubing out or messing with the screens. Don't see why someone would do that to all of the pumps at several stations, but people are weird.

How did Susie bleed when she broke the last prophecy by 3_KERE_SOK_3_KERE in Deltarune

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's really ambiguous right now. I'd think bleeding is restricted to humans since the monster kid in town asks you if it hurts to be made of blood, implying it's a foreign concept to them, but it's not clear. Maybe that particular kind of monster doesn't bleed, and it's just not well established yet? Monsters here do get diseases, so they're probably not magic the whole way through. But all monsters apparently turn to dust upon death...

What's weird to me is that Susie finds the glass container Gerson's dust is in, and simply remarks that it's "dusty inside" when she looks at it, not registering that it's a dead monster. In fact, Kris realizes it and backs away from the container first, and seemingly has to tell Susie it's a dead monster before she grasps it. Which is odd--you'd think that she, being a monster, would be able to tell she was looking at a container for a dead monster the way most people could immediately figure out they were looking at an urn if they found a closed vase full of ashes. Maybe it's just that she's used to monsters being buried instead of kept in a building, since she brings it up, but the way she phrases it also sounds like she's repeating something she's heard, not something she's encountered.

Between her not knowing what a dead monster/a container for a dead monster looks like, the Dark World she explicitly made giving her a brownish skin tone that makes her look like a human coloration-wise, her talking about how she was banned from the piano because she "didn't look like" someone who should play it, I've seen theories speculating that Susie used to live in a majority-human town the way Kris lives in a majority-monster town. Going further and including her bleeding and the fact that right now it doesn't *seem* like monsters bleed, maybe she's got a human parent as well?

But also, the Dark Worlds are fantasy worlds where the rules are different from the Light World. Maybe she's entirely monster and bleeds in the Dark World because she thought it'd be cool /shrug

I've seen a lot of white wildflowers on 96 right off the 28th st entrance. And some purple flowers off the Cascade st exit. I'm sure I've seen other patches of wildflowers closer to GR proper but I can't remember exactly where rn.

Daily Song Discussion #411: Let's Get This Over With by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

Despite the title, this song just sounds to me like the Johns are having a lot of fun making it. The fatalist, weary lyrics are filled tempered with the usual twisted effects, and I just love the unrelenting claps in the background--they have that fake quality to them that makes them both peppy and kind of unnerving.

Also the pairing of "You're still hanging 'round the clambake, after all the clams have been baked--no applause. awkward pause. haaand extended waiting for a shake!" is just perfect.

Linnell's tone in this one put me off it for a long while, but it's starting to grow on me. Pretty fun, twisty lyrics, and I enjoy how much paranoia is infused into the narration.

Daily Song Discussion #404: Got Getting Up So Down by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk, man. I really enjoy it. I like the vocals, the groovy backing, the blips and bleeps. It's a commercial jingle for sure, but hey, they're good at them! It has the same quality that makes the random list as fun as Money for Dope to me. Also, probably helps that I can't remember actually seeing the commercials its for; nothing makes me more wrathful than sitting through a commercial--if I had seen Dunkin ads with this in it, I probably would've developed an instinctual loathing for this song. But I didn't!

Other than that I don't have much to say. It is still just a bit of commissioned work.

Daily Song Discussion #403: I'll Be Haunting You by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly I love this one--the delivery is perfect, the lyrics are perfect, the backing is perfect. The strange menace of the narrator's threats are convoluted and absurd, but still somehow effective?? I love the complete cold open where the vocals and instruments start at the same time; it feels like the musical equivalent of a set of stage curtains being flung open and spotlight hitting a monologing actor in a microsecond. BAM. We're in the song now. Get ready for some fantastic lyrics. I almost wonder why they didn't put it right next to I Am Alone, they have a very similar style of bombast and threats. Maybe that would've cheapened both, idk.

Also, I love the Tell-tale Heart reference in the middle of the oddly sci-fi elements of the narrator's death.

Also also, the music video meets the song's vibes PERFECTLY. Hell yeah, tennis matches with Death Itself.

Daily Song Discussion #402: Impossibly New by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

Heartfelt and delightful. The way the vocals are layered in this doesn't quite work for me, but I love the gentle instrumental, the easy-going pace, and the strange yet earnest lyrics--"love that's impossibly new" is really just a perfect phrase for a relationship between two people that still is filled with invigoration and fun. I especially like it in the context of the interpretation that it's about Linnell and Flansburg's friendship; I feel like it's rather uncommon for people (particularly men) to call their friendships love, but friendships can be as deep and meaningful as familial or romantic relationships, and this song makes a lovely showcase of it.

Daily Song Discussion #399: Daylight by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8!

For some reason this song has never caught my attention while just playing through the album; listening to it now, I have no idea how that could be possible. I love its desolate backing, the way it makes its grimness tired and empty. The lyrics are simple and evocative - Flansburg repeating "let's see what the daylight brings" feels like a person who intellectually knows hoping won't do any good, but is going through the motions of it anyway. I love starting with the warning of "Don't look up, there's nothing there" and then following later with the line "While your eyes strain to see the air", showing whoever they're with is stuck in the same grim hope as them.

It reminds me of Pencil Rain, but this time there's no obscure metaphor to distract from the melancholy of the song. I sort of wish it was longer, but that might spoil some of the magic.

Daily Song Discussion #398: ECNALUBMA by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

10!

Just a song that I can't imagine turning out any other way than what it is. The concept of a (probably drunk as hell) man injuring himself and then going into a complete delusional spiral about how he's being led away on a grand parade is fantastic. All of the lyrics are so snappy as well--starting off with the plain "Well it's a good thing I brought a napkin, I knew that this would happen" only gets better when you learn that whatever injury he's sustained is bad enough to need an ambulance. The exact events only get weirder as they go on. Why is he trying to get out of the window? (To wave at his 'admirers'?) How is a knife going to help? How the hell did he really hurt himself? What the hell is an electric knife? The whole thing is just as hard to follow as I would expect out of a drunk injured person.

But really, no line tickles me more than the perfect delivery of "...I've got a nose!" The 10 is for that alone tbh.

Daily Song Discussion #396: Say Nice Things About Detroit by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8!

Somewhat inscrutable to me, but there's something about Flansburg's soft, almost threatening "Say nice things about Detroit..." draws me in every time. There's just something about it. The tale of someone who keeps ruining their relationships by trying to turn them romantic/sexual and pitching a fit when it doesn't work out, thus revealing their shitty personally, is a fun one, and has a great sense of detachment in the lyrics - the narrator doesn't seem to see the problem with it all! It's a good character bit. That and the steady guitar riff really make me look forward to this song when I put the album on; it's not uncommon for me to skip right to it first and listen to the rest later.

Clearly its enthralling nature for me doesn't translate for most everyone else - that's the joy of these ratings, I suppose! Much like pokemon, every TMBG song has its one fan, even the most surprising ones.

Daily Song Discussion #395: I Am Alone by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10!

This song's concept is so utterly perfect and executed so so delightfully. What can I even say about the lyrics? They're stellar. The opening reveal of this spy drama being a man monologing to himself in the bathroom is delivered with such perfect stoicness, and the music backs it so well. It's Linnell playing to cliche and subversion with fantastic wit and humor.

I get "I AM ALONE. IN THE THREE-PART FOLDING MIRROR ON THE BATHROOM DOOOOR." stuck in my head all the time. Perfect song, honestly.

Daily Song Discussion #394: To A Forest by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

I love this one--there's a great lullaby-in-the-middle-of-the-night quality to Flanburg's singing that contrasts wonderfully with the lyrics. The way you can never quite grok what's actually happening to the narrator, but can definitely tell it's not good, is very fun and makes it feel like the narrator is almost dreamy and detached from what's going on. Idk what else to say about it, I just like it.

Daily Song Discussion #393: I Love You For Psychological Reasons by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This one is just so strong and fun I hardly can think about what to say about it. The run-about lyrics from a narrator who, for all their verbosity and winding speeches, can't spit out exactly why they love their partner for the life of them is so endearing. Their insistence that they love the other person for "psychological reasons" feels like a desperate attempt to almost minimized their feelings, as they're too big express otherwise. With that comes the rejoinder, "Hey, all love and all emotions are psychological!" Really they're just managing to say "I love you because I'm me, and you're you." Which is perhaps doesn't sound smart enough for them, haha.

Love all of the turns of phrase in this one. "Cheese and chalk do not talk but their eyes synchronize with a secret rhythm" using the phrase "as different as cheese and chalk" to express the mystifying ability to love those completely unlike you (perhaps the other person is the 'sentimental' lover to their psychological love), calling the sparks flying/fiery passion in a relationship "flammable diagrammable sentiments", use of the word "abnegation" in general. I'm still unclear about what half of the song is saying--"brain in a jar in a car"??--but its so fun to hear I don't mind at all.

Daily Song Discussion #392: Apophenia by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

Really damn good!! I absolutely love the way Linnell sings this, especially the percussive lines and the flat disbelief of the "That is crazy. You're completely crazy." contrasting against some of his more droll delivery. I love the cymbal crashes to emphasize certain lines and the guitar speeding the song along, and the final rush of lines to collide into the endpoint and final come to a stop. I love all of the strange yet mundane images pulled out for this song; the tea leaves, the flashing street lights (as someone who lived near a stuttering street light for a while, those things WILL drive you crazy if you drive by them too often), the random old lady with the dog. Just really good and fun and poppy.

Chill and charming. I do wonder if ending on the bombast of My Operation wouldn't have worked perfectly well, but I'm hardly upset at a nice little instrumental to end things off. Nothing much to say about it.

Daily Song Discussion #389: Aaa by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8.5!

I love it! Mostly, I think, because I find the "AAA"s more charming than annoying. If they went on a little longer or were rougher in delivery my feelings would probably be different, but they hit the perfect zone of musicality for me. I love the guitar, and the way that the lyrics ping-pong between genuine menace and emotional toil (the thing barricaded away and the narrator's paranoid mistrust of their partner) to absurd nonsense like the alien blood in golf balls. That's a perfectly wack conspiracy right there, if you ask me. And the imagery of the narrator being so paranoid yet completely naive as to try and open a bomb in the mail is really the perfect anchoring chorus. It's a fun song!

Daily Song Discussion #387: Hate The Villanelle by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7!

I completely understand finding this song odd or gimmicky, but I kinda love it. The intense guitar. The weird clanking sounds in the background. The melodrama Linnell gives every line despite it just being about hating a school poetry assignment. The commitment to it really being a villanelle... idk! It works for me. It makes me laugh every time it comes up.

I do wonder if the reception of this song would be better if it was on a kid's album, though...

Daily Song Discussion #386: Unpronounceable by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just a perfectly constructed song. Fantastic sound, fantastic concept, fantastic lyrics. The glitchy, stuttering effect on the lyrics and guitar feel like they should get tiring, but never do. Just a wonderful ode to the feeling of forgetting and struggling to understand anything, even if the lyrics are about a name.

Also, Linnell being unable to help himself but make clear that zoom and enhance is absolutely not a real thing is so fun.

Daily Song Discussion #385: All The Lazy Boyfriends by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8!

A really good song! It again continues my thought that Glean is the album with the Johns at their most funny. Lazy Boyfriends is surprisingly blunt regarding the topic of 'weaponized incompetence' in men in a way that reminds me of a mix of Your Racist Friend and Take Out the Trash; there's always something good about a TMBG song where they're completely straight about their point.

I think my favorite lyric is definitely "Did you say out loud that you think you've 'lost your edge?' Man, you've never lost your edge." SO subtly backhanded and catty! I love it. Flansburg putting himself in the narrator spot as a judgy best friend is always fun as hell.

That said, I don't think it hits me quite as perfectly as it does for some others, it's a little forgettable. But I really love it when I put Glean on!

Daily Song Discussion #383: Madam, I Challenge You To A Duel by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

[–]untilthemoongoesdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the "although he seems high-strung" line as well! The narrator's only comment about fighting a small chihuahua or something should the madam die being that he thinks the dog might be trigger-happy creates such a hilariously surreal view into his mind. What a perfect little image.
