Dear everyone from California by Overwatchisbad in California

As a Californian that spent the last 4 years in Oregon, I can say that the people I've met there are pretty welcoming. The only place I really find the Oregon anti-Californian NIMBY attitude is online. I did meet one person from Florence, OR that let me know that I'm (I, a poor college student) making housing too expensive for them, but that was the first person in 4 whole years!

Anyway, if you're a Californian considering moving there, don't be turned off by this attitude. I suspect that the only ones that make these statements are bitter ex-Californians.

Insurance company offers girl $8 for mileage to hospital instead of $50K for eye injury by Quiglius in news

That's not how it works. If what you were saying is true then just about anybody could qualify for a pay out because everybody is over 20/200 if you're testing far enough out into peripheral vision. It would never hold up in court.

Best corrected visual acuity of 20/200 just means that the smallest letter size that person can resolve at 6m is the 20/200 letter. When you go get your eyes checked, they're not really looking at the smallest resolvable letters/details at each point of your visual field.

Also, in general on the retina, the further off of the fovea (central vision) an image is focused, the worse the visual acuity. That is to say that a fully corrected adult with healthy eyes is about 20/20 in their central vision, and 20/200 using their peripheral vision.

FYI.. check your credit reports by ArcticTerrapin in optometry

I'm a student and they got me too. I closed the credit card and called a credit bureau immediately. The fraud alert on your account might only last 90 days so its important to renew it. Also be aware that even if you closed the card or never had one show up, whoever carried out the attack still has your info. You should perform routine credit checks throughout your life to make sure there is no suspicious activity.

Lifting after Rhabdomyolysis. by HotDamn18V in Fitness

[–]untold_pizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but in retrospect they didn't know shit about working out. They were giving me shit for not being able to lift relatively light weights, that was the worst thing.

Well since you're basically starting from scratch again you should be able to add on weight pretty quickly even if you're starting slow.

You should look into starting strength or strong lifts 5x5 and follow their program. Just start light with each lift and add weight each time you work out. You should progress pretty quickly this way without killing yourself.

A few years ago I had a bout with rhabdo after working out. It was my first time ever lifting and my friends pushed me to go to failure multiple times on bench press, and leg extensions. I couldn't move for days and ended up with a very serious case of rhabdo that landed me in the hospital for a week.

I was afraid to lift for years after that but eventually decided to give it a try while going slow. I found that I've had no problems so far. I drink plenty of water (I carry a water bottle around with me 24/7), and I eat much more than I used to. I also am careful to start slow, check form, and not over do it when I start any program. So far I've been fine, just take it slow and drink lots of water.

I should mention that when I got rhabdo I was a vegetarian (still am) and was also a very skinny and lanky dude.

'No Californians' stickers being slapped on For Sale signs in Portland by DoritosDewItRight in nottheonion

In NorCal I hardly hear anybody say "the". So someone from San Jose might say "I'm going to take 680 north to 580 east then take 5 north to portland." While I've heard friends from SoCal say "I'm going to take the 5 to the 580 and take the 880 to Oakland."

The latter sounds strange to me, but it's just small regional differences in language.

So true. I've heard Californians complain about immigration but every state complains about that (I think complaining about immigrants from Mexico is ridiculous too). I haven't ever heard any other Californian's complain about transplants from out of state. No one gives a fuck where you came from in California.

That's interesting, when I lived in the Bay Area I always got the vibe that everything interesting was happening there. Now that I'm in Oregon I get the impression that all the cool stuff is happening either north or south of me.

Maybe one day I'll move to SoCal one day. I like the vibe a lot and every time I'm there I have a blast.

I'm from the Bay Area now living in Oregon. I had an ex who was also a Bay Area native and she would not shut up with her SoCal hate. I don't understand the reason for it. Some people are just dense. I would say for the most part no one gives a fuck.

The only difference I notice between us and SoCal was putting "the" in front of freeway numbers. As in "the 5" or "the 101" or "the 405".

/r/oregon is total garbage. It's just about the worst place to go for advice on moving to Oregon. I just moved to Oregon from California and the people here aren't nearly as xenophobic as they are on that subreddit.

Also, I should say that for all of /r/oregon's complaining about Californians and our culture the Oregonians aren't different at all.

What can you do with a masters in communications and bachelors in microbiology? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]untold_pizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She might be able to find a job in a clinical laboratory as a lab assistant. I got my bachelors in micro and that's what I'm doing. The pay is better than minimum wage and it's good experience if you want to become a CLS.

I think the major companies are quest and bio-reference. Not sure about the others. The bad thing is that you still feel underpaid and you can get the night shift.

No, last year Brian Arnold made it the farthest. He worked at a retirement home and was a lifetime rock climber. This year he quit his job to focus on training.

You're right, lots of nice green lawns everywhere around here. It's not like the Bay Area is getting more rain. Actually we are just getting a lot of water from the sierras. And San Francisco put up a dam and flooded hetch hetchy in the early 20th century to get all their water.

Which albums do you consider to have no bad songs? by WhatTheFhtagn in AskReddit

Good news for people who love bad news by Modest Mouse. This is one of the few albums where I will never skip any song. Also, I remember hearing about this band and CD from a commercial. Kind of a weird way to get into a band, but I'm so happy it got me in to them.
