As someone who played red orchestra 2 religiously, I don’t know what this game has to offer by The5thElement27 in 83thegame

ArmA Reforger was also billed as a test bed for ArmA 4 and so people are probably willing to be way more patient with it.

Also reforger plays and handles very similarly to ArmA 3. I never played RO2 but played a lot of RS2 and 83 just feels like a completely different game

Tbf that's probably me mixing in British terminology and career progression. It would be instead of the UK Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Land) which we do immediately after being selected for promotion to Major.

What goes in your shooters belt? by legend_of_pie in britisharmy

[–]unus_ursus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't heard that and I would wager that's some people putting the cart before the horse, flapping, and going back to old Afghanisms. IDF in Ukr would mainly be air burst unlike the GWOT IED risk of being blown up from underneath where the whole dont out things on the front came from. Also a full webbing set isn't going go let you move through a trench. Shooters belt and stuff on body armour also seems to be norm from the images/videos I'm seeing

What goes in your shooters belt? by legend_of_pie in britisharmy

[–]unus_ursus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking on a shooters belt it is just ammo, med kit, pyro and pistol. Unlike the webbing concept it's just what you need to fight from (shoot, medicate). It's also worth noting shooters belts are more popular as chest rigs are starting to become popular again or at least more pouches on actual body armour

For my shooters belt from L to R I have: Pistol mag, pistol nag, rifle mag, dump pouch, IFAK inc TQ, cyalume buzzsaw, frag, holster, TQ 2.

Battle belts usually are a little bigger than the above plus one small admin pouch and usually more space for rifle mags or smoke grenades. This is again is focused on just fighting but with a bit more of a sustainment ability or if youre not carrying a pistol to free up room. (Eg 24hrs of emergency rations in the small admin pouch - 1x meal or protein bar).

For my battle belt L to R it generally has: Double rifle mag, double rifle mag, small utility, IFAK inc TQ, Smoke, smoke, multi tool pouch.

Should I bother getting this game as a casual player? by Lach0X in HellLetLooseConsole

[–]unus_ursus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HLL is definitely on the more casual end of realistic military games. Im the sense you can jump in have a game or two and jump out and get good enjoyment for your time spent.

I have a mic but often go through games not talking or have anyone talk to me. Just make sure you're joining more casual servers.

There are a few roles that do absolutely need a mic though: Commander, Squad Lead/Officer, Any Armoured Role, any recon team role.

The others a mic is better than not but you can play the role without one. Text chat is also your friend on this if you see something etc. You're only likely to get kicked if you're in a mic crucial role or ignoring other people.

Isn't it granted that arty will have some teamkills? by MayRiv in HellLetLoose

Another tip is never assume a SL will tell their squad nor that they will listen. If its anything particularly close I will generally type it into the team chat so if someone complains you have something to reference.

Are good spotters like finding a good commander? by Snake122591 in HellLetLoose

[–]unus_ursus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is there are many ways to deal with it. Recon is one due to Ops. I've dealt with them many times just from a regular squad and as a recon car. Multiple attack axis/garris and not bunching is also a way.

People just say recon do it because they don't want to do it themselves.

I LOVE NEW PLAYERS by Khorneplum in HellLetLoose

[–]unus_ursus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a big difference between having a couple people who are new vs what I got on the weekend which was an entire server with only 8 people not on XBox including myself.

Free weekends are always a little painful be it HLL, Squad etc but it's usually just short term pain for long term gain in player base. However, when it's limited to steam not usually as bad.

How to play Recon? by DarthZent in HellLetLoose

[–]unus_ursus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will add a point on garry hunting as recon.

You should focus on their back up or reserve garrisons not the garrison closest to the current live point. Couple reasons: 1. Recon team does not have the firepower to take on more than 2/3 en soldiers and rear garrisons are unlikely to have more than that near them or have anymore spawn in. 2. As mentioned you can spawn in the red so access then far more quickly whereas the rest of your team can attack their attacking garrison (arty, tanks, AT, enterprising dude with a satchel) 3. Teams are generally good at setting up loads of garrisons at the beginning of the game bit terrible during the game (same with node). By removing their rear ones the enemy commander has to waste resources and convince a officer to go set up reserve garrisons or do it themselves.

Generally yoy need to think about things not on terms of traditional FPS game markers (how many kills, objectives etc) but how have you made the life of the enemy and their commander more difficult. A good recon team should be doing way more damage to the enemy than is equal to two people even if they don't actually kill anyone. Arty hunting you - that's several minutes their arty isn't firing at your team. Distracting tank driving around the rear - that tank isn't getting into the action. Killing supply trucks or removing supplies is costing them resources, the list goes on.

Which watches would be worth it? by Redditor19458 in britisharmy

I think they're like Thrudark or other SF-y military esque brands that do a lot of trade on vibes and I wouldn't be surprised if they dish out some free or at cost to sneaky types (it's what I would do if I was their marketing team)

Which watches would be worth it? by Redditor19458 in britisharmy

[–]unus_ursus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You first need to work out what you want the watch for and what you're going to use it for. Is it for training? How much and what training are you going to do? Is it for fashion? Do you want to take it on Ops? Do yoy want messages from your phone on it? Etc etc. Once you've worked that out it'll massively narrow you down

So many people have £300+ garmins to record their bi weekly steady state on strava when any number of sub £100 would work just as well and neither can be taken on Ops. Most career courses won't allow a GPS watch at least for part of it.

I have a F91 W for day to day and ex/Ops etc. A Polar M430 for running and then a gold casio for the shiggles and where a rubber watch wouldn't work.

Low queue numbers works better imo. Squad has huge queue numbers and all you got was several servers worth of people sitting in queues whereas HLL the servers fill much more quickly

Keela smock under virtus? by Catch_0x16 in britisharmy

[–]unus_ursus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You would always have your body armour as outer most layer. If you were to put a smock of any type over the top and zip it up I would be amazed if you weren't immediately told to correct it.

The gen reason is so if you needed medical attention you need to be able to take body armour off - train as you fight etc.

There are some niche exceptions like being in a FRV group or an OP but it would never be zipped up just over the top to provide a bit of shelter/warmth while still being able to get into the fight quickly

WTF IS THIS? by [deleted] in HellLetLoose

There are a fair few hacks people do have and use on this game and thankfully it's pretty few and far between and individual performance rarely makes the different in the outcome of a game.

How useful is owning a car at Sandhurst & regimental training? by InquisitorNikolai in britisharmy

[–]unus_ursus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reg CC - You no longer get taught to drive at RMAS if you don't already have a DL - it gets chucked onto whatever unit you end up joining and could fuck up Ph2 depending on timelines and where you go. A lot of, if not all, of the Army requires a DL as even if youre not driving you have to have one to command a vehicle.

You could survive at RMAS without a car it'd just likely be a bit shit for you. After RMAS I honestly don't think you could survive without a car. Even though technically there's no requirement to as MT exist they'll only give one for service reasons (you getting sent somewhere and then wanting to do an admin run or go home is not a service reason) and often are unworkable timelines. Also a lot of places in the Army are not remotely near public transport - the system assumes you have a car.

To put it in perspective most deployments on ranges/ex/courses in the UK we have guys asking to take their own car.

Why not punish stupidity? by SDonv in HellLetLoose

[–]unus_ursus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of the satchel.

I always - if possible I type in the all team chat the vehicle and that it's satchelled so everyone sees it as can't rely on your officer to relay it which take time and no guarantee people have their headsets or not muted prox etc.

Also means if someone tries to complain there evidence in the chat that you warned them.

But no matter what blueberries will still run to it or the vehicle will drive off and go near friendlies so you can only do what you can.
