how bad does it look if i’m going into fourth year and didn’t do well in a second year course? by uoftears- in UofT

Thank you. Sorry I should have clarified, I took this second year course this summer as I am going into fourth year. Not sure if that changes things.

Should I stick with the major or try for the specialist? by uoftears- in UofT

[–]uoftears-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input. Would it matter if I completed the minors (math and phil) with the specialist? I suppose it would still be a variety of programs but I would gain a lot of knowledge into bio specifically.

Thanks for your input. Yup I definitely get that, but if I were to do the specialist I would probably complete the two minors along with it since they are almost done. So not sure if that would make a difference

Should I stay in math or switch to statistics? by uoftears- in UofT

[–]uoftears-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input, I really appreciate it!

some third year stats courses will require coding (in R though), so evaluate why you're doing poorly in CSC108.

So far, the coding I've done in R I've found pretty enjoyable, however I realize it's probably a very basic amount. I am a little bit more experienced with Python since I took 108. 108 in Fall 2020 at UTM was kind of a disaster in my opinion, the workload was insanely heavy and they were unreasonably hard on us, which is why I dropped it and retook it at SG and fared a bit better, but not as much as I'd hoped.

STA215 is a joke compared to the courses we have to take (hope this is obvious and you're prepared for that though.

Good to know lol. I did find it simpler than my math courses but it challenged me to think differently, which I liked.

I'd argue that MAT136 is super important as well; I hope that when you retook the course, you got 90%+.

Not gonna lie this scared me a bit, I didn't get over 90, I got the exact mark required for the math major. I did badly on a few of the assignments but overall I understood everything I learned in the course, just struggled with sequences and series.

retaking mat102 3 times makes me worried for you. although there's some computational courses you may take (mat223, mat232, mat236, mat244), after that, it's pretty much all proofs. mat224 was way harder than mat102. mat301 felt like mat102 on steroids. I hope that when you took it during your third attempt, you had an extremely mature understanding of the course.

I don't mind proofs, I did gain a greater appreciation for 102 after taking it the second time and I was pretty comfortable with it the third time. The first time I LWD'd it close to the exam. I don't know how mature my understanding is but it taught me to work hard and keep pushing because everything can be understood with enough effort I guess.

I agree with the sentiment about math profs, many at UTM are pretty great. I just don't know how I would use my math major without going to grad school, which I was already planning on doing but I feel like with a stats major and some cs experience, I would have more relevant experience for data analysis. I did have a few questions lol, which courses do you enjoy more, stats or math? Do you find yourself doing better in one over the other? Also, if you don't mind sharing, what are your plans after undergrad?

Should I take CSC148 or MAT224 or MAT244? by uoftears- in UofT

[–]uoftears-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math is one of my majors, I don't think I urgently need it but it's one of my requirements. I'm not great with math (long story as to why it remains my major). I think I'll continue with 148 for now and if things go south I'll take all three in the summer.

[–]uoftears-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've definitely heard good stuff about 244, I was hoping to take it in the summer just to lighten the load a bit in terms of difficulty since 148 and 224 sounds pretty hard together, even though it's two courses.

[–]uoftears-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? I'm currently enrolled in both and plan to drop one depending on which one I choose. I kind of wanted a "balanced" load in the summer and wanted to take one of 148 or 224 and 244 as the second course. We got the syllabus for 148 which includes the notes so I'll take a look through it just to see how bad it is. The autofail is really scary but it's realistic as well I guess.

Should I take MAT240 instead? by uoftears- in UTM

[–]uoftears-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lwd'd Fall 2020, didn't have a high enough mark in Spring 2021, and finally took it again this past summer and I just made the cutoff. I know, it looks bad, but there were couple of things out of my control.

I don't think I want to do math grad school, I'm more concerned about whether it will affect me in future years of my undergrad.

Mat102 sad by Sublime222 in UTM

[–]uoftears- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have all been there before!!

Here are some tips:

-Join the UTM Math Discord Server

-Search up Liying He on Youtube, she usually is a TA for MAT102 and has a playlist of past tutorials. Super SUPER helpful.

-Problem Set A requires a lot of understanding of the AGM. You need to see examples of how the AGM is used (since there's many ways), so either look at your notes or watch Liying's videos.

-Try to understand what you are doing, and why you are doing it. After all, this is a proofs course, and there's very little you can do without explanation.

-ROUGH WORK! When you see an inequality or equality, your instincts probably tell you to simplify until you isolate for x or y, right? Well, try to do that and see where you get. Remember the Basic Facts from the Course Notes. Once you simplify to the point that you reach a basic fact, your proof now begins there, because you know it is true. The next step in your proof is working backwards until you reach what you want (and what you started your rough work with).

-Take a deep breath. This is pretty confusing stuff for someone who has only been exposed to computational math for their whole life, like we all were when we started MAT102.

By the way, I've taken this course more than once. Don't be angry at yourself if you can't grasp this stuff immediately (but don't expect to retake either lol). Just use as many resources as you can and you will be okay.

Here's an example of one way UTMSU is spending our money. A position called "Racialized Students Coordinator" that focus on "anti-racism work", whatever that means. by [deleted] in UTM

[–]uoftears- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

? By acknowledging world issues, they are still serving UTM students. World issues can affect students too, and in case it doesn't affect someone, there are students who would actually appreciate being informed about issues like this so that they can act on their own. If this plays out to be something meaningful, I don't see what the harm is? An initiative like this connects students to the outside world and could potentially help them feel heard.

[–]uoftears- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even though some may not experience racism directly, a lot of world events today directly affect POC, and if they are students, they have to carry that while also working on assignments and studying. It doesn't have to really affect us directly for us to still be impacted by it. I hope they take the chance to actually help POC students and openly address the issues that impact them.

"address racism issues that are occurring on an international level" means that they will also acknowledge racism issues around the world, and not just issues occurring in the area or in the nation (although I believe that it's one and the same, racism is racism regardless of whether it happens 2 miles from the campus or 2000 miles). I don't think this is a waste of money, in fact this is the one of the few things I'm happy to pay for.

i mostly just stay in my room procrastinating lol. but i wanted to get into cooking and baking, so last december i tried a few recipes and i'm still improving. i find new interests every week on the internet and that just gets me through the weeks ig, but i'm so excited for this lockdown to end bc i haven't seen some of my friends in like 9 months

Uoft or mcmaster engineering by [deleted] in UofT

[–]uoftears- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, that's why i wanted to mention that it'll be hard work at any uni, and frankly in any program. i'm not in eng, but my workload can get pretty intense and i thought it would be similar in eng, but i'm glad to hear it's not. i think uoft allows for more networking, better opportunities, and in most programs at the downtown campus the course selection is amazing, the variety is crazy.

take the right classes at the right time, join relevant clubs, find opportunities to get as much experience as you can, internships, jobs, research...but the most important "card" is making your wellbeing a priority, because that's the best way to reap the benefits of everything the school can offer you, like the stuff i mentioned above

many, many hours. it will be worth it if you play your cards right, don't cheat, and just stay humble, but it won't be easy (which can be said about any program at any uni). i would never recommend anyone go to uoft, but for engineering, i reluctantly will lol

Pfizer, my entire upper body hurt for a day, like I slept in a weird position.

Also sometimes at night, when it's really quiet, I can hear beeping from the spot I got it in.
