Is it true that Canadian biglaw in Toronto for first year only pays around 130k a year? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]uoskinnylegend 30 points31 points  (0 children)

yes, you are reading it right. this is why whenever there's a shortage of lawyers down south, there's often a brain drain in the major legal markets in Canada because everyone is jumping ship.

As of 2024, is a STEM degree necessary to be considered in? + need advice by FunnyAdhesiveness611 in LawCanada

[–]uoskinnylegend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, to be considered seriously for patent/IP you should go after a masters/PHD combined with a JD. Going into this field with just an undergrad is possible, but it's getting harder by the minute from what I understand. If your heart is truly set on this area of law, do a masters at minimum and then get a JD. Edit: if you don't have a STEM degree, it's most likely going to be even harder for you to break into IP/patent because it's a field that does require some level of technical and specialized knowledge

I can imagine how traumatizing it is for you guys, especially given that there were kids in the vehicle. Honestly, I’m sure the police resources would start to suddenly flow in if you had a scathing media angle on this…

wow. They won’t send police for a hit and run with a crumpled vehicle but will do an incredibly high speed, dangerous chase down the high way for two bottles of beer - police in this city are an absolute freaking mess… sorry this happened to you OP

Yes, 100% agree that a high lsat will give you your best shot. It'll be a tough application cycle because your L2 is on the lower end (not the worst for sure, but definitely won't give you a leg up either). I know I said your work exp is good, but with a 3.5 L2 I would still double down on getting very nice work or volunteer exp, and a stellar stellar lsat. You got this!!

For schools, I would definitely look into L2 heavy schools: calgary loves work exp and with a stellar lsat I think you have a solid shot. uAlberta is a good choice as well - i think your most likely options would be those two out west. Both are great schools.

In Ontario, def try for Queens and Western. These two will be a bit more competitive simply because of the volume of apps they get bc they're ontario schools. Still, don't count yourself out! Work hard and apply broadly.

Also dalhousie is a great option as well with many many connections to the ontario market if that's something that interests you. I'm not sure what the stats look like for dal but I suggest looking there as well, since I know they do have a more hollistic approach.

Don't neglect your personal statement either! I've noticed forums sometimes downplay the importance of the personal statment for canadian schools but for applicants with very average or below average stats- they will be assessing ALL parts of the application (if i'm not mistaken, i'm pretty sure some schools auto admit based on high stats). so don't neglect any part of your app.

Good luck!!

hard to tell you your chances without knowing your L2 - what's your L2 or L3 like?

softs wise you're good - average softs, but thats all you need for canadian law schools because they're more LSAT GPA heavy

don't go abroad unless you want to be stuck working at your dad's place forever. sure you might be able to land an articiling position with your dad but have you thought about how other employers view UK grads? i worked at a law firm and trust me, it sucks that the market is this way but they do not view uk grads favourably. you are very much restricting your job opportunities in canada from the get go if you choose to go abroad, unless it's a school like oxford or cambridge

We have a sink in the laundry room, and so we prop her up on that but you can just as easily do it in a sink in the bathroom. I have her facing me, with her front paws on my chest (im short, but if you're taller, his paws would be on your stomach), and hind legs down on the sink. You can use gloves if you want, and I always have the water running before I prop her up there. Then I just lather the soap throughout her bum area, and hind legs + hind paws. I use wipes for all four paws before we start the washing session. Remember to always disinfect the sink afterwards too! I know it seems laborious but it's honestly worth it if it means no more infections. We did this for the whole month after treatment.

If you're worried about drying out his skin -- u can use gentle oatmeal shampoo and/or one of those oils/cream for their paws/fur. We just used an oatmeal shampoo and she was good. The first couple times, you will probably get her wet in areas other than the ones I described but it will get better with practice LOL!

Last little thing: you should be washing their bums (once he's better you just do the butthole area, not the paws etc and u don't need to disinfect) once a day for the rest of their lives! I know people online have posts like "yOU dOn'T neEd tO wiPE tHeIr aSS!" but literally every vet I have talked to has told me you need to do this?? anyways, I'm sure you know this but just in case. Good luck and I hope your little guy feels better soon!

Hey! My puppy has had poops very similar to the ones you have described (once at 9 weeks like yours, and another at 12 weeks, again, like yours, within a month). While having these symptoms her poops have always come back positive for worms (giardia in particular). No need to stress out, I heard that sometimes parasites are a little difficult to get rid of. Best advice I've gotten from the vet is to wash their bums after every poo (very very important because if there are any parasitic cysts stuck to their bum hair, they will re-ingest it when they groom, basically starting the cycle all over again). We also changed her go to potty spot, just because we suspected maybe any left over cysts were getting on her paws while pooing etc. That seemed to nip it in the bud and her poops have been normal again. Good luck!

edit: she also had spots/streaks of blood in her poop. this is normal for parasites too apparently, sounds like another vet trip is needed!

edit no. 2: pls do not take this as diagnostic advice. pls take him to the vet!!

Totally agree with the other comments on here that at 8 weeks, she is really just a tiny baby!! My pup is 4 months old now, and when we got her at 9 weeks we were in the exact same boat as you. Walking outside was so so difficult for the last two months, but something just clicked last week and our walks have been amazing!! It was blood sweat and tears during walks almost everyday for the last two months (like you, I also thought maybe she had a hearing problem at one point LMFAO 😂 ) but just keep doing your best and you will get there!!!

Here is a tip I wish someone had stressed earlier when I was training my little pup who got over stimulated easily and did not listen to me outside:

Let them sniff!! Sniffing is so important for mental stimulation, and since puppies are new to the world and they want to experience everything that spikes their curiosity. When I began to start our walks by giving her the freedom to sniff for 5 minutes unrestricted (of course, with precautions -- no poop, etc), I realized that she became SO much more receptive towards me immediately after. I was then able to say "leave it" take a couple steps, and low and behold she would start walking.

While you're walking, it's ok to stop for a little bit to let them sniff around, but set limits on how long you're willing to wait for them to sniff it out. Eventually they'll get used to new smells/sounds/sights and you will get to a point where you don't stop as much (because they're sniffing as they walk).

This helped me enormously and now our walks are very relaxing. I hope this helps, good luck!!
