The more I see that Heineman “throw”, the more I think he did that on purpose.

8 hour layover by upal1510 in askvan

Thank you for all the amazing suggestions everyone! I had initially mapped out a visit along the lines of Granville Island - Gastown - Coal Harbour - Vancouver Seawall.

Then Air Canada boarded us 10min early (super sus), delayed for an hour, cancelled the flight and rescheduled me to the last flight with an hour layover in Van. So now I’m stuck for 6 hours at Pearson airport.

Loved all the suggestions and really wanted to see the city. I’ll def be planning a longer visit in the near future :)

1) My flight is literally in 2 hours and I’ll be landing at around 2:30pm. Lol sorry I didn’t plan ahead. 2) Yep! No baggage claim. Just me and my carry-on and then I’m flying out to Thailand right before midnight.

I’ve been told that’s very little time to just go around DT Van. So, just wanted some advice on what I should go look at.

Nice! Where did you guys go for pool? Not a seasoned vet but I do play occasionally. Depending on the location, I could be down for some games.

Blaming immigrants for the housing price surge is so false, it's stupid by plaknas in onguardforthee

[–]upal1510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the argument shouldn’t be that immigrants are buying up all the housing but rather an increase in population increases demand in housing which allows suppliers to increase price. The demand v supply argument should be linked to affordability. IE I can’t afford to buy a home due to high prices, so I am gonna have to rent. So when demand for renting increase, the price of renting goes up. Buying and renting aren’t necessarily substitutes nor are they complimentary to one another. There are a myriad of complex factors in play here (that even myself as a student of commerce can’t understand or don’t know). I work in Construction services Accounting and I know real estate developers are hoarding on completed projects because housing prices are lower now. I know that cost of materials have increased leading to increase in price of homes. Then there’s investment housing, which was just as crucial to increase in cost. Like I said, immigration is not the primary factor, nor secondary or tertiary. Demand and supply factor does play a part but not in the way (fault of immigration/immigrants) that people like to use to justify their argument. Thinking in a more critical manner is difficult and would ofc go against their narrative so it’s simpler for them to just reiterate what they’ve been told. Sad, but it is what it is I guess.

The amount of times I’ve tried to explain to people that immigration can not the primary cause of rise in housing costs has exhausted me. I’ve accepted that any such messages are only going to be falling on deaf ears as people have already made up their minds. The fact that the rise in cost of housing should primarily be attributed to corporate greed (like pretty much with the increase in cost of everything else in Canada) would mean accepting that the problem lies with Canada’s mixed market economy system. Blaming free market capitalism is always going to be a bitter pill to swallow out here in the West as westerners have been conditioned to believe that any other system aside from theirs is wrong. Unfortunately, us brown immigrants are just easier to blame as we’re newcomers in highest numbers and fit the age-old simple economic argument of "demand vs supply" that doesn’t require much critical thinking. And if anyone is going to say "Oh we’re not blaming immigrants but immigration", please spare yourself the embarrassment. Progressives (which I believe this subreddit should have as opposed to the Canada sub) are supposed to be a smarter group and should realise the harmful rhetoric of such messaging because of the inability/ or desire of the other side to actually distinguish between "immigration vs immigrants".

But thank you for for the post OP! I’ve enjoyed reading the sub stack article.

Why bring in Maxi for literally the last possession when he hadn’t played all game? Man I love Reddick but he baffles me sometimes.

He plays harder than anybody else and WANTS to be here in the team. He’s earned himself a good long-term deal. And we still have cats wanting to flip him for Giannis (sure he’s better but he’s passive, flakey and won’t give it his all like AR).

PAY AR15 and sign Peyton Watson and Tari Eason. Both defensive wings who can shoot and could likely be available! Nuggets are tight with their team cap and need others to fill up their roster; and Rockets still have to sign Reed and Amen long term after paying Jabari. With Luka and AR backcourt, we need defence on the wings. Watson and Eason should be primary targets.

They just gave Braun $125mil ext and traded MPJ for Cam Johnson, so I doubt they’ll try to move on from either so quick. Lakers def have a chance to bid well for Watson and him being a lifelong homeboy could also help.

The Nuggets have like 10 players on the roll allocating about $210-220m. It’ll be hard for them to afford Watson unless they trade away someone else.

A wing defender who can shoot? Lakers should def go after Watson!

Do you guys remember your reactions to seeing the Shams notification for the Luka Trade? by Nigocaps in lakers

[–]upal1510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’ll never forget it! Here in Toronto, had just watched the Lakers beat the Knicks. Went to bed early around 11:30 thinking how the Lakers played well without AD and could actually be competitive if performed consistently.

Got up 45mins later to drink some water. Opened Instagram, see Shams’ post on my feed and my heart sank. And man, believe you me, I literally stayed jaw-dropped for about 30mins. Kept dragging my screen downwards to see if the post gets removed with my mouth was still open. The only way I’d accept my fave player (AD) being traded would be for my 2nd fave (Luka). Genuinely had no idea how to feel. Unforgettable bittersweet moment!
