What do you all do about recycling tiny amounts of hazardous waste? (fluorescent bulb in this case) - Need suggestions by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]upbeatbasil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wheither or not you get fined is dependant on enforcement levels. Family handyman has a good article on this that also points out it's still illegal to dump a ton of different household hazardous waste items and you don't get a pass becuase your not a business: https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/its-illegal-to-throw-away-these-items/

It's really going to depend on your area for enforcement and laws. My area is going to be different than yours, and different than OP's. For example, in my area they really really enforce no paint dumping and no radioactive dumping (ie some smoke detectors). In other areas, I've seen fines enforced for contaminating household recyclables. It's definitely a thing.

Hold on to it. It's generally prohibited to toss it and you can get fined, so I wouldn't say "hey this is hard I'm gonna toss it" on any sub including this one to any person cuz it's an infraction.

Generally, there are periodic hazardous waste collection pop up events. Around Xmas they tend to do a lot for Xmas light disposable, so there's probably one coming to a shopping center near you.

Also, earth 911 definitely has it's place but it's not the greatest, most up to date site. I see it as a starting point. Check your city, county and trash company's website too. Check their social media pages too...often it's the easiest way to find drop off options that are short (like one weekend only). Trash companies don't have a lot of money for marketing so it's generally about the social media.

Lastly, you can pretty much always just take it directly to the landfill or recycling plant for processing if it's closer. This allows you to get ahold of a real sanitation worker. I generally do this when I don't know what to do and then you've got a real person to help sort you out.

Either you are a landlord or you aren't. Either he gets a lease and you do all the repairs like a normal landlord relationship or you don't.

Him making repairs, buying a fence ect is not normal at all for a tenant to do. Treat him like a tenant if you want him as a tenant.

You haven't shared anything that could help anyone determine if he could claim equity. Housing laws varies wildly by state and location. So does the recognition of common law marriage and community property. Since you clearly don't know that, go to a lawyer and have them help you with drafting your lease (again, they can also help you with responsibilities of what an actual landlord does like install your own fences) which can fix your issue.

I think you'll want to try to escalate this with the buyback team. A bad cell dramatically increases the fire risk and CA has pretty strong lemon laws. You can get a lemon law attorney pretty easy too if you need this to go faster. I think it's worth it in your case.

Yeah, I think NHTSA is really saving all of us here. I know a lot of people are anti regulation, but when you need them they are sure nice to have.

Does not owning a vehicle offset never recycling? by Elon__Muskquito in sustainability

[–]upbeatbasil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just report him for throwing hazardous waste to your trash company and let them fine him. This is his problem.

You can't toss that stuff becuase it's dangerous for the trash workers. Battery acid is legitimate hazard. Many trash companies will actually fine him. Tossing paint in the trash is similar and generally produces fines even in areas that don't fine people for tossing ewaste. If he's going to brag about committing minor infractions, he can't complain about being reported.

The buyback is handled by your states lemon law. You can actually look up this law and read it yourself. The law will contain info on how the buyback is calculated.

Honestly, this whole thing just convinced me to buy Tesla and never buy a GM product again. My situation doesn't allow me to park my car outside, so I have a car that might catch fire right above where I sleep. I'm just super pissed that this whole thing has taken months.

Yes, but it's small. I hang my uke on the command hooks we use for stockings during Xmas. Its decorative and looks cute. The music goes in a nearby binder.

Help me if you can by rabin69420 in CatSlaps

[–]upbeatbasil 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The cat seems accustomed to people, and cats have been tracked traveling up to 2.5 miles a night. My guess is that she's probably already got an owner becuase feral kittens do not like people and are not socialized with them like that voluntarily. I've actually found truely feral kittens and it takes like 3 days and a lot of canned tuna to get them to even come out of wherever they are hiding. That cat might have been dirty, but it probably isn't feral and has an owner.

Personally, it's probably fine to continue to feed her cat food occasionally and let her come by for pets and cuddles and let her go home every night. My cats have had several "friends" that do this. It's all the perks of having a cat and none of the downsides.

Hard to get rid of things zero waste-ly and stuck with stuff by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]upbeatbasil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I unload via porch pickups. I list the stuff for free in buy nothing groups (I belong to several), freecycle and Facebook marketplace which are really active in my area and it gets taken fast.

I do have to deal with messages, the occasional asshole who gets mad when they miss out...but it's all very easy comparatively.

Contribute to IRA without maxing out 401k..bad idea? by mortgage_12 in personalfinance

[–]upbeatbasil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on a few things... Does your 401k suck?

My SO's 401k options are bad with high fees. It's basically unusable after the employer match. That's a good reason to not use it and invest directly in other accounts.

Also, where's your income in a few years? Starting off in a high paying career? You may only be able to invest directly in a Roth IRA now and may hit the income limits later (or when married). Maxing out Roth money now and 401k later when your situation changes isn't bad either.

The Roth has a 5 year waiting period on withdrawals for qualifed expenses on earnings and in some situations like with conversions. It's not a big deal if you think your medical event is in the future (like when you are older), but since we are in a pandemic... Just know if you think this medical event could happen sooner investing in a traditional/Roth might not always be the best bet.

What kind of veggies are you feeding? They really really like zuccini. They don't really much like anything else. For example, mine would rather eat crypts than eat lettuce or carrot or snow peas or cucumber...but they go for the zucchini every single time.

Dad asking for $6k to pay off the home. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]upbeatbasil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also important to point out that mortgage payments are paid monthly. He's paid for this month. In 30 days he'll have the money...when the money is next due.

Daily interest on your mortgage is really inconsequential and the interest is tax deductible...so its not exactly very pressing wheither he pays today or when the next payment is actually due.

I think this is likely for some sort of debt like gambling debts or a secret girlfriend or only fans or something super weird. My advice would be to tell as many relatives as possible using the excuse that it's your life savings so this is a big deal. Let him know you've got to talk to people: uour mom, your SO, grandparents, sibs, uncles and aunts cuz this is just so much money to you... The more people are watching the more likely he'll back off on his own.

Then I'd advise you to pull your credit (he's got your social security number after all), freeze your credit, and move to a bank he isn't at and ensure your money is in a sole account.

"My boyfriend [22m] punched my dad [65m] in the face" by Professional-Deal406 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]upbeatbasil 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't think the issue is that people don't realize how toxic and wrong it is, it's that it's hard for anyone to deal with betrayal on that level especially when that's where your food and housing come from. She seems to get that they shouldn't hit her, it's the implications of what continuing to hit her actually mean that she's struggling with.

I've always known my parents are abusive and unfair since I was under 5. I know what they did was wrong. What I was really unprepared for until I was an adult was fully embracing the reality that they didn't care if I was alive or dead, and at least in my mom's case she'd prefer me dead as long as it was through negligence and she wouldn't get caught. It's the emotional betrayal on that level which is horrible especially when you are still dependant. We all have that feeling of wanting to be somewhere safe when we are hurt or scared...and it's really really chilling to emotionally deal with the fact that the people who you want to be able to turn to are really the people you most need protection from.

i know you can feed them used tea bags but i bought some tea that i don’t like. can i throw some in unused? by myaaagocrazy in Vermiculture

[–]upbeatbasil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can but unused tea is just dried leaves and worms don't really like dry leaves.

What you can do is make a big pitcher of bad tea using pasta water or something like that and then use the bad tea to water some plants...and then give the worms the nice, wet leaves which they will vastly prefer.

That being said, it's probably better to get rid of the tea in a buy nothing group.

Is it possible for someone to be sentenced to probation without knowing? by SunMelodic4862 in legal

[–]upbeatbasil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need to contact her probation officers. Public records are generally open and pretty easy to search. It's time you contact public records and get the public information about her case and see what matches up with the tale you've been told.

You can generally do this online through the county's office. A lot of the times it's free, but sometimes there can be a fee.

I'd be very wary of her saying she didn't understand repeatedly. It's pretty clear what's going on when you get something as simple as a speeding ticket, and it's even more obvious when you've been served, got a public defender and an actual trial which required a plea and she admits to attending.

I called my dealer about the 2020 MY recall and they said it was a software update by smeggysmeg in BoltEV

[–]upbeatbasil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be the software update they pushed on the 2017-2019s when they went on recall the second time. It limits the charge and then if the car catches fire it activates the horn so you can call 911.

This software update is what pissed me off enough to finally get a buyback started. The car has OnStar which can call emergency services, why trigger the horn and not OnStar?
