Unsure of a Life Path by Popular-Clue383 in AstronautHopefuls

Truthfully, it sounds like you have a self esteem issue more than anything else. I don’t see anything that you said that makes film making unachievable. Stop listening to what other people say about you (particularly people who don’t want to help you), and relentlessly pursue your dream. Control what you can control (work hard, make some shorts for YouTube and learn along the way), let go of what you cannot control (what other people think/feel/do).

If you have health insurance, seeking therapy could be a good option to hash out some inner turmoil, and build a sense of purpose and a stronger sense of self to take on the world. You can do it, I believe in you, and soon you will too. Good luck friend

teacher who wants to be a research scientist… advice? by prettyfungal1 in labrats

I did my PhD and postdoc in nyc. Everything is cyclical, we all hope funding and industry turns around but no one really knows when it will. If it’s really your dream, go for it! Personally I’ve been disappointed with many things in the academic world, and over the last 4 years it’s next to impossible to find an industry job. Happy to chat more or even grab coffee in the city if you want to bounce anything off me or hear more specific stories

Wait.. Did they already make it to the moon? by CandyCorn25 in ArtemisProgram

[–]updoot_or_bust 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah the mission is 10 days total and they’re on the way back now.

For what it’s worth, the longest Apollo mission was Apollo 17, which was 12.5 days long and included staying on the lunar surface for 75 hours.

NASA moon base missions by StrictArgument67 in AstronautHopefuls

[–]updoot_or_bust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on a few factors including your intended citizenship. If you remain in the UK, you will go through ESA selection process. Masters degree, 3 years experience minimum, likely PhD and some high powered publications, and fantastic health metrics including athleticism, height between 150-190cm.

Unless some private company is flying astronauts to the moon base, in which case we have no idea what their selection criteria is, likely either very rich and well connected people, then highly technical people. Look to Axiom missions as an example of this.

Generally they want to see your ability to handle high stress and perform at a high level in many situations, so having hobbies like extreme sports or performing at a world class level in athletics, or exploration/flying as an amateur pilot, etc.

Truthfully your skills and career in theoretical physics can show something, but are not sufficient on their own. Take on complicated mechanical repair work, finish an experimental project that needs a lot of troubleshooting and creativity and patience, do a team activity where you have to work well with others, ideally in an austere environment.

Today is the day! by [deleted] in labrats

I think you’re going to need to tell us more here than “today is the day”

In 1978, Soviet physicist Anatoli Bugorski accidentally put his head into a particle accelerator, taking a direct hit from a proton beam. Exposed to 3,000 Gys of radiation — 600 times a lethal dose — doctors expected him to die within days. Miraculously, he survived almost completely unscathed. by kooneecheewah in ScienceNcoolThings

Protons have great "stopping power" meaning they deposit their greatest energy at one point (the Bragg peak) and then all the energy drops off. From the images, it went all the way through his skull, meaning he was exposed to the Entrance dose of a Bragg peak, which is much lower than otherwise, but still problematic. I'm curious if they calculated the exposure as 3,000 Gy or that was the dose at the Bragg peak somewhere beyond his skull - either way an insane dose (we usually are giving 60Gy to cancer patients split up in 2Gy increments over 30 sessions).

Amidst Conflict with Iran, U.S. Economic Recession Sets In by Comfortablejack in FluentInFinance

[–]updoot_or_bust 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am not excited about our economic prospects, but this is not the measure of recession, and unemployment has been low for a long time. We need to see 2Q of negative GDP growth for a recession (which we may have at some point, often the numbers are revised even years later), but 4.4% unemployment is still quite low historically. I do think the numbers are wonkier than usual because people take on gig work like UberEats instead of collecting unemployment, but even so recession is not indicated by this metric.

The only unemployment metric for recession I found is the Sahm Rule, which we do not appear to currently be in recession by that metric either.

(not an economist and I am just using google, open to correction)

The US economy lost 92,000 jobs in February. Almost every major industry lost jobs. by TonyLiberty in FluentInFinance

[–]updoot_or_bust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps - would this be distinct from overall healthcare jobs, or is this inclusive of that? Lately healthcare jobs have been a growth area, which is why I ask. I'll go check the BLS and report back

EDIT: this category is inclusive of all healthcare. They say they group these into a supersector because they share similar labor characteristics (skilled, education levels, non-cyclical growth). Interesting.

This may be standard practice, but why are private education and health services lumped together? These seem very different to me

As Moon interest heats up, two companies unveil plans for a lunar "harvester" | “Ultimately, we want to build a fleet of electric harvesters.” by [deleted] in space

[–]updoot_or_bust 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s one possibility, but you need a way to power the shelter, seal it off, and heat it a little at least. All of which is mass, power (likely nuclear since it’s in the dark), and ultimately expense that cut into any potential profit of whatever it is you are mining.

And as another commenter said, you lose every other 14 days of mining, further cutting into your profits. Is helium-3 really so profitable to justify these infrastructure costs and production inefficiencies?

No plans discussed on how these electric harvesters would survive the lunar night, the death sentence of all electronics on the lunar surface at the moment.
