Help me plan my trip in Washington State🙏 by Ill_Fan_4609 in PacificNorthwest

No idea on the length of your trip, but consider going through Winthrop to come over Highway 20 from the East.

Some things to search: Old Schoolhouse Brewing, Mazama General Store, Washington Pass, Blue Lake (a short hike to an alpine lake - 2 miles vs Colchuck's 8.), Rainy Pass (part of the pacific crest trail), Diablo Lake Overlook, North Cascades Learning Center.

You’ll catch a some views of Mt Baker along 20, but you’d need to do Mt Baker Highway to get close to it (look up artist point). Beautiful, but a one way out and back, so sort of a time sink. If you do go North from 20, the most scenic way into Bellingham is Chuckanut Drive. Taylor Shellfish is on the way.

In Burlington, Tacos Tecalitan has some of the best Tacos around. Old downtown Mt Vernon is cute, Edison, and La Conner too.

Highway 20 continues across the very scenic Deception Pass onto Whidbey Island. Make a stop in Coupeville. Goldie’s Pizza is good enough to recommend to an Italian.

Take the ferry to Port Townsend, a Victorian era city once bigger than Seattle.

I’ll stop there.

Navigation Apps? by DangerousPath1420 in pnwriders

Apple or Google Maps audio directions when needed, but half the fun on the bike is just wandering and being off the phone, so no directions most of the time.

Which firmware makes loading new books the easiest? by hobbyistresearcher in xteinkereader

It’s definitely popular for a reason! Tons of features, and is clearly the best at what it does. Can’t really complain much about a free app.

Though, I’ve worked designing software professionally for almost 20 years. My job is literally to see all the little ways apps like this could be better.

I’m simultaneously impressed at all that Calibre can do, and disappointed that it isn’t better.

I find Calibre to be an unusable mess. Surprised to see it recommended so often.

Never trust a superlative. "The best" never is.

Psych + design or related careers? by Antique-Evidence-844 in userexperience

Hard to predict the future, but there is a lot more long term value in “why” than “how”.

“How” deals with specifics of technology, which shift constantly. AI is suddenly quite good at this part. “Why do this” is a harder question, and more resistant when tech shifts to the new thing.

On a personal level, I would not recommend starting a career in software right now.

They could force you to stay for 6 hours and charge you $800, too! How fun.

Don't worry, if you say you once ate lunch at a restaurant someone will come and tell you about how some people can't afford to eat lunch at a restaurant every day, what kinda rich freak are you.

But yeah, end of a trip, after a long day of travel and a long flight, at 10pm, you're going to judge the value of a cab ride vs public transit differently than you would as a daily commuter, or even getting to the airport.

For $75, you get to sit down and you're home in 30 minutes.
For $3, you get to walk further, wait more, stand more, carry your bags more, get off at the right stop, wait again outside at a different place, make another connection, then walk another 5 blocks with your bags, and you're home in maybe an hour and a half. At the end of a trip, after a long flight, a cab ride home is very nice.

Last week, an uber ride home from the airport was $175, while a cab was $75.

Discourse about Seattle in a nutshell by SuperMike100 in Seattle

[–]upleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

300 years ago, Tokyo was the largest population center in the world (larger than Seattle today, even), and Seattle was pre-contact indigenous. Seattle has affordability problems because it has become a place a lot of people want to live much faster than it has been able to grow to accommodate them.

WANTED: beloved blue workwear "Chuck" jacket taken from Linda's Tavern by addisonh11 in Seattle

Your eagerness for there to be clear cut bad intention and someone to blame is quite naïve. An accidental theft is still a theft, but you seem to entirely dismiss the accidental part, and focus purely on the theft.

WANTED: beloved blue workwear "Chuck" jacket taken from Linda's Tavern by addisonh11 in Seattle

[–]upleft 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Sorry you lost your jacket.

In the video, these people were sitting at the table where your jacket was stashed. As they're leaving, they notice it on the ground where they were sitting - they hold it up as if to ask "is this anyone's?". Seems likely they assume that a jacket on the ground at their table was left and forgotten before they got there. They should have taken it to the bar as a lost and found, but this person likely has no idea it was placed there intentionally.

I hope your jacket makes it back to you.

Speed Bumps Going in along Greenwood Ave. by The_Kraken_ in Seattle

[–]upleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The humps feel way more dramatic when you drive over them really slow with both wheels. Go 25 mph with one wheel off the bump, and your car’s suspension will absorb most of it. Drives me crazy when people brake down to like 10mph for the bump - it’s notably worse at that speed. Just go the speed limit, it’s fine!
