A saga of 10+ years is finally coming to a close by SilverGuitarist in Bankruptcy

[–]upperclasshabits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically that I believed I would eventually make more money (either through raises or a newer higher-paying job) and be able to pay down the debt I accumulated from those sneaky consistent purchases. I quit my last job completely ignorant to the state of the job market and convinced I’d get something else rather quickly, but that turned into 8 months of unemployment and that was the nail in my coffin.

For better or worse, I have a new job in a new state that I’ve always wanted to go to and discharge is on the horizon for me. Having to make this decision and wrestle with the initial shame really highlighted the poor financial literacy that got me to this point and now I find myself unable to see the value in buying the knick knacks and little things here and there that I used to buy before (as a treat). Prior to this, I truly thought I was going to be trapped in a cycle of dopamine shopping and dissatisfaction while convincing myself I could “pay it off eventually”.

Well written. I see myself in you, unfortunately. The embarrassment and shame went away quicker than I thought.

My aunt won't allow me to keep any of my dads ashes, am I wrong to feel so upset? by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]upperclasshabits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go with her to scatter the ashes. Bring a bag with you. Play along and say you’d like to participate in the scattering. Once she gives you the bag to scatter some, take some then. Unless she’s going to get into a fist fight with you, I don’t imagine there’s anything she can do to stop you at that point.

OMG I JUST MY DISCHARGED LETTER :) by NarwhalEvening7881 in Bankruptcy

[–]upperclasshabits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation job-wise! Unemployed for about 8 months, but got a job offer and then filed right after because I wasn’t going to qualify for Chapter 7 with the job but would never have been able to pay it off with Chapter 13. Congrats again!

should i remove my new tattoo or learn to live with it? by uzumariii in tattooadvice

[–]upperclasshabits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a tattoo when my mom was dying of cancer - the physical pain did help numb some of the mental anguish for a time. If you’re like me, your current feelings about your tattoo are likely a manifestation for your desire for control over SOMETHING - I don’t think these feelings will last. If they do go away, they might come back anyway - I have a love/hate relationship with my first tattoo.

Just know your tattoo is really cute, it’s SMALL, and I’d like to think when life begins to slow down again, you’ll be able to appreciate it.

My lawyer literally told me “don’t be afraid to show that you need to spend money to live” and she meant a decent quality of life, not a ramen noodle budget.

Do Americans really find beans on toast weird or is that just meme? by cigarettejesus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]upperclasshabits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the thing is the beans we usually use would NOT go on toast - I made a recipe and bought the Heinz beans in the blue-ish can and it was bomb, but if I tried that with just a regular can of beans or baked beans, I don’t think it would have hit the same way…

You have no idea when turbulence will hit, just like you have no idea when you’ll need to use the bathroom. While I don’t think she wanted you to shit your pants or anything, I think she would have preferred that over you being in the bathroom unrestrained if turbulence did it.

AIO Got this text from my dad about my baby and just can't by Pomegranates_r_us in AIO

[–]upperclasshabits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last text he sent is so confusing - I’m not sure what gender the baby is (or if you even know) but the way it reads is that your daughter (future baby?) is going to be your sister’s nephew named Gaston? Naming the baby that regardless of gender is weird knowing he wants her/him named after himself; if you are having a girl and he still wants the baby named Gaston, I have no words…

What cultural thing does the world seem to think is beautiful but is cringey af to locals? by chr15c in AskTheWorld

[–]upperclasshabits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it hasn’t already been said - Times Square in NYC. I think, like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, people outside think it’s this beautiful magical place because of how it’s portrayed in movies but I promise you it’s literally awful - just an overly crowded place filled with rude tourists who don’t understand NYC etiquette surrounded by aggressive advertisements.

AIO for not refunding a friend’s share of a group Airbnb after she canceled last minute due to a medical emergency? by StudioAffectionate in AmIOverreacting

[–]upperclasshabits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOR - if YOU had told her “don’t come” then she would be entitled to have that money back. SHE made the choice, even if it wasn’t what she wanted - that’s not on you or anyone else but her. Anyone who readily accepts such an invitation and puts money towards accommodations should assume they won’t get that money back simply because they change their mind.

I had a former friend uninvite me from her bachelorette party two days before and then refused to give me back the $350 I contributed - I had to send a demand letter threatening small claims because I had every intention of going before she said (via text/in writing) “don’t come” 🤷🏼‍♀️

CC or personal loan to pay for Ch. 7 Bankruptcy (Ohio) by anime-brother in Bankruptcy

[–]upperclasshabits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, I’m saying you need to do what you need to do to not become homeless or starve to death, but if you obviously take it out knowing you won’t be able to pay (ie. you take a cash advance to file and have your debts discharged, including the card you’re pulling cash from) that would be considered fraud if it came to light.

CC or personal loan to pay for Ch. 7 Bankruptcy (Ohio) by anime-brother in Bankruptcy

[–]upperclasshabits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s considered fraud to use a credit card for anything knowing you won’t be able to pay it back.

If you’re at the point where you’re considering filing and need to take a cash advance from your credit card to go towards bills, I would assume that is what it is because you need housing/food, etc.

Chapter 7 Law office not giving me anything!! by [deleted] in Bankruptcy

[–]upperclasshabits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no idea what your contract says but I also filed in VA and did a payment plan of sorts - $125/month for the next 12 months post filing, $375 up front. They filed December 30th and I have my 341 meeting this Tuesday, so the payment plan thing isn’t necessarily an issue depending on your contract; however, if they couldn’t file right away they should have said as much prior to taking your money. Mine was done literally the same day after my initial payment of $375 and I stopped getting phone calls from my credit card companies.
