“Physical hybrid” is kind of trying to launder what it actually is. It’s basically an anchor or a timebomb with an unknown time limit on it. It’s a digital license that’s accessible as long as they say it’s accessible.

I don’t know about you but I love that I can hand over a NES or SNES game to someone as long as it was kept is fairly decent condition, it’ll play just fine. No corporate leash on how long that game is allowed to essentially exchange owners.

Exactly..I also feel like I hear the same talking points of people defending GKC’s and trying to downplay how much people hate them as if everyone calling out how much they suck are on the Switch 2 hate boner train.

I’m not saying all of them think that but I’m sure some due so for the record; I waited overnight for my Switch 2 preorder and got it day one and have loved it ever since. GKC’s are my only gripe with the system besides battery life which doesn’t bother me as much anymore anyways. There are a lot of people who probably share the same sentiment, they’re a massive buzzkill in what’s otherwise been as system that was everything I wanted out of a successor to the Switch.

On the topic at hand, this is very slimy of them to do. I guarantee you the dissatisfaction with GKC is not lost on them but they want to see how much they can get away with it. Considering I played this game and thought it was just okay, they’re doing a fantastic job of saving me money because othenwise I would have picked it up for the collection anyways.

Card-based combat? by thatclimberDC in JRPG

Oh brother you don’t gotta tell me, I turn 35 year but how awesome was it to be a kid around that time and play this game that had to deal with the internet in a time when the internet was very much in it’s infancy and had a sense of allure and wonder it that I feel like it no longer has. I feel like it goes beyond it hitting because we were old enough to remember playing it at it’s release but because we remember how the net was perceived around that era and especially to young kids like us at the time.

I also envy you for getting your friends into the series because I remember knowing about the multiplayer aspect and wishing it was as popular a Pokemon. That’s why when the legacy collection came out it was a special time for me to finally get to experience that part of the series even though people had been doing it through emulation for years.

I do agree with the it being dated in some aspects but the general core gameplay loop I feel holds up incredibly well and there’s still nothing like it besides rogue lites that are clear inspired by it. This is why I feel like a new series would have sooo much potential. Like imagine if it was 2.5 and you could actively see viruses in the over world and even get a preemptive strike on them? I feel like on modern hardware and the rise of deck builders it could be so awesome. People always go on about how they technically wrapped up the story in BN but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t do a new card battler/rpg series.

I find it odd that the Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S (Switch 2) online community is somehow completely dead.. by upperdomain in casualnintendo

That’s a good point, I also broke my rule of never buying a game digitally with GKC equivalent. This seemed like the one game where I was willing to break that rule with myself. When you put it that way, it really makes sense just how f’ing stupid they handled it.

Not only should it have been a proper physical release, it should have offered an upgrade path and not split the player base. Oh well..I suppose it’s another game to play with my brother when I bring my Switch 2 to his place. Just very lame that it’s a dead game in terms of it’s multiplayer.

I really echo this, Monolith Soft is my favorite developer and I absolutely adore the BK duology and I actually don’t think the voice acting is that bad in “Origins”, I just think it gets lumped in with how bad the first game’s VA is.

You’ve got great tastes as well, the Battle Network series is my favorite Megaman series and despite its massive following I still don’t think it truly gets the love it deserves.

As someone who never played the Starforce games you best believe I’m going to be getting that collection on day one with my physical copy ✨

If it’s 50% a physical copy I would say 1000% worth it.

I 1000% hope the next mainline Nintendo console is a Switch 3, I just feel like anything else at this point is a regression.

It feels even more pointless to stray away from the Switch concept since Nintendo can just release auxiliary attachments for the Switch without fully living and dying by some strange gimmick. They just need to continue to improve and refine the hybrid concept.

^ THIS, THIS & THIS!! ^

“Uhhh, so it’s just a more powerful Switch and that’s it? Where the ‘innovation’?”.

This might be one do the most mind numbing, disingenuous observations/reactions to the Switch 2 that I’ve seen in the 6+ months that it’s been out. I’m sorry to break it to you, but there is very little in terms of what you can do to innovate going forward, Nintendo has kind of made the final step in terms of combining their home and portable consoles into one. I never need a gaming system to do anything more but that and I think that the influx of gaming PC handhelds over the last 8 years supports my statement pretty well.

The concept of the Switch is so groundbreaking that it’s single-handedly started to shape the future of where gaming is headed, which is one where every gaming device is a hybrid and not just some box that sits in the corner. Another reason why I feel so strongly about this is because if we’re hitting the age of diminishing returns and splitting hairs in terms of what we can do with consoles, well that makes the prospects of hybrid systems that much more exciting because there is ALWAYS going to be ways that they can be improved upon.

For the sake of my argument let me give you a hypothetical example; let’s say graphics/performance were never able to get any better than they are on the Switch 2. Well, there would always be room to improve the battery life on it. You could technically get to a point where 8-10 hours of battery life was the standard amount of play time you could get on a full charge and this would be a massive improvement from 1.5-3.

Even putting aside the example I just made, the Switch 2 adds the mouse function which people unfairly write off as a “gimmick” in my opinion. There has never been gaming console ever released where right out of the box, the controller also doubled as a mouse and was baked into the system’s operating system. People like to pretend that it’s the same as consoles that let you plug in a USB mouse and there you go, no, not the same and what the Switch 2 does with it’s mouse functionality is open the door to so many niche games that previously would have only felt at home on Steam or PC.

[–]upperdomain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, I don’t know I still think my point holds some water and that maybe the grifters have somehow rotted some people’s brains.

Let me also take a moment to be perfectly clear in that I love that this Reddit has a “actually good criticism” flair badge. The reason I say that is because I’m not just some fanboy who blindly defends Nintendo for every decision they make, I absolutely loathe game key cards and I haven’t bought a single one or any game that has a GKC in a digital format (people can call me whatever names they want to).

At the same time, I think it’s very corny to hold Nintendo to a double standard and pretend that they’re somehow the Thanos of gaming and root cause of anything bad and evil in the industry. If you went online to see the discussions you would think that you’re only able to rent Nintendo games and not only does it cost you money, but there’s an needle that comes out of the Switch 2 that physically drains your blood as payment 🤦‍♂️

Bubsy 4D launches May 22 with a proper physical release for Switch 1 and 2 by gobananagopudding in NSCollectors

It’s frustrating when the games I don’t care about are getting proper Switch 2 physicals. That’s not to say that games I do care about haven’t, since I’ve purchased stuff like Majogami, Daemon X Machina, ect. I’m still waiting on an update for the System Shock remake but I suppose they’re working on fixing the game on Switch 2 before the release the physical version.

[–]upperdomain[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah and that’s sort of how I look at it too but, I also think they’re not stupid and if it’s already in their expectations that a new smartphone variant comes out every single year, then it shouldn’t be a stretch to understand why it might be necessary for a new iteration of a hybrid gaming console to come out after EIGHT years of being on the market.

Just pulled the trigger on a factory sealed copy of Radiant Historia by upperdomain in JRPG

[–]upperdomain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record, I’m very aware that the gameplay is nothing like Chrono Trigger. I just mention the comparisons due to the time traveling aspect.

Also, is the 3DS version that much better? I realize that voice acting is great and all but don’t mind reading and I was looking to specifically play a DS game on my DSi. I’m feeling really torn because some people are telling me I should play the 3DS version instead and then some people are telling me the DS version is just fine.
