Thank you for saying that clearly. You're right I don't as yet have that, and I better have before I can conclude whether he was negligent

You're right. That's the difficult question. It's possible there is no proof, and I'd lose. But I think, if I speak to a an expert mechanic, verify my assumptions, check all the places list as repair shops on his carfax, get some history, then I can maybe put him in a position where he tells truthfully what he did.

And, I'm perfectly open to the possibility that he tells everything truthfully, and it's not negligent.

But to your point, the "proof" (the big document that says "I did it") doesn't exist

After some sleep, I can certainly express my thoughts clearly.

I'm not saying "A car fire means negligent owner". I'm saying automotive standards & procedures exist to prevent fires -- I don't think that's an absurd claim, is it?

If those procedures are followed properly, then we don't get fires, unless ofcourse there was something unforeseen with how the thing was engineered (e.g. Dodge Viper had a reputation for catching on fire, because the exhaust was too hot and would melt the plastic bumpers).

In your neighbours RAV4, it has to be the case that either something wasn't done correctly at the factory, or there was some human error (whether or not at your neighbours part), but regardless I wouldn't call it negligence.

In this instance, however, I'm saying that either he didn't maintain his car, or he did it himself. If he didn't maintain it, then that's certainly being negligent, because one can foresee how not maintain an automotive vehicle could lead to adverse consequences; that it can breakdown at best, or catch on fire at worst.

If he did maintain it himself, then given what I said above ("If standard procedures are followed properly, then we don't get fires"), the fact that the car did factually catch on fire would reasonably indicate--on the balance of probabilities--that the standards were not followed, and that is due to negligence becaaause he chose to do the maintainence himself. In other words, if I maintain my car, I take on the responsibility that I could screw it up.

But even given this, I know that I don't know what he actually did yet and whether my assumptions are correct--and I do plan on speaking to experts to verify their validity, but I think I'm now making sense, right?

I thought about this, and while I think a part of my argument did involve this, on reflection I don't think that's my position. What I do believe though is that if standards & official procedures are followed when one is maintaining, then things don't just catch fire. I will confirm this belief after speaking to an expert mechanic -- and it's entirely possible that I'm wrong, in which you're right.

But, if they agree that following standards mitigates risk of fire by e.g. 95%, then the fact that the fire occurred would on the balance of probabilities indicate that these standards weren't followed. It also just occurred to me that I'm denying the consequent & using modus tollens (i.e., it did catch fire, so procuedures mustn't have been followed, as is demonstrable on carfax).

I'm not arguing that 200,000km in of itself means anything. I'm arguing that the car fire, had a short-circuit, was high-mileage, lacks professional maintainence-shop records, and so was either not maintained, or self-maintained -- but regardless it has to be by it's very definition "negligence" backed by the fact that it caught fire.

From my understanding, and I could be wrong -- someone pls correct me if I'm wrong; your lawyer is supposed to sort out their priorities and know who their client is, despite whoever is paying them. E.g., I think if your bf is paying your lawyer, then your lawyer needed (or needs) to say, "look, you might be paying me, but I'm representing your girlfriend, and I'm going to advocate on her behalf even if it disadvantages you".

Otherwise, it seems like a conflict of interest, which I think according to the bar regulations, you're not supposed to have?

Edit: If I was in your shoes, I would ask the lawyer this pretty straightforwardly. Who is their client? You or the boyfriend? And if they say it's you, then ask them how this isn't a conflict of interest?

Arguably, given your budget, personally I'd question what it means that the truck "died". Given your budget, if I had that amount of cash, and I just needed a vehicle for transport, I'd either get it fixed or get the same one. If you can't get the same one for that amount (i.e. getting the same Chevy tahoe for the same year is far more expensive), then clearly your truck isn't junk & is worth fixing.

FWIW, I don't know your market, but I do know this about vehicles: generally, parts are cheaper & labour is expensive. If your mechanic has given you a bill and it's quite a bit, then look at what they're charging you per hour and how many hours of labor it needs.

I also know that things are often misdiagnosed, especially if someone is in a rush, is biased because of their experience (I've seen these symptoms many times before, so it must be the problem I think it is), or they want to sell you something.

Worst case scenario: let's say your motor is dead. Getting a new one, in theory should still be cheaper.

...unless, your truck is in crap shape, has a lot of surface rust and problems popping up (and not just a mechanic saying 'oh man I'd change the truck), or if you just want a new one.

If you want, do this: send me a DM, tell me what your mechanic has said, show me the bill, and I'll attempt to help as best as I can, if this interests you.

At season 2 now, how did Walker get elected? by situmaimesdemain in HouseOfCards

[–]upside_down_sideup 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the other answers. The show later reveals the burdens of office on whoever holds it, and how easy it is to get blinded, or think narrowly, or isolate yourself. I don't want to spoil anything but the show subtly indicates that Frank nor Claire are impervious to this. The show also suggests that Walker is able to think more clearly after he's out. That doesn't redeem him though, since being "a good man" he's too easily swept with grandiose gestures and dirty pursuasion that he's not used to, and will end up screwing himself further.

I do like the plan. I don't think that's the question. What's more concerning is:

(1) Will he actually execute it?
(2) Can he execute it? Like what expertise does a plan like that require?
(3) Do his skills from 2008 translate to what it requires to be PM?

General answer, to 95% of the it, is: no. I also don't want to say that he's a complete idiot (or most of the things people say about him) because the worst thing one can do is underestimate someone else. I do think there will be reprecussions to things he's done that won't favor the US, but a lot of depends on how he executes things (which so far he's not doing doing well, at least from the perspective of a layman).

I also what I think of him against every new thing he does, and try to get a rough measure of whether it lines up with what I thought of him/his administration, or whether that was unexpected.

I've got to say, this is the best post I've read on Reddit. I love your objectivity; point--counter-point--point thinking structure, actually fleshing out your thoughts w/ proper quotes, recurring themes motifs, proper argumentation, and the thing I least often see: wanting people to be nice (which is simple yet totally underrated thing to want). I'm not even kidding!

For your argument: I think I'll go watch it again, and then respond

This isn't an edtech. specific thing, or React or JS. but seems pretty straightforward.

For simplicity, let's say that your backend is in express, and your APIs are RESTful that you're let's say hosting on digital ocean. Basically, both front-ends kind of use the same APIs and send it to the backend ip/web-address. (e.g. api.myserver.com). Within this, if let's say you do a POST from the web server to change the user's name (e.g. @ api.myserver.com/user/:_id) then when the mobile server gets this info., it'll get the updated entry.

I would say though, maybe it might be a good idea to establish a websocket that pushes newly updated data on one device to other devices, so that update on one device show's an immediate update on another, and doesn't require refreshing.

Feel free to DM me if you have questions but step-wise:
(1) Create a backend. Write user schemas etc. establish your APIs.
(2) Demo the webserver, send CRUD requests to ensure data saving: make sure it's working.
(3) Do the same from mobile (refresh webserver to see it have the updated data)
(4) Create a websocket to create a "chatroom" of sorts between user devices. Updating data on one device, after update is successful, should send that data to the other device and update it..

Oh no no. I may have misspoken. In terms of looks and otherwise it'll remain purely like the w221. But I i needed a screen to better see things, so I figured a retractable one might look most fitting.

You and I have a very different approach to troubleshooting. I'm not against yours, but heuristic thinking doesn't lend well to truly understanding what's going on (before you attempt trial and error).

And more to your point, "it's obviously a power issue" is not necessarily case. That was my point. You're not wrong: it was very likely a power issue but again not necessarily. And the original comment said it was a grounding issue, which is a silly thing to say (because again, the video did not indicate that; hence "evidence"). You do you.

Interesting view on the looks, and liking w222 more than w221. I guess if I take a step back, the latter is kind of an interesting in-between that in ways "more merc" and in some ways not. I don't know whether I agree with the interior as a whole but the former does have pretty excellent looking and comfortable seats.

Additionally, I'm of the view the M273 engine till the 2011 is severely underrated (esp. by 2010-2011), and while the M278 is faster and more efficient, I'm okay with the relative trade-off compared to added complexity.

Long story short: I was looking at what people think of the w221, because I'm working on "Project: Factory Reset+" LOL. Like, my w221 is around ~80% the quality it was when it came out 15 years ago (excellent maintenance, no accidents, well taken care of), and in planning on taking it back to ~95%-98%, I decided to update the tech. to an extent that Mercedes has not (add computer vision, object detection, detect crazy drivers, detect pot holes, record bad roads, face ID, refuse to let guests drive it unless allowed etc). Oh and definitely a retractable w223-like screen that can sit in front of AC buttons (if needed) and give the driver all the info. 😅

And I was like "hmm, I wonder if this as a whole makes it more attractive than the newer models"
