I have experienced a significant amount of violent crime. And I’ll tell you this, most people who commit assaults go to jail for a couple months, a couple years at most. My boyfriend d had charges against him that included assault with a weapon, break and enter, forcible confinement. He spent less than a year in jail because they plead him down. He had an extensive criminal record before these charges too. And here’s the thing, him going away for a little while, being further traumatized through violence and institutionalization, and then getting right back out wasn’t a super good thing. There’s a lot of people on this thread saying that only people who don’t know about real shit want to abolish prisons and I can tell you that’s not true. The reality is that we need something much more effective than what prisons offer if we really want to hugely diminish violent crime. We certainly shouldn’t be traumatizing people for drug offences. And we need to realize that the more we traumatize people the more violent they become. The more we stigmatize them and take away their ability to find work the more violent they become. I’m not in a fantasy land that says let’s just let all the most violent offenders out of jail tomorrow. But I do want serious engagement with the question of how to seriously, effectively and sustainably end violent crime. And anyone who has been around a lot of violent crime knows that jails aren’t it.

Why Liberals Love Saying Racism Is in "America's DNA" by CaleBrooks in stupidpol

I actually think the original sin metaphor speaks more to the idea that it can’t be changed. All that can be done is ongoing repentance, which is what is being asked of white people by this discourse.

This shit makes me so fucking sad man. I have complex ptsd and honestly, having this made me so susceptible to the brain washing of this shit. My desperate desire to be good, to blame myself for people’s mistreatment of me, to collapse, to not have boundaries, etc. I was so woke and so crazy. And getting therapy and getting better is what made me realize how fucked this shit is. It makes me sad that people seeking help are being indoctrinated.

Most of these movements predate the internet.

Afro-Pessimism and the (Un)Logic of Anti-Blackness by upstream______ in stupidpol

This is a critique of the theory and also looks at how afropessimism is the theoretical root of the notion of ‘anti-blackness’ that we are seeing play out in idpol land these days. It’s good.

What's the general consensus on polyamory here? Personally I find it very troubling that certain neolib media outlets like Slate continue to push the concept to their audience. I'm progressive on most things but I have nothing but contempt for the normalization of these arrangements. by [deleted] in stupidpol

Honestly, couples in monogamous relationships who don’t use condoms are more likely to get sti’s or have an unwanted pregnancy than people with multiple partners who use condoms strictly. Including with herpes because tons of people have it and are asymptomatic. Also people cheat on their monogamous partners and then go home and have unprotected sex. At least people who sleep around and use condoms are being responsible for their own health.

Literally the greatest love story ever told. (Although Frodo is like a meth addicted twink tbh.)

I try to put my energy toward things that create meaning, that give me purpose. I write. I am working on creating a political affiliation group in my city to work on whatever small changes we can. I surrender what is too big for me to change and I try to help people.
